Chapter 175: Why Do You Run Away From Me?
ZINA
"Because I intend to claim you, Zina. As mine, my mate, my wife, my Luna, my all."
....
....?
Zina had never experienced a volcanic explosion before. She had heard of it alright, and the description fit right with the motions her heart was going through at that moment.
Would she survive this? Did she want to survive this?
Instinctively, like she was running away from the big bad wolf, she tried to step away from Daemon and his words, but he only gripped her chin harder, not giving her any chance to escape.
Her heart thudded in her ears, the sound causing her to pant hard as all she could see was dark eyes that swallowed her world whole, and those eyes held promises enough to wreck her.
Surely, he was joking?
Surely, he could not be serious?
No matter how much Zina tried to think about it, it just didn’t make much sense. That there had gone from enemies, a natural consequence of her lies, to two people who were now mates. She did understand the yearning on her side; the reason why she would want this man. But she didn’t understand why he would want her like this....
...as his, his mate, his wife, his Luna, his all.
"Why?" The question spilled out of her unbidden, sounding cruel in her own hearing. "Why do you want to claim me?" She asked because she truly yearned to know the true answer to that question.
Daemon smiled cynically. "Have you not been getting rid of your vow because you want me to claim you?"
So he knew of it. Of course he had found out of what she was doing in the three weeks he had been absent. But damn, she felt a need to slap the smugness out of his face, but that need was buried by the fog of desire that surrounded them.
His hands were still gripping her chin, and it burned there. Although not as much as his eyes burned her, threatening to eviscerate her whole.
"Don’t try to avoid the question and give me a direct answer for once." Zina pressed further, unwilling to be buried once again in his eyes.
The man was saying words that moved her, and she was rightfully scared of it.
Of course the notion that she could stand tall by his side was an endearing one. But she had never thought he would be one to willingly make such a proposition... she had thought she would have to fight for such a chance.
Had she read him wrong? Did she truly know nothing of the man?
Daemon narrowed his eyes at her, seemingly taking in her distress and lack of trust. "For what other reason would a man want to claim his mate?" He drawled, although the words were more angry than teasing.
"I don’t know, maybe to mark your property."
Daemon narrowed his eyes even more till they were dangerous slits. "What do you mean by that?"
"You had Falcon imprisoned." Zina said, not bothering to hide the accusation in her words. When she had discovered that the reason why she had not been seeing the Alpha Prince was because Daemon had personally imprisoned him, anger had burned in her blood.
The only thing that had saved Daemon from hearing her thoughts was the fact that the man had been absent, and now that he was standing before him, Zina couldn’t help but dredge up the bitterness in her.
She should be content really. She should be thrilled that she had a man who was willing to cut off hands and imprison men for her. She should be happy that she had a man who was willing to shield her from the repercussions of her identity, and yet, Zina feared for that kind of love.
For what would happen if he no longer felt the need to cut off hands and imprison men for her... what would happen to her if he no longer possessed the urge to shield her from the world?
When his primal needs evaporated, she would be left alone wandering in the desert once again.
Just like the WolfKnight’s had discarded her when she was no longer useful to them, and just like her birth parents discarded her too. Only that she feared she wouldn’t be able to survive it if Daemon did the same to her.
She would truly not survive it.
Zina took a step back, desperate to escape from his loosening grip. She almost found reprieve until Daemon tugged her by her waist with his other hand until their chests were pressed against each other.
Zina’s eyes widened, the beat of their heart mixing together under the press of her warm breasts on his hard chest.
"Falcon expressed his interest to take what is mine," Daemon growled in her face, his breath leaving goosebumps on her skin. "The fact he is still alive with his body parts intact is already a testimony of my boundless grace."
They were so close that Zina was hardly getting the intended meaning of his words. Wait, Falcon had challenged Daemon’s claim? She would make sure to deck the other man when they meet again, but for now, she had a battle to win against the man before her.
"Your boundless grace?" Zina repeated right in his face, "Falcon is my friend!"
Daemon scoffed like he was yet to hear something as ridiculous as what Zina had just spewed. "Your friend?" He repeated sarcastically, "what friend wants to sleep with their friend?"
The goddess, Zina wanted more than anything to wipe the smirk out of his extremely too-gorgeous m-to-look-at-face, but she didn’t know how to. Instead, she kept panting, glaring at him.
"Have Falcon released!" Zina screamed because she didn’t know what else to say. She was already struggling to keep her true emotions at the bay and Daemon had a way of bringing out the worst in her.
"Why don’t we address the real reason why you’re avoiding my offer," Daemon said unsmiling.
Zina whipped her head to the side as if that would prevent Daemon from seeing her true demons, but she forgot she was dealing with a demon herself.
He gripped her by the jaw, bringing her face dangerously close to his. "You say you want more, and the moment I give you more you want to run away...." He gritted.
The intensity of his eyes and the truth in them simply took her breath away the bad way, and Zina found herself struggling to escape his grip.
Her breath whooshed out of her unnaturally, her heart constricting painfully, and no matter how much she hit his broad shoulders to escape him, Daemon didn’t relent on his hold of her. Not even her panic attack was enough to deter the man.
His words came raining down on her like a claw attack she couldn’t escape.
"You say you won’t sever yourself from me if I don’t sever myself from you, so why are you keeping yourself away from me...."
"Da...Daemon...." She struggled to speak, but she might as well have been talking to water for she could not hear herself even.
"Tell me what you’re so afraid of?" He taunted, "Tell me why you run away from me?"
Something snapped in her and before she knew it, she was screaming the answer without any thought for herself.
"Because you will leave me one day, and I fear I won’t survive it!"
