Chapter 312: Her Half-Brother?
Chapter 312: Her Half-Brother?
ZINA
"Your mother sent me."
The words were spoken in Zina’s head. They certainly didn’t sound physical so her eyes widened naturally at that.
The Sighter released her hand almost immediately while she turned with panicked eyes to look at Daemon who was seated with his legs crossed while he sipped his wine. The only sign that the spectacle had gotten to him was the sight of his fingers gripping his wine glass to the point that Zina expected the thing to shatter then and there.
She slumped to her seat, mulling over the words and the strange way the man’s voice sounded in her head.
Your mother sent me.
Did her mother really send him? Zina had the answer before her. At least some of it. She was sure that the man was the boy in her vision... so could that mean they were siblings?
He was older... at least by ten years. That would put him in his early thirties. But she was confused at the same time. If the man was really her brother, then how come she was abandoned at some place?
Also, the way he had said ’your mother’ didn’t seem as though he was drawing a clear line to show that they were just half siblings. It felt like he was hinting at something else entirely... like maybe they had no blood connection at the very least.
Zina groaned as a bad headache tried to overcome her. She was already damn tired of questions upon questions with no answer. And now that she felt like she was quickly edging to the point where she would have the answers she had been hoping for, she was unusually scared.
It felt like something bad was about to happen... and real soon at that.
She turned to Daemon and spoke in the calmest voice she could afford, "Do you know it’s him?" She asked, sure that he knew what she was referring to.
"Naturally." He simply responded while he refilled his wine glass. That gesture struck a cord—Daemon seemed to be gearing himself for a much entertaining action later that day.
An action that had nothing to do with the tournament.
"Then why are you allowing him to contest?" Zina asked, genuinely confused. Most times, it was hard to track down Daemon’s thought processes... and it had never been as hard as it currently was.
"I was curious," Daemon spoke, turning to look at her. His eyes roamed down to her hand, just at the spot where the Sighter had kissed. "I was curious to know who would be so audacious to go after me and you. And now, I am merely sating my curiosity."
"What if he becomes Beta and not Yaren?" Zina asked because she honestly didn’t get it.
"What would be the use if he later ends up dead? Whether he becomes Beta or Alpha hardly matters to me, Zina."
Zina blinked. Even though Daemon appeared at ease, it was clear that he was going out for blood. " Daemon, I think he is my half-brother," Zina said panickedly. The thought that her one family whom she never got the chance to know would die so easily before she got to know him was terrifying... and it dredged up her bleary past in ways she would rather not have.
"He might be from the Screamers Pack, Zina. But he is not your brother."
That former revelation had her seating upright. "So he is from the screamer’s pack?" She gasped in a low voice, careful that no one would hear what they were speaking of.
"If that is the case," Zina pressed further as the dream she had came back to her, "then I truly believe he is my brother. I’ve seen him...."
"Zina," Daemon cut her softly, his eyes holding great worry that made her confused and scared her at the same time, "His real name is Zelkov Screamers—he is the illegitimate son of the former Alpha of the Screamers Pack." He explained slowly.
Why was he suddenly talking to her carefully as one would a child? The second combat had started, but they were hardly paying any attention.
Zina brushed off the strange feeling she was getting as she said, "Then why are you not convinced we are siblings? I truly saw him...."
"Zina," he cut her off again, this time, he looked uncomfortable. "Just because he is the son of the Alpha doesn’t make him your half-brother."
Zina blinked once, then twice as the meaning of the words sank with her. She had always suspected it in view of the fact that the time frame of her birth and the execution of the Screamers Pack didn’t make sense... but she had decided to ignore it. Because somehow, she prayed that at the very least, her brother should have been relatively normal.
For even though she knew nothing of her parents, she had prayed that at the very least she had parents somewhere... whether they were dead or alive.
"Zina," Daemon called her again.
"Stop calling my name like that," Zina said, twisting her fingers as she blinked back tears. She stared straight at the mangle of bodies fighting at the stage and ignored the hollers of the crowd.
"You know it as I do that your mother is truly the Luna of the Screamers Pack. But the identity of your father is an entirely different issue," Daemon pressed forward nonetheless. Of course, unlike her, he was far from being a coward.
He gripped her hands from under the table. "Look at me," he said.
Zina did as she was told. Those stormy black eyes of his that usually held all the secrets of the world now seemed to be stripping her for all she was worth.
"Your mother gave birth to you at least five years after the execution of the Screamers Pack. I’ve reason to believe that she was abducted somewhere, you’ve also confirmed the same right? From the time you saw your mother in your vision?"
Zina nodded grimly, preparing herself for what was coming... the truth that she had tried to deny, but was now creeping up on her.
