Chapter 241: Permanent Things

ZINA

’I love you, Zina WolfKnight.’

Zina didn’t understand what she was hearing at first. Perhaps it was because she was in Daemon’s head, but the words sounded imaginary... distant even.

But they were repeated again and she knew they were true... his words to her were real.

Her eyes flew open and she backed away while a gasp escaped her lips. They were both still naked, but she guessed she must have embraced the primal part of herself for she was hardly faded by the nudity.

"Why?" She asked pathetically, immediately groaning internally as the words left her lips. Of all the things she could say, it was to question why Daemon loved her?

Daemon smiled, then he tugged her to his body until they both fell freely on Zina’s bed. It occurred to her that not only had her door been torn apart by Daemon, but her windows were now a shattered mess courtesy of her scream.

They were exposed as far as being exposed counted for, but since Daemon appeared to be unfazed by that pesky fact, Zina pretended that it was okay.

She didn’t know why that ability of hers didn’t hesitate to rear its ugly head over and over again, but she knew she needed to have it under control as soon as she could. And for starters, she needed to learn how to not scream.

Admittedly, learning that would be hard if Daemon always played her body the way he played it that night... not like she was complaining.

Zina felt him cover their bodies with the duvet, and she buried her face in his chest, inhaling the calming and powerful scent he seemed to easily embody.

That morning, she had woken up by his side, and that night, it would seem as though she would be sleeping by his side yet again. Had she not experienced the true definition of a long day?

"So you were asking something?" Daemon said as his fingers stroked the nape of her neck, just where the mark evidencing his claim on her. The soreness had reduced, although the place still tingled and itched her slightly.

"Why do you love me?" Zina repeated, unabashed. She loved him of course, perhaps far longer than he could conjure the endearment, but that was not the point.

"Does a man need any reason to love such a beautiful woman like you?"

She rolled her eyes, snuggling deeper into his body as the biting cold reared its ugly head together with her Heat. Her satisfaction started to ebb away, at the same time, she felt his member start to harden where it was pressed against her thighs.

"I’m sure you understand what I am asking about."

His eyes that had returned to its normal dark color took her in. "Are you sure you want to hear the answer?"

She simply nodded.

He smiled; he was doing that a lot lately. "Of course there’s not an exact reason why I love you, Zina. I don’t know much about love, but I don’t believe it’s always logical." He chuckled, causing his chest to tumble slightly. "Only you would ask such a question. But if you were to ask, then I would say I love how your hair catches in the light, lending you an ethereal look. And I love how your eyes are a pale blue that somehow manages to speak of a hardness that is quite in contrast."

As he spoke the words, his fingers gripped locks of her hair, and then trailed down to the corners of her eyes which he caressed lightly, causing that area of her skin to tickle. Those same fingers of his trailed down to her lips.

"I love how luscious your lips are too. I’m always tempted to take a bite off it."

Zina smacked him playfully on the chest. "Oh, believe me when I say you bit it enough for today."

His chest rumbled with laughter, and finally, his fingers trailed down until it was resting on the space between her breasts. In a grim, hoarse voice. "Most importantly, I love that you’re strong. Strong enough that you wouldn’t always need my protection."

Zina stilled at that as dialogues from their heated conversations earlier that night came to her. Daemon had confessed that his apprehension to not claim her was because he feared for the pain that she would pass through should he pass away.

Zina refused to accept such a pathetic excuse. And even then as they lay together, she wanted to make it clear that she had never envisioned a world without him. So whatever travails that laid before them, whether it be on how to defeat enemies known and unknown, Zina would always stand by him. She would never let him face the revenge he intended to take alone... not even if he intentionally excluded her.

She would somehow manage to push her way in, she was sure of that much.

Placing her palm against his chest where his heartbeat sounded, Zina smiled up at him.

"I would not be made a widow, Daemon. And that is because come what may, I shall fight it together with you."

"Mmmm... I do admit that Widow Zina doesn’t sound good on you."

A joke to derail them from the importance of their conversation, but Zina refused to be distracted easily. Gripping his jaw until he was staring straight at her, Zina continued.

"It seems to me that you’ve forgotten who you’re. You’re Daemon NorthSteed, Alpha King of the North who acquired his Supreme Shifter form through his hard work and resilience. You now build your house on the grounds of choosing the most capable of subordinates, so your kingdom is sure to be the most prosperous, and your house the strongest. Believe me, whoever controls this Deformed of a thing should fear you instead."

Daemon seemed to have frozen while listening to her. He didn’t move in the least, eyes wide with surprise taking her in. Finally, he spoke. "Great Seer, your words are like a spell, binding me."

Zina smiled. "Does that mean if I say you should leave the position of Theta to me, you will do so without objections?"

He shook his head while laughing, "Ahhh... I do not believe that I am that spell bound yet. Our gamble is still on."

Zina gasped in despair although she was merely playing. Pouting, she said. "I guess I would have to fight harder by then."

And she meant it... she would fight harder until she was worthy enough to protect Daemon as well. She won’t leave any stone unturned; whether it be her ability to see the future or her ability to scream, she planned on using her arsenal of unpolished skills to aid Daemon’s reign.

"Don’t I look forward to it," Daemon responded, pulling her body closer to his until their lips met in a toe tingling kiss.

Amidst the wet slob of their tongue, Zina managed to ask while slightly panting. "Surely you do not mean to keep me imprisoned anymore?"

Daemon stopped kissing her, his eyes hardening like marble. "I will not compromise your safety for anything. I wasn’t joking when I said there’s a mad man after you."

Mad man? When Zina had read the ransom letter, the writings certainly didn’t seem like that of a mad man.

"I truly do not know who it could be."

"I believe you, and I trust you. But I don’t trust him."

Sins big her lips between her teeth. Did it mean she would still be under house arrest? And until when?

Daemon sighed loudly at the sight that was on her face. "You’ve two options before you; it’s either you remain sequestered in your chambers, or you can wander around the castle and as far as the Temple as long as you accept the thirty men security I intend to impose on you."

Without missing a beat, Zina quickly answered. "I choose the second option."

Daemon smiled darkly, and then began to kiss her again, although this time without any softness. His kisses were rough and bruising, but she didn’t mind at all. Instead she basked in his attention as he took her till morning came.
