The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 53: Fateful Warnings
Chapter 53: Fateful Warnings
“From the olden days, people in this Kingdom have always worshipped the moon. Its importance is still recognized and celebrated today. The night of the full moon is believed to bring prosperity and well as fertility,” Madame Cassandra explained before she smiled at me.
It was very rare for me to see her smile. I was more used to her stern and sometimes even scornful expression, so it was a pleasant change to see her smile for once.
“The full moon doesn’t just impact the fate of people but also the lives of wild animals. Some animals can go wild during this special night...” she continued saying.
“Go wild?” I asked curiously.
“Stay locked up in your room. Don’t open the door for anyone unless it is me. Do you understand?” the madame instructed before making sure that I understood.
Suddenly, she had reverted to her serious and stern self again.
“Yes...” I replied with a nod of my head.
...
**Night of the Full Moon**
The dream that I had last night was probably one of the scariest that I’ve ever had. Ever since Prince Leonard saved me from the wolve in the forest and I saw his full face with his magnificent blue eyes, I kept dreaming of him. Every night when I went to bed and closed my eyes, sleep would take over me, and soon after, I would be transported to the land of dreams where he was always waiting for me. Unlike the dreams that I’ve had before where at first, I couldn’t see his face and then I saw him as a masked man, I could see his entire face clearly along with his intense blue gaze in all of my dreams.
In some dreams, we talked about things that I couldn’t even recall. In some others, he took me to places that I have never seen. Slowly, the dreams that used to leave me feeling troubled and confused made me feel a little happier. In those dreams, he always smiled at me and his voice when he spoke to me was gentle. However, that didn’t apply at all to the dream of him that I had last night.
I dreamt that I was lost somewhere inside of his palace. For what seemed like a long time, I wandered aimlessly along a long hallway. I didn’t know where I was trying to go; however, I knew that I was lost. My mind was confused, and I was consumed with anxiousness. The yellow moonlight that shone through the glass windows that lined one side of the hallway casted shadow onto the ground at my feet. My body shivered and my lips trembled.
Suddenly, a wolf howled in the distance while I continued to wander the seemingly endless corridor. After a moment, the hallway was silent again and all I could hear was the wild thumping of my own heart. However, it wasn’t long before the silence was broken by a groan that sounded so suffocating and painful. I was immediately drawn to that sound and although I didn’t understand the reason why, my body began running towards the source of that sound.
I arrived at a large and tall wooden door. The painful groans and moans grew louder, and I could tell that it was indeed coming from behind this closed door. I had no idea why I was so brave, but my hand did not hesitate to turn the doorknob and push the door open. Surprisingly, the door wasn’t locked from the inside. My dream didn’t seem to make any sense because the moment that I saw who was inside the room, it felt like I had been looking for him all my life. I was just relieved and ecstatic to finally see him.
His bloodshot blue eyes didn’t shine like they used to as they stared at me. I had no idea why he was in such a state. Shocked, I couldn’t move as I listened to the sound of his harsh breathing.
“Help me...” he whispered in a pained voice.
I woke up screaming in my small and narrow bed. Dawn had just broken, and my nightmare had come to an abrupt end. Needless to say, my dream bothered and haunted me all day long. I tried to think about it rationally as I repeated to myself that dreams were nothing more than just dreams.
It’s not real.
I was probably having dreams of the prince because it had been many days since I last saw him. That and the fact that I haven’t had a chance to thank him for saving my life.
Just like in my dream, I paced along the hallway restlessly without knowing where I wanted to go. It was just another day that reminded me of how useless I was. Even though, I felt better, and all my wounds have healed, I wasn’t allowed to lift even a finger to do any work. Those were Prince Leonard’s orders.
“Tonight’s the night of the full moon...” a maid said to her friend as they both walked along the hallway heading my way.
“I wonder if any of us maids will be selected...” the other woman said dreamily before they both laughed.
“Claudia seems very confident of herself,” one of the women replied.
“He’ll get bored of her soon enough,” her friend said before giggling.
They gave me a stare when they spotted me before quickly walking away. It seemed like I wasn’t going to make any more friends besides Jessie and Salena. I haven’t seen much of those girls these few days either. Everyone seemed busy with their work, and I was the only one hanging out in the maids’ quarters all day long without anything to do.
Back then, I had no idea that I already had my work cut out for me...
...
From where I came from, the night of the full moon had absolutely no significance. It came and passed by without anyone mentioning it. Some girls in the orphanage may point up enthusiastically at the round moon while telling me how beautiful it was and that I should take a look, but that was probably all. My first full moon night in the Kingdom of Locovia taught me that things were very different here compared to where I came from.
