Chapter 277: The Thing Inside Her
Chapter 277: The Thing Inside Her
ZINA
Zina well recognized the Elite Epsilons from back at the castle, but Brestom IceSavage’s presence was one that she found both funny as it was deceitful.
The man had the guts to be leading the Epsilons while screaming the words ’protect the Theta.’ from atop his horse.
What he was doing couldn’t have been more evident to her... a dying pawn looking to make a comeback by taking credit for the Queen’s Gambit.
At least, their dire situation was quickly put under control as the Epsilons tipped the scales to their favour. From the corner of her eyes, Zina watched as Raven darted off to make a quick escape, and the masked man followed immediately after.
Zina took off after him, drawn to more than just the mystery of his presence. There was something about him that captivated her and aroused her curiosity. Add that with the fact that she felt that if she didn’t go after him, then he wouldn’t come after her despite rendering such a huge favour of protecting her life.
That part of the borders was filled with unnatural rocks coated with deep layers of fallen snow. Zina had heard that just like the forest of mountains where the first stage of the tournament had been held, the place was called the forest of rocks.
Rivers were underneath it, but layers and layers of snow that fell all year round in that area made it impossible for the rivers to fully melt and show their beauty.
Zina chased after their figures carefully, not wanting to slip. Layers of snow covering the river meant that there was enough friction for her to not be careful of every single step that she purported to make, but she knew she still had to show great care nonetheless lest she ended up shattering the ice layers and drowning in the river.
’Like your weight would be enough to shatter the ice hardened ground, huh?’
Her wolf’s sarcasm-laced words snickered at her, giving her a stop. After Daemon had claimed her, Zina had been forced for very good reasons to shut out her wolf’s voice entirely. Her fear over their precarious situation when faced with the army of killers had caused her to lose the control Daemon had taught her to have over her wolf, and now, she was once again exposed to the feral creature’s cold, snarky words.
"You’re the reason why I am like this!" Zina growled out loud as she almost slipped but managed to gain her footing by clutching onto a tall, large rock.
She was still wearing her fur cloak, but the weather suddenly seemed to be freezing cold.
’Believe me, I am not the reason why you’re like this.’ Her wolf hissed with a voice tinged with disbelief, ’We were fine, until they decided to change us.’
Zina froze; never in her life had she thought to have a serious conversation with her wolf. It especially didn’t help that the feral thing was snarky as hell combined with the fact that they were ordinary shifters, so Zina had easily dismissed her to be a wolf of no great importance.
"How did they change us? And who are they?" Zina asked slowly, realizing that she had lost track of the masked man. At the same time, she searched the ground for their footprints while she waited with bated breath for her wolf’s answer.
’Believe me when I say you should know the answer better than I do. But haven’t you figured out that much? From your powerful heat, to your powerful sight, to being an Alpha King’s mate. Surely, you do not think the heavens were being unusually kind to some worthless, weak wolf by granting you all that.’
Zina spotted footprints and followed it steadily. "I know the heavens aren’t that kind," she muttered under her breath, "but what have they done to us? Could this thing be the reason why I died and resurrected?"
’Again, you would know the answers better than I do. Although I would advise you to figure it out fast because half the time, I struggle with this thing they put inside you. It is driving me insane as it is.’
Zina froze on her steps again. Even though she knew she didn’t need to speak out loud, she was compelled to do so as if that would give her the answers she wanted any faster than she needed them to come to her.
"What do you mean what they put inside me?"
’You don’t feel it? Took me by surprise. Half the time I am freezing inside you from the crazy cold it emits, and yet you do not feel a thing. I must commend your unfeelingness. Seems I am the only one destined to suffer for you.’
Zina was about to ask the one thousand and one questions that swirled in her mind at that moment, when movement by her side gave her a start.
She turned to the direction of it, "who is there?" She asked in a hardened, hardly in the mood to play cat and mouse game with anyone. Especially not when she had just gotten information to the summary that she wasn’t as normal as any remotely normal person would be.
The masked figure came out, his knife dripping with blood onto the pristine snow flakes that coated the ground. Seeing how terrifyingly quick and nimble he was, Zina should have run, but she stood her ground instead.
"Is she dead?" She asked, knowing that the man was fully aware of what she was asking about. From where she stood, his eyes were barely perceptible, and yet it was acutely familiar.
From where though? Her brain still wasn’t catching up with her mind.
The man shook his head slowly into a ’no’.
"So she managed to escape then." Zina observed, "I must thank you though for your kindness sir and the protection you’ve shown me."
The man didn’t say anything, but his body was fraught with tension. Almost as if he was contemplating saying words that he was unsure of just yet.
When he wouldn’t say anything, Zina walked slowly towards him, "If you do not mind, may I ask who you are?" She asked carefully while halting in her steps when she noticed that the man backed away with every step she took.
Although on his side it seemed he was backing out for an entirely different reason and certainly not out of fear for her.
A few seconds passed before the man grunted in a rough voice that was certainly not familiar.
"You must run away from here, Zina. Leave everything behind, and I will guide you out of the darkness."
