The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid
Chapter 386: Forever Gone

Chapter 386: Forever Gone

I reached for Jessie’s hand and held it as we sat side by side outside the clinic while we waited for news about Selena’s condition. I wasn’t sure if her hand was trembling in mine or if my hand was the one that was trembling. We sat together in silence as time seemed to crawl by.

In the end, Jessie and I were informed by one of the nurses that we were not allowed to visit Selena. When I asked her about Selena’s condition, all the nurse would say was that she needed time to rest to recover. I returned to Prince Leonard’s palace with a heavy heart and spent a sleepless night worrying about Selena.

“You should eat some food or else you’re going to be joining your friend at the clinic,” Prince Leonard said quite sternly as he stared directly at me from across the dining table.

He must have realized how I haven’t touched any of the food since our meal started. It felt wrong for me to eat when I knew that Selena was going through such a tough time. On top of that, I had completely lost all of my appetite and food was the last thing on my mind.

“I’m sorry. I’m just so worried,” I confessed honestly before pursing my lips tightly into a thin line.

As expected, I had heard no news or any update regarding Selena’s condition all throughout the night. I hoped that the lack of news might mean good news and that Selena was fine.

“I want to visit her,” I told the prince honestly before I hesitated.

I wasn’t sure if I would be allowed to see her even if I went to the clinic and then there was the risk that I might be getting in the doctor’s way of treating Selena which would just make everything worse.

“If you would like, I can call to ask about your friend’s condition for you,” the prince suggested after letting out a sigh.

“Thank you so much. I would really appreciate that,” I said in a small voice.

I watched as Prince Leonard took out his phone before pressing it to the side of his handsome face.

“Mila is worried about friend’s condition, so I was wondering if we could pay her a visit,” Prince Leonard spoke through the phone.

After a brief conversation, the prince hung up before he nodded his head slightly my way.

“Is she okay?” I asked as I felt my chest tightened.

To my question, the prince only nodded his head before telling me that I could visit her if I wanted to.

“Yes, I really want to see her. If it’s okay with you, I would like to go now,” I said as I stood up from my seat.

“I’ll go with you,” Prince Leonard said as he also stood up from his seat.

I honestly felt quite relieved when I heard from the prince that Selena was fine. It felt that I could breathe easier now that my worst fear seemed to have been for naught. At least, that was supposed to be the case.

...

“You can come in to see her now, but please don’t visit her for too long. She still needs to rest,” the nurse informed us without going into any details.

Jessie and I both rushed into the clinic to see Selena. When we arrived at the clinic, Jesse was already there ahead of us. We entered Selena’s room together to find that she was alone on a hospital bed.

“Selena, are you okay? I’m so worried about you,” I said as I quickly approached the side of her bed.

Jessie was right by my side while Prince Leonard decided to give us some space and stood to the side of the room. Despite my question, I could tell from the lack of color in her face that Selena wasn’t feeling quite well. On top of that, I couldn’t ignore how swollen her eyes were, and I wondered if she had been crying for an extensive period of time.

Although she seemed pretty upset, she looked much better than when I last saw her and that was probably because she was no longer in intense pain. At least that was what I thought until she lifted her face and looked straight at me. Her eyes were bloodshot and I could see the tears swimming in her eyes while at the same time I could feel her sorrow.

“Selena...” I whispered my name because I was at a total loss for words.

I knew right away that something had gone terribly wrong.

How could this be possible? Prince Leonard clearly told me that she was fine.

I wanted to ask her what had happened but I just couldn’t find the words. It felt like whatever I said at that moment would only make her feel even worse than before. Selena suddenly burst out into tears before saving me the effort of coming up with the right words.

“My baby...”she whimpered in a broken voice as she cradled her belly with her arms.

“Oh no...” Jessie murmured when we both understood her unspoken message.

I didn’t want to believe what I was hearing and seeing or the fact that Selena had lost her baby. She was clearly in shock and not dealing with the reality of losing her unborn baby very well. Jessie and I hugged her to give her some comfort although we probably both knew that nothing would ever be enough to compensate for what she had lost. Selena wasn’t that far along in her pregnancy when she suddenly lost her baby. If what the doctors had told me before was accurate, then I guess this wasn’t an uncommon occurrence. Selena’s body must have been incompatible with carrying the prince’s child and that led to her experiencing a miscarriage.

I wondered if she would have been this shocked had she been told about the risks beforehand or if someone had bothered to explain to her what was really going on. Perhaps, if she had been told, she could have looked better after herself. So many ‘what ifs’ filled my mind and it inherently made me feel even more bitter about the situation.
