Chapter 313: The Truth (I)

Chapter 313: The Truth (I)

ZINA

Zina had wanted to know about her parents so much that a point crept up on her when she no longer wanted to possess such knowledge. And there were many signs that led to that point.

The fact that she had been abandoned and yet, the WolfKnights were compensated heavily just to ensure that she remained alive.

When Freya Fergus stole her staff.

When she saw the vision of the man with a red mask and red hair when he was speaking with Freya.

And then when she saw the same man in her visions when she killed Daemon.

She had, of course, known instinctively that that man, whoever he was, would be her doom. She had known... just knew that she must do everything in her power to run away from him.

To make sure that the nemesis he would bring in her new, blissful life would never happen.

But now as she spoke with Daemo who suddenly seemed to possess a world of knowledge after just one night, Zina found herself worrying all over again that everything as she knew it would one day shatter before her eyes.

And maybe that one day was already on them. Because aside from the points she had just mulled over, there was one very important point that they had all tried to ignore.

And that point bordered on the Deformed Creature that had attacked Daemon during the afternoon blood moon. The same creature that had fled away so lightning fast when it had seen Zina.

That night, her heart was tugged and something moved even as she struggled in the pain of his violent attack. The scar was still on her back, faint of course after Daemon’s tending. After a few months, it might have faded completely. But for now, it always reminded Zina of a horrible fact.

The fact that the Deformed hadn’t fled because it was afraid of a five feet, seven inches woman like her. No, it had fled for something more. Something she and Daemon had never discussed about.

But now, they might as well have that conversation in an arena filled with thousands of people, and about all the most important people in the Arctic North.

"Daemon," she whispered, honestly startled at the profound fear that was laced to her voice.

He gripped her hands tighter just as the second combat ended with a tie. The crowd booed as the two combatants were disqualified since none of them were able to achieve total victory.

"Zina, do you trust me?" He said, still not concentrating on the match.

"I do." She responded, because that had become the honest truth.

"Then trust that I will take care of this."

Zina shook her head. "You said the execution of the Scremerd Pack was so well done no one would have escaped. Even my mother’s death was accounted for, so how is it that two people from the Pack somehow survived?"

"It is why I just interrogate this Sighter or whatever he calls himself. I will have a solution for this soon."

Zina shook her head again, "Daemon, something is coming for me."

"And it will never get to you..." he gritted, eyes spitting fire like he could have promised her the entire world then and there.

Zina chuckled in a bid to blink back her tears. "I do not think I am going for you. In fact, I think I am very bad news."

"No you’re not," Daemon repeated strongly, "you’re my mate and that is all that matters."

"How is it that you’re so calm?" Zina muttered honestly befuddled, "that deformed, he was the one who killed your mother..."

"Stop it." Daemon gritted with a finality that escaped Zina. "We know nothing for certain so do not speculate."

"I think I know enough, Daemon. Perhaps it was seeing my mother strung up like that in a dark, damp place where her will to live dried up, or perhaps it was her harsh words to me as I faced assassination, but I think I get it now. I am cursed... something is wrong with me. The reason I was left in a desolate bush in the first place was because I’ve always been something that should be abandoned."

Daemon stormed up to Zina’s bewilderment and he dragged her up with him. To the officials that sat at the Dias with them he said.

"You just forgive me ladies and gentlemen, but I’ve something far more pressing to attend to. Meanwhile, you can watch this spectacle on my behalf."

And then he was dragging her to the back door. Zina followed along, meanwhile she was already so lost in her head that all she could do was piece fragments of information that all hinted to that missing part of her life.

But more than that, she felt sorrow for her mother. The woman who must have been forced to go through hell just to produce a child like her.

Daemon slammed shut a door to some room at the back of the arena. The room was clean, decorated with red velvet curtains and rug.

"Zina..." he started again but she cut him off.

"You’re calling my name way too many times today, Daemon. But it seems to me that you perhaps know something that I don’t. Lay it to me plainly and don’t hold back. How did you know there was something more to my identity?"

Daemon glanced at her, looking unsure. Then finally he answered, "It was Alpha Kairos’ witch companion. That night she came, she said she saw something inside you."

Zina had thought the woman had been staring at her strangely, but she had brushed it off as a consequence of her strange looking eyes.

"Is that so? What did she see in me?" Zina asked in a strong voice as she braced herself for what Daemon might say to her.

She could be a deformed masquerading as a werewolf, or something worse. Nothing was off the charts anymore. That was what she told herself as she expected Daemon to lay on her the worst.
