Chapter 301: The Boy Who Was Never Loved

Chapter 301: The Boy Who Was Never Loved

MOON

Yaren NorthSteed lived the first decade of his life as a bastard whose mother was a healer that seduced the Alpha King.

The second decade of his life was lived as the boy whose ray of hope was sewn into his saviour and half-brother—Daemon NorthSteed.

And now at the third decade of his life, he couldn’t help but fight to live as the man who would fight for his rightful place in a world that scorned him from his birth.

Yaren the Bastard.

Yaren the Dog.

Yaren the Bottomfeeder.

Yaren the unloved child.

He had heard all of them. At the beginning, there was so much rage that he reacted by fighting his way through the insults and pain.

That hard hardly worked out for his good, and not because he wasn’t sting but because it was himself against the world.

He was just seven after one such bloody fight when he met Daemon NorthSteed.

No, that was hardly his first time seeing that brother of his. All of Yaren’s pathetic life, he had always known his brother called Daemon as the child of the late Luna Queen who had all the servants in the castle at his beck and call.

Not only that, his brother who was called Daemon was also whispered to be the nephew of the dreaded Alpha of the DireWolf Pack.

Yaren had envied him. Yaren had hated him. Yaren had been jealous of him.

For in his, all that Daemon had he lacked. While all servants were at the beck and call of his half-brother and legitimate son of his father, Yaren’s room in the castle was one step away from ruins and he was the one who had to serve himself.

For while everyone seemed to fear his half-brother Daemon naturally while giving him a wide breadth, no one had any reservations at coming after Yaren and his life.

Daemon was that shinning stare surrounded by other stars that were far from being as shiny as he was, whereas Yaren was a crude stone traversing the galaxy without a home.

That was until that fateful day when he met his half-brother up close at that garden. Just nine years old himself, Daemon had his nose buried in a book, his legs dangling in the air as he sat on a high garden bench.

His attention never broke from the book, and yet Yaren could sense that he must have noticed he was no longer alone.

Yaren, bloody and beaten up suddenly felt his rage coming up allover again. The mere fact that he was yet agains being ignored felt demeaning to him, and his fragile seven year old ego was hurt.

So he picked a stone, and hurled it at Daemon. And the other boy, without taking his eyes off his book simply caught the stone with his left hand like he was squashing an annoying fly... and that was it.

He didn’t look up, nor did he address him. He just kept on reading.

Of all the humiliation that Yaren had faced in his life, that had to be worse. For Daemon not only ignored him, but he wouldn’t even hit him as their other brothers would do to Yaren.

"Coward!!!!" Yaren found himself screaming that day, unable to take the heat of that humiliation. He was someone who hated to talk, but thanks to Daemon’s attitude, he found himself spitting a lot of words filled with hate at Daemon, but they hardly unfazed the boy who was still reading his book.

And Daemon never spared him his attention until he flipped to the last page of the book.

It was already night by then, and Yaren was out of breath while Daemon looked pissed. He jumped off the bench, approaching Yaren as one would do a disgusting insect.

Yaren waited for it, meanwhile preparing the blow he would land on his half-brothers face. That night, he was overcome with hate enough to move the world. And more than his hate, he wanted the Alpha King—the father who never loved him—to watch as his beloved legitimate son was crushed under Yaren’s fist.

"If you’re going to disturb my private time, can you at least not reek of blood." Dameon said on reaching him, "Blocking out the noise of all the nonsense you were spewing is easy, but blocking off the reek of blood coming off you is an entirely different matter. And if you think that marring my face would move our father, then you might be stupider than Eldric alleges you’re."

Yaren was shocked, and that night began the tumultuous albeit rocky relationship between two siblings that were never loved.

Except one sibling chased for that love for a long time, while the other never for once asked to be loved.

Yaren was of course the former, while Daemon fit in comfortably into the latter. And maybe that was why until today, Yaren never understood why he chased for such love more than his brother that was actually deserving of it.

And that night, as he ran through the Labyrinth, the past crept up on him like the shadow of a monster. Sometimes, he felt as though he was back to being that foolish seven year old boy, and the past was far more vivid than he would have liked it to be.

The labyrinth was spelled. That much was obvious to him. But he never stopped running... maze after maze, turn after turn. With the receding crescent moon as his hunt guide, he ruthlessly marked the places he had travelled to, while concentrating on the remaining hundreds of maze he still had to go through.

This test certainly was not the ultimate test. It was going to be the third test at the room of whispers, and he felt that he needed to get to the room as fast as he could afford.

Unbeknownst to him, he had never thought to think that maybe there was no hidden trick in the second test and that perhaps, the Tiger Wolf and the Masqueraders had joined hands together to combine their powers.

He was just realizing it then, and he knew for sure that whatever was making his past seem so vivid must be coming out from the room of whispers.

One hour had gone, and he was yet to locate the room.

The more he stayed inside the labyrinth, the more the spell that was seeping out of the room of whispers would take over him until he would no longer have control of his thoughts or his legs.

Yaren halted mid-run, panting as he looked up at the crescent moon. His wolf’s senses was stretched and he easily scanned his surroundings. But it seemed his hunt instinct might not help much for the test. No, he had to do the extra.

’We will try reverse tracking,’ Yaren communicated to his wolf.

’That is dangerous, not like you would listen to whatever I say so okay.’

’But I need your help,’ Yaren continued, ignoring the snark in his wolf’s tone, ’I plan to give in to the spell here so I can track the source, in return, you have to keep the balance and make sure I don’t get too lost.’

There was a moment of silence before his wolf sighed, ’Fine, however you have to find that took fast. I can only help for at least thirty minutes, the rest of it would be up to you.’

That was more than enough time for him. Without hesitating further, Yaren slipped away from the tight control he had kept over his mind allowing the spell to seep in.

Flashes of the past became even more intense as he broke into a run while trying not to let the new madness taking over his mind to engulf him.

He ran for a time that could have been infinity but in reality might have just been mere seconds. He ran until he was out of breath and out of his mind... he ran, until he felt his legs carry him to a room.

And then a voice spoke to him... the unmistakable voice of his father.

"You know, I never understood why you loved him so much. Daemon I mean,"

It was startling enough that Yaren drew to a slight stop, but not startling enough for him to stop running. But run as he might, he only came upon a wall. And it was as though he was running without his sight... there was so much darkness around him.

"Does he even love you as much as you do. I mean, you love him more than you ever did your seductress mother who died birthing you. But does he love you more than he loves his mother whom he destroyed her belly to crawl out from? Or does he love you more than the woman who once framed him?"

Yaren realized it only then that he had made it to the room of whispers—the third test. And this one might prove to be a feat that he might never win.
