The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid
Chapter 46: Just a Man

Chapter 46: Just a Man

Suddenly, my eyes could make out a moving shadow approaching where I was. The wolves around me began to shrink backwards as if a much larger predator that they couldn’t handle was approaching. As if this pack of wolves wasn’t bad enough already. Is a tiger approaching this time?

There was a series of loud rustling sound as the tree and its lower branches seemed to move. My eyes were glued to that spot as my body froze in panic again. If I’m going to die anyways, can we get this over as fast as possible, please?

The tension in the air was stifling and killing me...

“Somehow...I made it in time...”

A man?

My eyes widened as my hand flew to my mouth at the unexpected sound of a voice that I had gotten so familiar with. Instead of a larger wolf or a tiger, the tree branches parted to reveal just a man.

No, it’s so dangerous!

“Don’t come any closer! There are wolves all around here!” I shouted loudly.

The moment that my loud and desperate cry left my lips and echoed throughout the woods around me, I realized in shock that I had somehow found my voice again.

“You’re still worried about someone else even in the position that you’re in?” he said lightly before he started to chuckle.

After taking a couple of steps forward, he was completely out in the open. The moonlight shining down from above lit up his blonde hair and made him seem like some ethereal being that was sent down from the heavens to save me. The moonlight shone on him just enough for me to confirm that I had been right about recognizing his voice.

Why is he here?

That didn’t matter right now, and I wasn’t a fool to believe that he was an angel sent down from heaven to save me either.

He was just a man...

“It’s dangerous! Stay back!” I yelled to warn him.

Although the wolves had retreated a little, they were still all around me and probably now all around him as well. Instead of staying back like I had just warned him, the man smiled calmly at me before casually taking a few steps towards where I was.

Why isn’t he listening to my warnings?

Either because the clouds shielding the moon suddenly cleared or because he had stepped further into the light, I finally caught a full view of his well-composed face along with his alluringly bright blue eyes. I gasped as my hands flew to my mouth as another wave of shock took over me.

It can’t be...

“Come here...” the man beckoned.

To my further surprise, he crouched down onto the floor and gestured with both his hands for me to approach him. At least, that was what I thought at first. However, when the wolves suddenly started running over to where he was crouched down on the ground without paying any attention to me, I realized that he wasn’t beckoning to me in the first place.

Seeing the wild wolves rushing over to him made a scream escape my throat.

What is he doing?! Is he crazy?!

He’s going to get eaten...

“Sit first. Sit down...” the man commanded in a voice that was gentle and very kind.

My mouth dropped opened as my hands and arms fell down limply to my side. I sat there on the ground as my mind struggled to comprehend the scene unfolding before me. They say that the dogs that we kept as pets were related to the wild wolves in the forests and that somehow, they were bred and then domesticated sometime in the past. I finally understood and saw the irrefutable proof of that for myself in that moment when the entire pack of large wolves surrounded the man before sitting down in an orderly fashion around him like obedient children.

“She’s not food...” the man told the wolves before he laughed.

His laugh was beautiful and sounded just like music.

“What? You knew that? Really...?” he asked before making a skeptical face.

He’s speaking to him as if he could understand them and they could understand him.

What on earth is going on?

Somehow, it seemed like I was no longer in danger, and neither was he. The blond man continued talking and petting some of the wolves in the pack like they knew each other very well while I sat on my limp legs on the ground in confusion. Now that some of the tension had left my body, my entire body felt weak and tired.

When I looked up again, the man was crouched down right in front of me. I quickly glanced behind him in a panic just to find out that all the wolves seemed to have disappear into the darkness of the surrounding forest.

“So, how did a little girl like you get lost so far out here?” he asked teasingly.

I wondered about that myself. How and why did I have to end up here and in a situation like this?

I would have died if he hadn’t saved me.

The moonlight shining down from behind his head shrouded his face in shadow, but it felt like I could see his clear blue eyes as if the skies above were as clear and the same color instead of night. He stared down at me and I could feel his worry and concern. Slowly, his hand approached my face and then the back of his beautiful and long fingers touched my right cheek before he softly stroked me there. His touch felt warm, comforting, and strangely familiar.

“Let’s head back...” he whispered tenderly.

I wished that I had the strength to reply to him; however, my body felt heavy and then I started to feel so cold that I shivered. When I opened my mouth, I felt muted, and no sound would depart from my lips. With the last spurt of strength and willpower that I could muster, I lifted my shaky hand towards his face; however, before I could reach him, my eyes lost focus again I could no longer keep them open.
