Chapter 135: Back From The Brink

ZINA

Blood.

Time had barely passed in their physical world despite all the conversations Zina had with the red eyed woman.

Standing at the great hall, they both held each other stare for a fleeting moment... but the moment was well enough to communicate that their conversation had truly happened.

Almost immediately, Norima Talga resumed her strides like nothing happened in the first place, while the eyes in the room followed the strange woman. And she didn’t stop until she got in front of Daemon, bowing seductively to greet him, before taking her place by his left alongside Fionna and Yaren.

Zina could barely contain the overwhelming urge to pull on Daemon’s hair and chide him for ever getting involved with the Five Great Evils in the first place. No matter how smart and cunning he thought himself to be, they were things that were best left untouched.

And one of those things was the Night Mages for example, and by implication, that included the Albino woman that stood across from her.

Things were beginning to make sense to Zina. Even though there was still much to understand, at least she now knew why the White Monks had been after her.

They feared that Zina would end whatever sparse grip they had over Vraga, a fear that was unfounded in her opinion. But it didn’t matter; Zina was smarter than Daemon in that aspect and she didn’t intend to dabble with the Five Evils.

She would continue on to avoid them as she had always done as long as they avoided her too.

Calming her racing heart and shrugging off the horrible words that the Night Mage had spew, Zina looked between Daemon and his three older brother’s whose widened eyes shared the confusion that swirled in Zina’s mind.

"Wh... what?" Breck, who had been initially grovelling and begging stuttered. "A war?" He chuckled warily, "you must be joking, right?"

Daemon’s eyes merely swept from the man and rested on Zina blatantly as if he wanted everyone in the room to know that he was indeed staring at the woman. Zina held her ground, staring back at him as what was supposed to be his cool stare heated her body in wicked ways.

"Did you not hear that the White Monks conspired with Traitor Eldric StormWalker to take the Theta’s life!" Daemon growled, his nose flaring as if he was truly angry. "I can stand a lot of blemish, but an attempt on the Theta’s life is simply one I cannot take."

Zina stared at him in horror, a scoff escaping her. Was he truly being serious? The urge to roll her eyes so hard and stomp her feet against the floor was overwhelming but she chose to contain herself and maintain her prestigious image that always seemed to want to shatter before him.

Zina shut her eyes from exasperation, not attempting to show any signs of curiosity nor to scoop the reason behind Daemon’s all but abrupt declaration. She was beginning to learn that it was a truly hard thing to keep track of the man’s mind which was like a maze with multiple entry ways and only one exit.

Silence greeted her mind and she wondered why no one was talking or begging as the case maybe. Prying one eye open to investigate the cause of the sudden silence, the sight of everyone’s eyes on her was all she could see and feel.

She stood straighter, clearing her throat as it seemed everyone was waiting for her to say something in reaction to Daemon’s claim. She shot the culprit in question with a glare disguised as a sweet smile.

"I am eternally grateful for the incumbent Alpha King’s concern over my lowly life." Zina said, slightly panting from the force it had taken to shove such despicable words out of her lips.

She knew Daemon’s actions far from stemmed from his concerns about her.

"Theta Zina WolfKnight," Alpha BloodMoon finally spoke for the first time, his voice laced with its usual bitterness, "you’re the one whom the White Monks intended to kill so please do tell us if you think it is wise for us to wage a war when we ourselves barely lead a steady kingdom!"

Zina looked back at Daemon, trying to read the man’s intentions as it became evident that she herself would not be able to escape the hot seat he had intentionally put her on.

The Hundred Savage Rules that existed centuries past have a rule that dictates that whenever a pack attempts to harm a high ranked member of another pack, then the latter pack can rightfully seek revenge by meting out the worst punishment to the former pack which could be extermination of the pack.

Hence, in the eyes of the Savage Rules, Daemon was right in using the harm that almost came to her as an excuse to wage war.

But...

Without thinking it over, Zina stood squarely, folding her palm over each other and resting them against her abdomen.

"Alpha BloodMoon is right. While I am most grateful for your concern, Alpha King, this is not the time to wage a war."

Alpha BloodMoon huffed like Zina agreeing with him was the most natural thing on earth. The man probably thought that she was siding with him but he was sorely wrong. While his objections originated from his petty anger towards Daemon, Zina was more concerned about Daemon’s relations with the Five Evils.

However the storm of anger that simmered with Daemon’s eyes made her almost rethink her stance. His anger was visceral in a manner that was not too evident but still managed to flare through Zina’s body.

"Does the Theta purport to tell me how to take revenge for the pack?" His sarcastic words travelled to her, and she could tell by how many were looking between the both of them that the true status of their relationship was being weighed.

Her heat had passed so Daemon spending the night with her could be passed off as mere temptation. But now they were all lucid, true desire and seduction was easily distinguished.

Ignoring the bruising stares from the small crowd in the hall, Zina answered easily. "I would never dare to do so. However the people need their king now and not a war. A fact that I am sure you know of course, your majesty."

Something hard slammed against the map table as the anger that previously simmered in Daemon’s eyes now scorched like blazing coals. The same anger was mirrored in Yaren’s features, and for the life of Zina she didn’t understand why they were angry.

All she sought to do was to protect the people. A sentiment she was sure that Daemon shared, but now his reaction only confused her.

"My decision is final. Alpha Axel, Breck, and Calden will be stripped of their position as Lords and banished to the NorthWestern borders to engage the White Monks in battle with their pack."

The mantle of his decision fell like a heavy hammer in the room, and before Zina could stop herself, she took a step forward from Falcon’s side.

Breathlessly, she rattled off. "I am afraid your majesty that this decision is not one you can make by yourself. You will have to consult your subordinates, and as far as I can see, it is only I, the Theta, who still stands with her head intact as your direct subordinate, and it is my duty to protect the rear of the pack."
