Chapter 245: Does He Know What Love Is?
ZINA
Remembering that her last conversation with Sybril on the topic of enhancing her power to see visions had been far from smooth, Zina intended to avoid the woman when she reached the Temple. But she should have guessed it would only be a fool’s sojourn for after all, the Seer the North Heralder sent back was in the elderly woman’s custody.
"Did you truly believe you could have avoided me?" Sybril asked in a voice that held no steel as they stood in the Opaque Shrine of the Temple while gazing out the window that overlooked a lake that was frozen over.
Zina had been informed by the Temple Priestess that the Seer she was looking for was waiting for her at the shrine, but in arriving there, the only figure waiting for her was that of Sybril whom she had been proactively avoiding.
Zina shrugged, "I thought I could have at least tried."
Sybril seemed to observe her through hooded eyes as if she was searching for the right words to say what she wanted to say.
"You’ve changed, Theta." She finally said, startling Zina instead.
"What?" Zina said dumbly for she had truly expected another lecture from Sybril on all the reasons why she was being so reckless.
The elderly woman shook her head. "I was wrong in trying to stop you from learning sorcery yourself when your gifts are just one form of it." She said, her words freezing Zina. "But when you watch that kind of power destroy people close to you, you’ve no choice but to show a certain kind of reluctance towards it."
Zina approached the woman thoughtfully, gripping her veiny hands in hers. "Apparently, I didn’t think much of how sore of a topic it would be to you either. I am sorry too, I almost forgot your aversion towards the Night Mages.
Sybr chuckled, "Aversion is one way to say it, hate is another way to say it too I guess."
Zina stilled, it felt as though there was more to what Sybril was trying to express. "Is there something I should know?"
"It’s true that I hate... no, that I absolutely despise the Night Mages. But for what reason could it be?" Sybril mused in a voice filled with hate.
Zina seemed to hold her breath, "For what reason?" She asked in a low voice filled with dread. Sybril seemed to hear her question anyway, not like it really mattered because the woman seemed to answering either ways.
"The Night Mages killed my daughter. No, they didn’t just kill her, they destroyed her. And when I came to collect her body, the only words they could profer to me was saying that ’sorcery killed her’."
Zina fought hard to keep her jaw close but that was hard. Finally, she muttered in disbelief. "You had a daughter?"
Sybril smiled distantly. "Yes, once upon a time."
Zina suddenly didn’t feel like she knew the woman before her, but then, come to think of it, she didn’t know anything about Sybril beyond their encounter six years ago and the fact that she worked for the late Theta Amelia. And while she had expected that the woman would have surely lived a wholesome life before their meeting, she never expected it would be a life wholesome enough that it would include a child.
No wonder she seemed to show intense hate for the five great evil. If an organization had taken her daughter’s life, Zina would more than hate them too... she would destroy them. In her opinion, Sybril was definitely being too kind about it.
As if to make the fact that Zina knew nothing of her more glaring, Sybril added without warning. "It was once upon a time when I myself was a part of the Night Mages."
This time, Zina didn’t fight to keep the shock off her face. She allowed it show shamelessly as she gasped at the woman.
It took some minutes, but once Zina finally found her ability to speak, she said. "Why are you suddenly telling me all this? What prompts you to reveal such secrets you’ve held for a long time?"
Sybril chuckled. "Because you’ve changed, and I don’t know why, but I think I love the new glint in your eyes."
Zina blushed uncomfortably. "New glint... in my eyes?"
Sybril nodded. "Power that doesn’t come down like a blade, but delivers justice like one. Determination that sides with the weak and oppresses the strong. I now understand what Theta Amelia meant when she said you’re to stand by greatnesses side."
Zina found herself smiling sadly. "Sometimes I feel lost. Sometimes I don’t know what to do... to help him. He is far more brilliant, more intelligent, far more cunning... sometimes, I don’t think he needs me. He’s way too larger than life and I am ashamed to admit that he intimidates me atimes."
Sybril’s eyes roamed to her shoulders, resting just the place where Daemon’s claiming mark was covered by her cloth. "And yet, you’re already doing so well."
Zina blushed impossibly more of possible. She cleared her throat as memories of Daemon saying he loved her came to her mind. And like all things Daemon, not only was the confession unexpected, but the reason behind it was quite as ridiculous as him saying it.
He loved her lips? Her eyes? And the way she could take care of herself without the necessary presence of him? Zina hadn’t want to say it outloud back them and spoil their moment, but she hardly believed that Daemon understood what it meant to love someone.
In fact, she was convinced the man didn’t understand the concept of love beyond it being used in the family sense. Sure, he loved her as he would a sister, but as a lover, that was an entirely different thing.
Suddenly wanting to voice her depressing thoughts, she said. "He said he loves me. I do not believe he understands what that means though."
Sybril’s eyes seemed to shine with mischief as she looked out the window, "Do you truly think so."
Zina had no response to that. Looking around the opaque shrine she tried to change the topic by asking instead, "where is the seer from the East?"
On cue, a side door opened and a woman far too old than Zina anticipated appeared, walking towards them slowly without any support.
On reaching Zina who took the woman in with wide surprised eyes, the woman bowed lowly, eyes on the floor.
But while Zina might not recognize the woman, she certainly recignized the voice that hissed, "I now greettttt you, Thetta Zzzina WolfKnighttt, Thetta of the NorthSsteed Pack and all of the Arctic North."
