Chapter 403: The Baby’s Arrival

"What else is there to report?" the prince asked without beating around the bush. I could see that he could read the butler’s expression as well.

"The King has called for Your Highness and Lady Mila to join him in a meeting. He will make the announcement there," the butler informed the prince before bowing respectfully.

We rushed over to meet with the King right after hearing the news from the butler. I was nervous to be in the presence of the king, but I was even more curious to hear news about Regina’s delivery. When we arrived, I wasn’t surprised to see Prince Darius as well. Unlike the last time that I was here in this room after being summoned, Selena wasn’t with the prince. Being in that room again brought back memories of the first time that I found out that Selena was pregnant, and along with it came a wave of sorrow when I thought of what could have been. If Selena hadn’t lost her baby that day, she would have given birth around this time as well. I shook my head slightly from side to side to clear my thoughts because I knew that dwelling on the unchangeable past wasn’t healthy. We took our seats as we waited for the king to arrive.

"Have you heard anything?" Prince Leonard asked his brother.

"Not at all," Prince Darius replied casually.

It seems like the important news had to be broken in person, and I thought that made sense...

We didn’t wait for long before the King arrived. To my surprise, he was accompanied by the grand duchess and Prince Florian, who I had thought would be spending time at the hospital with Regina and their baby. The king had an unreadable expression on his face, but I could tell from the looks on both the Duchess’s and Prince Florian’s faces that there would be some disturbing news. After taking their seats, the king heaved a loud sigh before raising a hand to massage his temples. If I had to describe the emotion that I sensed coming from the king, I would guess that he was frustrated with a great mix of disappointment.

"I guess you have summoned us here to break the news about the arrival of your first grandchild?" Prince Leonard was the first one to speak up.

Instead of replying to his son, the king let out another sigh. The Duchess immediately looked uncomfortable in her seat before she decided to open her mouth and give Prince Leonard a reply to his question.

"Regina has given birth safely. Both mother and child are healthy, and they are currently resting at the hospital," the Duchess delivered the news that brought relief to my chest.

It was as if I could breathe normally again, and I was thankful that everything seemed to be going fine. At least, that was the way that I saw it; however, the king’s reaction told me that he clearly thought otherwise. It looked like he wasn’t pleased at all with the arrival of his first grandchild after such a long wait, and I couldn’t understand why.

"What’s wrong, father?" Prince Darius asked directly this time.

The king sucked in a deep breath before staring at his two sons in silence. After a moment of uncomfortable silence, the king heaved his third sigh ever since arriving in the room.

"It’s a girl," the king announced dispassionately before drifting off into silence.

It’s a girl...

Everybody was stunned into silence. At first, I couldn’t quite wrap my head around the heavy atmosphere that hung in the room. It took me a couple of seconds to fully process that the reason behind the king’s depression was the fact that the baby had been born a girl, and therefore, she couldn’t be an ultimate alpha. To be an ultimate alpha, the gender of the baby must be male. There had been so much discussion and speculation about whether or not the baby would turn out to be an ultimate alpha that I had completely forgotten that there was also the possibility that the baby could be born a girl.

The one who had the loudest and last laugh in the matter was none other than Duchess Flavia, who was never in favor of her son becoming the next king. In fact, she laughed so loudly for such a long period of time that it brought tears to her eyes. I watched as she laughed as if she could not stop when she recalled hearing the news that Regina had given birth to a healthy little baby girl.

"Honestly, I have to admit that I was worried that the baby would turn out to be an ultimate Alpha. It never occurred to me that the baby could turn out to be a girl, and that would be the end of my problems," she said before letting out a hysterical laugh.

I wondered if she would get into some kind of trouble if the king saw her reacting this way to the news, and then I realized that perhaps even the king could not punish a free spirit like her.

"Now it’s your turn," she said as she looked directly at me.

"My turn?" I asked as if I didn’t know what she was talking about.

"Of course, now that the two princes and their partners have failed spectacularly, it’s your time to shine," she said before reaching out a hand toward my face. I was forced to look directly at her smiling face as she took hold of my chin between her fingertips ever so gently.

"I don’t know about that. My three-month grace period is coming to an end very soon," I replied in a small voice as I tried to control my emotions.

Despite the King’s and the Committee’s apparent disappointment that the newborn baby was a girl, a party was hosted to celebrate her arrival. I thought that it was only right that the brand new princess would receive a warm welcome. Honestly, I truly despised the fact that everyone seemed to shun the princess, although she was also a precious addition to the Royal Family. Prince Leonard seemed excited enough in his own way about the arrival of his niece and we had a very extensive discussion on the present that we wanted to give to her.
