Chapter 217: Uncle Daemon?

ZINA

That night, Zina’s dreams of a blissful and beautiful family with Daemon turned into a violent, bloody dream where a hand wrapped around her throat and kept choking her as if it wanted to eliminate her means of air instead. Thereafter, she saw her mother who was the perfect replica of her features, bound in multiple silver chains that were coated with black elements.

She hung mid air, stuck in perpetual pain as her flesh only burnt and burned from the silver chains. The room she was stuck in seemed to be caged in darkness itself, and yet, the woman whom Zina realized she bore a striking resemblance to was light itself in the chaotic darkness that surrounded her.

When Zina finally screamed herself awake, not sure of which of the things she had seen were simply nightmares or her visions, the side of her bed was empty and cold.

Daemon was gone.

Sweat caused her hair to stick to her face, and she wiped at it with the back of her hand. Truly, she could not keep living like that. She intended to tell Daemon about her mother, and maybe the man would conjure a solution to finding the woman.

At least she was certain that her mother had not communicated to her from the world of the dead, so if she was among the living, where the hell was she at? And why had she not been able to seek her out yet? Briefly, she wondered if the image of the woman bound in chains she had seen in her dreams was true. The thought sent her heart into overdrive.

Zina hugged her legs while Daemon’s scent wrapped around her. She could smell him everywhere, on the duvet, the sheets, on her body. She had slept in his embrace last night. And she was sure that her violent nightmares only started when his warm embrace was gone.

Wrapped in the unnatural darkness of his room, it took minutes before Zina could finally muster the strength to stand from the bed and leave his room for hers. It was already morning making Zina wonder how the tournament had been so far.

She couldn’t imagine what a long night it must have been for the participants.

"Theta," Seraph whispered from the entrance to her dressing place while Zina went about brushing her mangled hair.

Zina turned to the direction of the call and Seraph’s eyes that shone with mischief met hers. "What is it again?" Zina said, not knowing what to make of the playfulness. It might not always seem like it, but Seraph was one of the most serious people she knew of. The girl hardly smiled.

"I’ve something for you," the girl responded, wiggling her eyebrows which only raised her hackles further.

"Do you now," Zina muttered, unsure.

On cue, a little being stepped out from behind Seraph, causing Zina to gasp.

"Yuri!" She screamed, the hair brush dropping from her hands while she ran the remaining step to the four year old girl who wouldn’t stop grinning at her.

Zina engulfed the girl in a tight hug as relief coursed through her blood. The girl hugged back with her tiny little fingers while she let out a muffled sob.

Anger at the thought of what the little girl might have gone through in the hands of her mother and then the Red Sisters replaced the relief that Zina was feeling. She detached herself from the hug while her eyes examined the girl for evident any physical harm in any form.

"Did they touch you? Did anyone harm you?!" Zina asked a bit harsher than she would have liked. In response, Yuri simply smiled while she wiped away her tears with the back of her little palm.

How could those monsters that called themselves the Red Sister not realize that she was just a child?! Yuri was so little, and why in their eyes, the young girl was acceptable to be initiated as a Red Sister?! Now that Zina’s anger had a new direction, all she wanted to do was claw and bite at the Red Sisters until there was nothing left of them.

Meanwhile, Yuri kept shaking her head while she smiled broadly although her smile was a bit sad. "Have you forgotten how strong I am? Of course I am unharmed."

Those words took the fight away from Zina as she collapsed on her haunches while her hands held Yuri’s. She was of course, aware of how mature and strong Yuri was at such a tender age, she just hadn’t been expecting that the girl would become used to the mindset that it was okay for someone as young as herself to show such rare strength.

And yet, Zina was glad at the very least.

"Are you sure they didn’t touch you?" She asked in a small voice because she needed the confirmation. All she needed was a name and a dead body was sure to turn up the next day. She could swear on that fact with her soul.

Yuri shook her head even more vigorously. "My tears are simply from the joy of seeing you, Theta." She bowed her head, shifting on her feet, "you said you will visit, but you never did."

The disappointment in her voice was like a punch to her gut. Her promise to Yuri had been unfulfilled in part because in those three weeks, she had become crazy busy with the coronation of Daemon given the man’s absence. But being a victim of a turbulent childhood herself, she knew she had no excuse.

"Forgive me, Yuri, it will not happen again."

"Are you sure?" The girl asked with doubtful, sad eyes.

Zina hugged her again while she whispered to her ears. "Of course I am sure. Because from now on, you will live in this castle with me, and no one will be able to take you away... not even creepy monsters."

Yuri giggled hard, the sound tickling Zina’s neck from where the girl’s face was buried in her neck.

"I am returning home?" Yuri asked in a voice filled with awe and hesitance.

Zina remembered Daemon’s words at the same time; family is not who you share blood with. Yuri might not know if, but the girl had the most awesome uncle. One who didn’t care for the fact that her father was a bastard and her mother was an ingrate.

"Your uncle the Alpha King had decreed it. And remember, the king’s order cannot be defiled not by the heavens nor the earth. It stands final."

The girl escaped from the hug, worried eyes meeting Zina’s. "Uncle Daemon?" She asked, her eyes fearful. Zina wondered what the girl had heard about the man.

"Yes, uncle Daemon. He will take care of you." Zina answered, offering the girl her most genuine smile.

Yuri stuck out her pinky finger. "Promise?"

Zina wrapped the pinky with one of hers. "Promise."
