The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 420: Fate Led Us Here
Chapter 420: Fate Led Us Here
I knew at that moment that I might not be able to move on if I did not have a good understanding of the prince’s involvement. One of the reasons that made me so happy when I was with the prince was because I could fully trust him, and this issue was clearly putting that trust into question. I desperately needed to find out the truth in order to continue trusting him.
"Please tell me the truth," I pleaded. I had decided that no matter how severe the truth was, I would rather hear it directly from him so that at least I could still trust his words to be truthful.
"Honestly, I only found out about it a couple of days ago when I had a talk with my father, and he told me to make my decision about becoming the next king. I met up with him today to further discuss things and also about plans for our wedding," the prince replied.
I stared deeply into his eyes, and it wasn’t difficult for me to believe him. After all, if I were to think about it carefully, the pursuit of my family was so long ago. Although Prince Leonard was older than me, he couldn’t have been old enough to come up with such a scheming plan. Just like me, back then, the prince must have been too young to even realize what was going on.
"I guess you were too young back then," I said softly.
"My father never told me anything about this. And I’m quite sure that my brothers probably don’t know anything about it either,” the prince replied with his eyes casted downwards.
“I’m glad that all of that has stopped...” I murmured.
"I agree. You’re also right that we were all too young to know anything about the world of adults back then when it happened," the prince said, and I could hear the regret in his tone, although none of the things that happened were probably directly his fault.
"I’m sorry, but this is just a lot for me to take in," I said, struggling to handle my own emotions.
It didn’t sit well with me that the king was somehow involved in my parents’ death and the misfortune that happened to my family. Although I knew very well that the prince wasn’t at fault, I still felt angry, and I couldn’t stop myself from thinking that perhaps being with him wasn’t what my parents wanted.
"Your parents did everything they could to save you. Back then, because we were so young and we had never met, there was no way for them to know that we would turn out to be fated mates," the prince tried to explain. I nodded my head slightly in agreement because I knew that my parents did everything to protect me, probably because they knew the fate that awaited me had I been captured, and they wanted me to have a normal life.
"I’m sure they didn’t want you to be involved in this world of wolves. However, considering the origins of your family and lineage, your parents must have known that you had wolf genes because they must have possessed quite prominent ones themselves; otherwise, they would never have made it onto the list of targets," the prince said solemnly. Everything he was saying made sense, and there was nothing I could say in response.
"Do you think my parents would have supported our relationship had they known that we were fated mates?" I asked, praying that the answer would lead me to salvation.
"I am honestly not sure. Perhaps your parents believed in the concept of fated mates and might have wanted to respect it as if it were another law of nature. But as you know, I have never been a fan of the concept, and I’ve always thought that it would take away all of our free will and determine who we are," the prince replied, pondering the concept in his mind before he came to a pause.
"I guess fate led us to meet each other in the end," I said as I recalled our first meeting. My parents’ efforts only delayed our meeting and changed the circumstances surrounding it. It felt like I had taken a detour just to arrive at the same destination that had always been planned out for me. Fortunately, I came to learn that the man waiting for me at that destination was someone that I love.
"Perhaps just like how it is useless for us to deny our fate and our bond, we are bound to be together in the end regardless of the actions of other people and what they wanted," the prince stated his own opinion.
"Thank you for telling me the truth," I thanked him honestly.
"I am sorry that it has to be so painful for you," the prince apologized, although it wasn’t at all his fault.
"It’s not your fault," I told him what I honestly thought.
For a moment, I thought that the prince looked quite relieved before he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me into his warm embrace. It never failed to amaze me how safe and secure I felt when he held me in his arms. Prince Leonard stroked my back gently and slowly until I found myself relaxing completely in his arms. Slowly, I wrapped my arms around his back and pressed the side of my face against his chest so that I could hear the strong sound of his heartbeat. We held each other in silence as if seeking comfort from one another. My journey with the prince had been an enjoyable one filled with love and adventures, but it was also filled with obstacles. Thanks to them, the bond that I had built with the prince only grew stronger with each passing day as we navigated the tides together.
"Mila," the prince called my name as he unwrapped his arms from around my body. Our bodies parted just enough for us to see each other’s faces. I could tell by the look that the prince had on his face that there was something more that he wanted to tell me.
