Chapter 299: To The Room Of Whispers

MOON

"Welcome to the Labyrinth, where souls will be lost forever."

The announcement, made in a billowing voice was enough to send an instant chill in the air that successfully shut every chatter and motion that had been going on up until that moment.

Yaren squared observed the announcer, he seemed to be a man of high rank. At least, as far as high rank could be afforded within the Tiger Wolf ranks.

Caspian Vampage who had refused to leave Yaren’s side despite the fact that Yaren had all but pulled down his fake mask and revealed the terrifying man behind it grinned, maintaining his pristine smile.

"Is he not being a bit dramatic? First it was a game of the mind, and now will it a be game of the Souls?"

Yaren, of course, did not deem that statement with any response. Instead, he stared intently at the dark area that encompassed the so-called labyrinth as if staring at it would reveal whatever dangers lurked behind there.

"This stage is quite simple," the Tiger Wolf continued, his eyes holding a hue that was in contradiction to his bold words. A hue that said he was far from saying the truth.

"Now this Labyrinth, carefully navigated, will lead you to the Room of Whispers where the Masqueraders will be presiding over the last test.

There is only one entrance to the Room of Whispers there out of the hundreds of mazes in this entrance. Each participant will pick a designated entrance through a raffle draw, and you have three hours to find your way to the Room of Whispers for the last test."

Yaren, against his wishes found himself squinting at that. The time frame only made him suspicious. If the test was truly one of a seeking out the best Hunter and Tracker as the announcer made it seem, then it was safe to say that most of them would pass the test seeing as they were a species of naturally endowed hunters.

Hunting down an exit out of hundred of mazes wasn’t going to be easy, but it wasn’t exactly hard either.

There had to be a catch, but seeing as the announcer wasn’t saying more, it would seem they would find out the catch by themselves when they got into the maze.

Yaren hated surprises of any kind, but this was not something he could exactly do anything about.

To prove himself that he was the only one standing by his brothers side, he would grit through every challenge that was thrown to him and make sure he reached the end.

"I wonder what the catch is," Caspian Vampage muttered from his side. Yaren turned to look at the man only to spit him with a grin as if the thrill of the unknown only made the tests even more fun for him.

Despite knowing who Caspian Vampage was from his time with Daemon at the GreenLands, Yaren had pretended not to know him. He wondered if the other man felt disgruntled at the knowledge of the fact that Yaren knew the tidbits about his time in the Vampage Pack, and yet had pretended to buy his pretend easy nature filled with smiles and whatnot.

Truly, on Yaren’s part, pretending not to know had been the best thing he could do. Not when Daemon had personally investigated the Vampage Pack in relation to the Theta now his mate.

Daemon dug every single knowledge out. From the fact that Jacen Vampage had rejected Theta Zina WolfKnight, to the fact that the so-called man was the wussy Alpha Heir of the Vampage Pack.

Coincidentally of course, they had also found out that Caspian Vampage was his half-brother and his father’s bastard son. A boy who was capable unlike Jacen, and yet only ended up with all the scorn the Vampage Pack could spare him.

Yaren had almost related with his sordid story, so seeing Caspian pretend to be a grinning fool while hiding the true darkness and ability inside him almost amused him.

Yaren didn’t understand why he felt the need to go to such lengths. And just to make things clear, he said, "I will become the Beta of the NorthSteed Pack."

Caspian didn’t show any shock towards his sudden declaration. "Naturally...." He simply answered, still maintaining his smile.

So he wasn’t going to give up his pretense? At least it didn’t look like he was planning on giving up anytime soon.

"What I mean is that should I face you in combat, I will show no mercy. You can be any other thing, but I am the only one who will be the Alpha King’s Beta."

It wasn’t like Yaren to say such words, and perhaps Caspian knew the same for her was confused for a moment. But then, the confusion cleared from his face together with his smile, and his features darkened as his true self reared up once again.

"You should be capable enough before you can say such capable sounding words." He said darkly, his eyes hooded.

"I know people like you, and I am aware of the true extents of your ambition," Yaren said in response while his eyes was trained on the man that was sharing the raffle draw sticks. "It is why I must warn you in good faith. I don’t know how to play fair, or foul, but I know how to play to kill."

Caspian chuckled, his whole body shaking as if he was unable to quite contain his laughter. "Are you saying you will completely destroy me should I face you?"

Yaren didn’t bother to respond anymore. He believed his message had been passed well enough for Caspian to understand that he meant business from there on.

He acknowleged the man’s capability alright, but as far as he was concerned, he was far from being a match for him.

It would be in his best interest to fight for the lesser positions. Struggling to fight him for the position of Beta would only make Yaren to fight even more until he didn’t know when to stop.

Yaren picked up his own stick when it got to his turn. The number in the stick read ’eighteen’ which meant he would be entering the labyrinth from the eighteenth entrance.

A cursory glance at the remainder of them showed they were less than three hundred. The first test had thinned at least four hundred of them which was quite impressive to say but the least.

Yaren stood at the entrance of his maze as he waited for the signal for the second test to begin, and once the signal sounded, he dashed into the darkness that was his Labyrinth.
