Chapter 139: The Grand Healer

Chapter 139: The Grand Healer

ZINA

Zina left the Luna Queen’s quarters more angry than she originally came in while Bella’s last, menacing words kept repeating in her head like a dark promise.

"No one will ever take Suri away from me as long as I am not Luna Queen. The BloodMoon’s will never stand for it."

Zina didn’t know why, but for some reason she could smell trouble. The best she could probably do was ask Daemon to take charge of Suri, but even that endeavour didn’t seem like it would yield much fruit.

Frustrated once again at her lack of ability to do anything, Zina found herself inching towards the castle’s infirmary.

As far as she was concerned, at that moment, she was not some jealous woman but a Theta that was concerned for the safety of the castle. A safety that Daemon didn’t seem to be taking that seriously.

"Theta."

Greetings rang out from the infirmary workers as Zina casually made her way into the place while responding to the workers’ bows. She noticed that it was heavily guarded unlike usual by some nondescript Epsilons that were casually hanging around. That only served to raise her hackles.

"Is it already time for your visit?" The wide eyed healer who served as a receptor at the infirmary asked, referring to Zina’s once in three months supervisory visit at the infirmary.

Zina smiled, shaking her head. "No. I’m here for a different reason."

The healer smiled warmly in response. "What can I help you with, Theta?"

Zina inched over, leaning down to speak to the woman from over the counter where she sat. "I’m actually here to see someone. I heard that two nights ago, this person was picked from the castle’s gates in a bloody mess."

The healer’s eyes widened, her warm, welcoming smile disappearing altogether. She opened her mouth and closed it like a fish in water searching for what to say while Zina stared at her suspiciously through narrowed eyes.

The woman was saved from having to answer when the Grand Healer of the infirmary, a woman with a terrible temper, interrupted.

"What is the pure Theta doing in a bloodied place such as this. I fear your white robes will be stained if you continue to stay here."

Zina whirled around, her lips curving at the sight of the woman into a smile that did nothing to betray her despair at being suddenly faced against the woman who annoyed her to no end.

"Grand Healer." Zina greeted through a sweet smile that didn’t disguise her gritting teeth.

"Theta." The old woman answered through a sneer of her own.

Faced against each other, the disparity in their figures couldn’t have been more obvious. For while Zina was moderately tall for a woman, the Grand Healer was a voluptuous woman whose head only reached Zina’s chest. But that didn’t stop the old woman from looking as domineering as she truly was.

"I’ve come to visit the woman who was brought here two nights ago under his majesty, the Alpha King’s, care. You wouldn’t mind now would you?" Zina said more forcefully than she would normally do.

"I would mind, Theta. And not only would I mind, but his majesty would mind too."

"I am here under his majesty’s orders." Zina lied easily, maintaining eye contact with the woman who narrowed her eyes suspiciously at her.

"Are you now, Theta?" The woman said, searching Zina for a dent that would expose her lies. But against her search, Zina maintained an impassive mask that she borrowed from a page in Daemon’s book of blandest expressions.

The Grand Healer, of course, found nothing to expose her lies. But she wouldn’t let go easily as Zina had expected.

"I shall send an Epsilon back to confirm."

"You would only be wasting time," Zina interjected forcefully. "The sun is just at the right horizon and I am to conduct a divination for the woman. If we miss the right timing, we won’t get another opportunity until fifty more days."

The woman frowned, rooted in disbelief and rightfully so. "I wasn’t aware that you’re now a diviner, Theta."

"Oh, you will be surprised at the many talents a Great Seer can possess."

The woman’s eyes shone with emotions that closely resembled hate. In fact, it was hate that swirled in the woman’s eyes and they both knew the reason why even though Zina liked to dismiss the Grand Healers visceral emotion towards her as mere annoyance.

The fire that burned in the woman’s eyes cooled abruptly in a manner that made Zina suspicious of her sudden ease.

"Fine. I shall let you see the one whom you seek," the Grand Healer said, taking a step forward to Zina. "However, are you sure you can bear the sight that lies inside the room you wish to step into?"

Zina squinted at the woman. "What do you mean by that?"

The woman took another menacing step closer. "I mean your mind? Has it healed since then five years ago?"

Zina stiffened immediately she understood where the woman was going about with her weird words. Her hands suddenly felt clammy with sweat and her breath was coming out faster and heavier than usual.

She whipped her head to the side, abounding contact with the woman as she was reminded for the first time that she was at the infirmary. A place that spelt more bad news for her than good news.

"I assure you that I am fine." She said in a voice that slightly shook against her intentions.

A strong, firm hand gripped her chin. "Are you sure about that?" The Grand Healer sneered, her grey eyes way too closer than Zina would have liked.

Grey eyes that Zina still remembered more than anything from that horrible night.

Zina tried to detangle herself from the woman’s grip that was surprisingly very strong, but her efforts were futile. The walls about her closed against her and she could suddenly no longer breathe at all.

"The woman inside that room," the woman’s voice carried on in the fog that Zina was now trapped in, "also has slitted wrists just as you yourself had that night when you were rushed in here five years ago."

The invisible water that was pooling around Zina came up to her neck, drowning her in a past of blood and shame that she thought was now all in the past.
