Chapter 45: Hunted by Wolves

Chapter 45: Hunted by Wolves

My body froze in fear and suddenly the atmosphere around me felt very cold. My eyes widened as they focused on the golden eyes that seemed to glow in the darkness.

‘Beware of Wolves...’

My lower lips quivered as everything went completely silent all around me. My fear and panic made my chest felt tight as I stood there glued to the spot. The loud sound of my heart racing against my ribcage was the only sound that echoed in my ear.

Suddenly, there were more than one pair of eyes staring back at me. It was like some kind of dark magic how the number of golden yellow eyes staring back at me from the darkness seemed to multiply at such a rapid speed.

Before there was only one pair of eyes and now there were countless of them. My eyes darted all around me as even more of those golden orbs appeared in the darkness all around me.

I’m surrounded.

Just how many of them are there?

I never thought that I would feel so much peace in my last moment. How can a girl outrun a pack of wolves in the forest like this?

The answer that I arrived at was a simple and clear one: I can’t outrun them.

Precisely because of that, I am going to die here.

I closed my eyes before taking in a deep breath; however, instead of complete resignation, when I opened my eyes again my body had found a spurt of energy and the will to continue living.

Before I even knew what I was doing, my body had turned, and I was sprinting away from the pack of wolves. It was dark and the path was uneven at best. Leaves and branches tore at my bare arms and my face as I ran through the dimly lit forest. There wasn’t any light to light my way except for the moonlight shining down from above.

I had no idea if those wild animals were chasing me, and I didn’t have the time to turn around to check. The best that I could do was run for my life and that was exactly what I did. My footsteps were uneven, and I knew that outrunning them in this forest was going to be a miracle. I couldn’t hear the beasts, but I knew that they were after me. Sometimes, I would hear the distant sound of them howling in the distance and it made my skin crawl.

My hand instinctively reached out to steady myself against a tree trunk when I almost lost my balance. The only reason why I’m still alive must be because they’re toying with me and enjoying their hunt because I couldn’t think of another reason why I was still alive.

“Ahhh!” I cried out as the same sharp pain from before shot through my brain.

It hurts so much...

Unlike the last time that it happened, the pain was even more intense than before. It made my mind go blank and it made my head feel heavy. Suddenly, my eyes lost focus as another wave of pain took over my mind. This time, when I reached out my hand to clutched at a nearby tree, I ended up losing my balance before tripping and falling forward right onto my stomach. My hands reached out reflexively to break my fall, but it was still very painful.

“Ahhh! No...” I cried out and then whimpered in pain.

Although I knew that I had to get up and keep on running, my body would no longer obey my command as it refused to move. As if the tension and the fear had finally taken its toll on my body, I lost all strength and I couldn’t move or get up anymore.

Someone, please help me! Please help me!

I screamed repeatedly in my mind as all the time around me seemed to slow. My lips felt cold, and my throat felt very dry. All my exhaustion and dehydration had caught up with me and there wasn’t anything that I could do about anything anymore.

I don’t want to die...not like this...

It didn’t matter what I wished or prayed for. Help wasn’t coming. No one is here and I didn’t have a way to contact anyone or call for help. I wanted to have hope until the very end but accepting my fate seemed like the much easier way.

The sound of the beasts moving quickly surrounded me. The beasts moved in well synchronized motions and soon I could see more than just their eyes in the darkness as they surrounded me and came closer. I could see their body shape clearly now and I was right all along about them being wild wolves, very large ones. My body trembled in absolute fright like I had never experienced before. Their golden eyes were threatening and filled with bloodlust as they stared at me, their prey.

I’m going to die here...

Slowly, I closed my eyes as I laid on the ground surrounded by a pack of black and dark-grey wolves with threatening eyes. Suddenly, a loud howl rang out and echoed all around me. It was unlike any of the howls from earlier. It was louder and much closer. I heard it very clearly, but instead of making my skin crawl from fear, it made me feel warm and comforted.

My eyes flew open as a gasp escaped from between my lips. I found the energy to lift my head and upper body up to see what was going on as I felt the atmosphere around me quickly shift. The wolf suddenly seemed hesitant, and their attention and eyes was no longer focused on me.

The sound of something moving and approaching through the dark woods caught my attention. It wasn’t hard for me to figure out where the sound was coming from because all the wolves around me were looking in the same direction. A little to the right of where I was, the trees slowly parted as a sinking feeling filled my stomach.

Something dangerous is heading this way.

The loud howl from just now. Is it another wolf?
