Chapter 294: The Man Behind Her Obsession

MOON

Fionna shook her head internally amidst immediately. Her heart had no business to be moved by this outrageous spectacle. This was the test; they were trying to make her lost in her obsession. She thought herself immune, but the Night Mages were proving her wrong by watering the seeds she once thought was dead in her heart.

"Say the truth," the eerie voice behind her whispered!forvefully, "you wish for this happiness. You, the child who grew up without parents, sold in the place of another while you were just seven, and turned into a monster when you were just ten... I know you wish for this."

The green-eyed Night was still sitting before her, so she was honestly befuddled as to who it was that whispered behind her. But the person... or the thing as the case may be felt almsot skeletal to her touch.

Like an otherworldly being that should never be seen or touched.

The Night Mage’s eyes though, were no longer green. They were shrouded in whips of darkness that seemed to emit smoke around him. And seeing that he was not moving from the chair, nor was he smirking anymore, Fionna figured he was the one that was controlling the thing behind.

She tried to take calming deep breath while reminding herself that she had better mental fortitude than to be seduced by the promise of a happiness that would never become her reality. All she needed to do was to shatter this reflection and escape the hold of the man that was gripping her from behind.

If the test were as the Night Mages made it out to be, then the mirror must be reflecting her most innermost and hidden desires. Watering seeds that she had once thought to be dead.

"Do you think I will be seduced by a man cowardly enough not to show his face to me," Fionna said weakly, feeling out of breath.

"I shall not be seduced by a lie." She continued, as though the willfulness in her voice would shatter the reflection in the mirrors.

"If that is truly the case, my dear," the voice whispered again, skeletal fingers gripping her arms harder and holding her in place, "then I wouldn’t have been summoned here, nor will those reflection still remain. So confront yourself and be sincere to your desires for once... of all things, why is it this that you hold onto? Why are you so obsessed with it?"

They were a hundred different reasons, but Fionna wasn’t exactly in the mood to answer them. Instead, she searched for the weakest point in her obsession, hoping to shatter the reflection.

And when she found it, she latched onto it as she chanted repeatedly with all the conviction the universe wasn’t ordinarily able to offer her, "he is a masked man. His identity unknown, what happiness could I ever possibly have with a man that doesn’t exist?"

On and on she chanted it, ignoring the willful whispers in her ears. The fact that the man who passed himself on as Kaliga The Merchant was a mystery actually helped her to break away from her obsession, and long last, she started to feel a semblance of control return to her.

She kept on to it, knowing that more than fifteen minutes had passed and she needed to shatter the reflection as soon as she could afford. But suddenly, the Night Mage’s still figure cloaked in wisps of dark smoke grinned darkly.

"Shall we increase the stakes, Fionna?" He said, and the crooked voice of the figure behind her repeated the same. Their words seem to echo against each other, like the coming together of two lashes of thunder.

Her eyes that were beginning to droop and shut away from the reflection snapped open.

"Shall we unveil the identity of the man? Maybe then, you shall see reasons to remain in this happiness forever?" They said together again at the same time.

Fionna didn’t stop chanting the words, although they came out even weaker as the room seemed to swirl before her. She paid no heed to their words because she was confident that the only thing that could be used against her in the reflection were things she already knew, seem, or had already experienced. So they couldn’t possibly unveil the mask when she didn’t know who the man was himself.

But she couldn’t have been more wrong.

What happened next was like watching an horror opera. Not the kind that was performed in blood and gore, but the kind that told haunting stories that were chilling behind horrific sights itself.

The curtains were drawed, and the stage was set. The cloth mask of the man in the reflection who hugged her smiling and beaming figure from behind loosened and fell off. And the face that was revealed took away the strength in her legs, and she fell to the ground while staring at the mirror in horror.

What was Marcus DireWolf during there in her visions? Why was his face there?

The figure behind her seemed to lean down.

"You didn’t know?" He whispered with a cackle, "now that you know, end your pain, and become one with your happiness. I shall grant you the gift of this wholesome image of happiness, and you can live with him forever in all the ways you want... in your head, of course."

Fionna’s heart clenched like a fist was gripping it. She felt woozy and out of breath. The hour glass taunted her. Twenty minutes had passed, and the remaining trickle of sand seemed to beg her to come to her sense.

"Marcus does not have brown eyes," she muttered, trying to break away from the lie that was being told to her.

But the figure behind her was yet to deliver the killing stake as it whispered maliciously, "Ten years ago, Marcus DireWolf was a level three shifter, and now, he is a Lycan Shifter."

Those were the only words that needed to be said, for it was a well known fact that once one attained a level two shifter status, the color of their eyes would change.

And it was especially true for the DireWolf Pack that possessed brown eyes courtesy of their desert lands.
