Chapter 122: A Body At The Gates
Chapter 122: A Body At The Gates
DAEMON
"Have every male servant in the castle been moved to the west wing?" Daemon asked Yaren who was trailing by his side while wearing a concerned expression.
"I have so don’t worry about the Heat wave reaching them. It is you I am worried about though... are you sure it is okay to hang around her while she is in that state?"
Yaren’s concerned eyes travelled to Daemon’s bloodied palm. The wound was healing, but it was still bleeding a lot as the gash Daemon had created with his claws was so deep it almost came out to the other side of his hand.
"Instead of harming yourself like so, I think it would be better if you avoided her all together." Yaren said with a frown, "I am still concerned about her control."
Daemon chuckled, wrapping the wound with a cloth. He had created the gash with some of his wolf venom so it would take some few hours to completely heal.
"If I were you I would not be worried about her control. You would be amazed at how put together she still is despite the intensity of her heat." Daemon said easily, masking the bitterness that was sewn at the hidden seams of his words.
Zina’s heat had been so potent and alive that the woman could barely smell the blood from the wound that Daemon had created on his body in a desperate attempt at holding onto his last shred of control.
A last shred of control that shattered to pieces multiple times that night in the presence of the woman whom he now found maddening.
It was a good thing that Zina WolfKnight was suddenly blind that night. For if she had seen his distraught, the way he had run his fingers through his hair multiple times from frustration, the way he had wounded himself to rid himself of the aphrodisiac effect of her heat, the way that his wolf had raged through his eyes to let it all go and just claim her....
...if she had seen it all and acted on them, Daemon would have been a goner by now.
He must be a slave for self torture, for that night, he had truly pushed himself to the cliff of his control. He had shredded every self reservation he had for himself the moment he stepped into a bath with a naked Zina who was emitting the kind of heat that would bring a Supreme Wolf to his hunches, and a king to his knees.
He had punished himself so hard that he had come out so hard with no point of relief for himself. His hand did a terribly poor job, and the fact that his wolf only chanted for Zina didn’t help him in his quest of finding another woman who would sate his needs.
Mate! Only she would satisfy us!
It was true that control was important to him, but Daemon was really beginning to rethink his stance on claiming Zina.
And to think that he was so far gone that he had found the need to lie to her.
"Oh, I am affected alright. But sleeping with you has never been a part of my plans."
Daemon did manipulation and deceit, but he didn’t do straight cut lies. Argue it all you want, but he believed they were different things and lying was not in him. He had never found the need to lie. Only cowards lie.
If he was going to kill someone, he would say it in their face.
If he was going to take something for himself, he would announce it to the world.
But Zina had tilted his axis, and now he found himself lying in the face of the one thing that he now wanted to claim more than anything.
"What about your control, Daemon?" Yaren asked pedantically, staring straight at him.
Daemon paused in his steps, tying the cloth tighter against his wound. He ignored the shot of pain that traveled all the way to his heart.
Who would have thought he would be harming himself just to deny the pull he felt towards his mate.
"Not this again Yaren." He gritted, conveying his warning.
He loved his half-brother. Even the underworld might testify to that fact, but amidst the chaos swirling in his mind, he simply couldn’t take Yaren’s expression of hate, towards Zina WolfKinght and all that happened six years ago, at that moment.
He needed space to think and sort himself out.
Yaren’s expression turned somber as he spoke in a less hardened tone. "Your thoughts towards her are changing, brother. I can see it shifting in your eyes. I always knew accepting this bond was not right."
His words were true, but Daemon chose to ignore them. "Make sure no male remains at the Northern Wing. Have the female Epsilons guard my room." He said in business mode.
"I will have that done."
"You wanted to report something?" Daemon asked, remembering that the only reason he had sought to see Yaren was because the man had conveyed that he had a serious issue to report.
Yaren’s expression turned grim, and something about the storm that brewed in the other man’s eyes raised Daemon’s hackles.
"Things to report actually, Alpha King."
Daemon shot him a look that said he should continue.
"It is true that the Theta was unaware of the fact that Eldric extorted thousands of bram gold coins from the regional elite packs under the pretense that she is to tell a vision about the world’s ending and how a few can avoid it."
Daemon had known as much, but he couldn’t say he felt bad for almost accusing Zina. The woman needed to be more confident in herself when she lived in a world of wolves wanting to rip each other apart.
"So she never told such a vision in the first place?"
Yaren shook his head grimly. "Never. But this ’prophecy’ caused quite the stir among the regional elites. They were somehow made to believe that it was some secret they should keep which is why the Theta never caught a whiff of it."
Daemon nodded, cracking his knuckles. The mess Eldric left for him just kept getting bigger and bigger.
"What else?"
This was the point where Yaren would inform him of what had him looking so grim.
"The scouts found the bloodied body of a woman in front of the castle side gates during the dead of the night...."
Daemon stared at Yaren blandly, not knowing where he was going with that. Dead bodies were not exactly unusual, and there had been plenty of them since his uprising.
"The body belonged to Freya." Yaren finished....
... and Daemon froze.
