Chapter 141: Betrayal
Chapter 141: Betrayal
ZINA
Freya Fergus.
Zina heard the name that morning when she woke up as if it was being hissed by a man that she didn’t know of. And when she closed her eyes as white flowers submerged her in a world that saw the world, all she could see was a bare-chested man putting on a cultural masquerade mask while speaking to a woman.
Freya Fergus.
It was a past vision alright, but Zina was not given time to process or understand the scene. But she knew that vision had been a warning. A warning that became apparent as she stared at the sprawled body of the woman that Daemon had saved.
Startlingly, said woman’s figure from the vision closely resembled that of the woman currently sprawled at the infirmary, and Zina had taken a wild guess by calling her the same name the man with a red masquerade mask spoke in the vision.
Freya Fergus.
Zina’s heart thumped at the realisation that she had gotten the very wild guess right. But still, the knowledge that somehow, the woman was the same with the vision that had slammed into her that morning was almost frightening. But Zina showed nothing of her scare.
Not when Freya was looking at her like she was the devil herself.
"How have you come to know my name?" She asked, standing straighter as all pretense that she was sick was successfully wiped off.
"Take a guess?" Zina taunted back.
The woman smiled shrewdly. "Did Daemon tell you about me? Last I checked, he isn’t close enough with you to share his secrets."
Secrets.
The word was meant to be both a torture and an insult to Zina, a fact that wasn’t exactly lost on her.
"So you slit your wrists to get his attention?" Zina commented, her eyes perusing through the woman’s bandaged wrist. It reminded her of a long time ago when her hands were in a similar state.
"When you put it like that, it makes me sound crazy." Freya answered with a broad grin as she swept demeaning eyes over Zina.
"Ahh, but you’re crazy aren’t you?" Zina sneered, not believing the fact that Daemon was somehow connected to the woman. Seeing how blatant Freya was being with her shrewdness, Zina truly dreaded coming to the knowledge of the connection she shared with Daemon.
"Maybe." Freya responded, laughing maniacally as if to support the fact that she was indeed crazy.
Zina glared at the woman, unable to force past the question bubbling within her.
Who is Daemon to you? And what relationship do both of you share together?
The questions remained stuck in her throat like an errant fish bone she mistakenly swallowed while eating a food she despised, and Freya’s eyes glinted as if she knew well of her unspoken questions.
Her cold voice swept over to Zina."We were once mates? He must have told you that, didn’t he?"
Zina stilled as her world zeroed into that singular moment. It felt as if her breath had been harshly stolen by a thief, and she was unable to move nor make a show of strength as she had been acting.
Daemon brought in his first mate? The same one he said he rejected?
Zina felt a foreign emotion twist into her chest, causing her pain. She might as well have been sprawled on the floor while she begged for her life for she was truly lost for words.
She tried to put a name to the emotion she was feeling, and only one word came to her... betrayal.
She felt betrayed.
She felt used.
She felt lied to.
And damn it all to hell, but she believed she had all the right to feel all those ways.
How could he play her body like beautiful music at night while tending to his first love in the day.
How dare him blatantly stow her away like some mistress while he openly paraded his first mate in the day while tending to her.
The vile emotion swept over Zina like a vise grip until she feared her legs would not be able to hold her up anymore. She tried to keep off the emotions on her face, but the mask she wore cracked under the force of her overwhelming sorrow.
Freya wasn’t done yet. Eyes glinting with averse satisfaction she continued. "So he didn’t tell you. I guess he must have found it difficult to express the profound love and affection we share for each other. Especially seeing as we were childhood friends turned mates."
’Do not fall for her words’, Zina chanted in her head. ’She is only trying to taunt you and make you lose your composure.’
Collecting herself, Zina said in an attempt to save face. "But he rejected you."
Freya looked genuinely amused on hearing those words. "Whoever told you that? Our rejection was a mutual one. No one rejected the other."
The thin thread that was holding together Zina’s heart snapped, and her heart shattered against the invisible glass floor before her.
Mutual Rejection.
Zina remembered when she had asked Daemon what happened between him and his first mate, and the only response the man gave was one word...
....’rejection’.
He had never said he rejected her, or she rejected him... Zina had simply assumed that must have been the case.
In fact, she had imagined that it was the woman who must have rejected Daemon. And remembering her own rejection in the hands of Jacen Vampage, she had foolishly formed some sort of kinship with the man.
Oh, how foolish and utterly stupid she had been.
Once again, Daemon had won their round.
"Why are you here?" Zina managed to ask as the vile emotion twisted her shattered heart. She hated that she was this way, and more than that, she hated the man responsible for it.
Daemon NorthSteed.
The woman smiled. "To reconcile with my first love of course."
Shamefully, Zina found that she had no retort before this very beautiful woman. Her already skewed confidence in herself coupled with her own issues when it came to forming relationships had plummeted any gracefulness she would have normally possessed.
Clutching the sides of her white gown in her hand, she managed to muster an expression that was not as pathetic as she was seconds ago.
"You asked me how I’ve come to know your name?" Zina drawled in a threatening voice that almost shook from her own shock at the woman’s revelations about her and Daemon’s relationship.
She searched the woman’s eyes for any evidence that would reveal her purpose in appearing in her vague visions that morning , "Just know that I saw you with the masked man, and I will always have my eyes on you, Freya Fergus."
Every smidge of smugness the woman once bore was wiped away as she stared at Zina with an expression mixed with horror and confusion. But almost immediately as the expression came, it was wiped off as she donned on a mask of nonchalance.
"You know nothing, Zina WolfKnight."
Zina stormed away from the infirmary as the shrewd truth of her words weighed on her.
She truly knew nothing indeed.
And yet, that didn’t stop her from stalking towards Daemon’s office. She shouldn’t be doing so when she was so angry she could taste it on her lips, but reason had alas, finally eluded her.
’Always think with your head and not your heart’. Somehow she knew she was about to break that rule.
