Chapter 293: Her Happiness In A Mirror
MOON
"Who said your test hasn’t started?"
The words were both a taunt and a well delivered threat. Despite possessing well polished features, Fionna had become sure that this man was someone who got off from seeing other people fail, and his next words only confirmed that.
"Unlike the other doors, the test in this door is not hard. If anything, you actually only need five minutes to pass the test if you’re truly capable. The remaining twenty-five minutes are simply for time wasting."
Fionna scoffed. "Is not hard? And yet I am quite confident that this door is the only one who hasn’t yet produced a single qualifier."
The man grinned, vibrant green eyes swirling with malice. "Do you dare to accuse me of your incaoabilities? All I’ve done is quite simple—show you your happiest moment, and then watch and see if it’s something you can escape from... let go."
Fionna smirked. "Then it’s a hood thing that I’ve not even one single happy moment. Go ahead and test me out, your presence have began to bore me."
The man’s only response was a wicked grin as he lifted something up with his fingers. Fionna, who had taken to instead stare at the hour glass slowly lifted her eyes from the instrument to look at what was in his fingers, and on recognizing it, her breath hitched in her throat while her entire body froze.
Swinging inbetween his fingers was a dainty necklace that was unmistakably her onyx necklace which Marcus DireWolf had destroyed. But now, the exact replica of the roughly cut onyx attacked to the same necklace she bought years ago was dangling between her and the Night Mage.
"How....?" She managed to mutter, feeling as though she was being thrusted into a trance. They were invisible hands that attempted to tug at her, trying to drown her as the dangling necklace became the front and center of her visions.
"You seem to be mistaken about something, Fionna WolfKnight," the Night Mage drawled hypnotically, "happiness comes in many forms. For some, it’s the longing of a past regret. For others, it is the dream of an impossible future."
Fionna could not move a single part of her body. Her limbs were jelly, and it felt like she was floating on air, gravity the only thing that kept her from crashing.
"How...?" She muttered again. If this was a spell, then it was one that was strong enough to burrow into her thoughts. But what sort of sorcery was so strong as to find out about the one thing she had never told anyone about.
As to how much the necklace meant to her, Fionna had even been hesitant to whisper it to herself when she laid alone, sleeping at night.
As to how much the mystery man who called himself Kaliga the Merchant meant to her, Fionna had been hesitant to confront it herself.
"How you ask," the Night Mage drawled, voice filled with maliciousness, "you were so intent on staring at me that you forgot to look into the mirror and see what it reflects."
Instinctively, her head snapped to the side, and the reflection there became her final breaking point.
Instead of the reflection of her, standing before the man in that dainty, dimly lit room. The reflection in the mirror was instead one of her from her failed mission ten years ago while she was clad in dainty silk.
The reflection clearly depicted the events that happened on the last day she met with the man that posed himself as Kaliga and how he had kicked her ass. There she was, sprawled on the floor while left with the onyx stone that fell from the masked man’s body as evidence of what had happened.
Back then, it hadn’t been love nor hate. No, the only reason she had held onto that onyx necklace was because even though she was hesitant to admit it, she had become obsessed.
Obsessed with the man she didn’t know of his identity, obsessed with his peculiar brown eyes that she would have recognized anywhere, and obsessed with the careless words that he had thrown to her—
—it’s either you’re strong, or you’re gone.
Those words were the reason behind her motivation as she crawled back to the Red Sisters with the shame of a failed mission. It was those words and the man behind them that caused her to work her hardest and climb to the rank of a Red Hand.
And the days when her strength waned, the days when she was weary and unable to breathe properly, the days when she was unable to move on again... she would stare at the onyx stone and be reminded of her source of strength.
Indeed, it was her obsession. But could obsession turn to happiness? Perhaps without her knowledge, her obsession had become a source of her happiness?
"Look carefully," a voice whispered so close to her ears, leaving putrid breath that stank. Sinewy fingers she could not see gripped her arms from the back,
"In a better world, this man could have been your saviour. Saving you not just from your suicidal thoughts but also saving you in every way that you never were saved."
With the whisper of darkness that held her captive, the reflection in the mirror began to morph into something else entirely. This time around, it was a reflection of her dressed as a commoner while living in a beat down house.
Her face was contorted into the brightest and widest smile that was even foreign to her, and she was chirping away happily. Shortly after, the masked man appeared behind her and hugged her from the back. It was as though her reflection and the man were living as a couple.
"This is what you could have had...." The voice behind her whispered while Fionna stood paralyzed, unable to move an inch away from the same spot.
With wide eyes, she could only stare at the reflection... and strange enough, her heart was moved in ways she never expected it to, and her true desires were laid bare before her.
