Chapter 296: Real Confession

“I didn’t trip or sprain my ankle...” I confessed before pursing my lips tightly together.

“Is that so?” he asked casually.

His lack of reaction to my confession of lying to him caught me off guard. The silent tension in the air made me feel uncomfortable and I started hoping that Prince Leonard would just shout at me instead of replying so calmly the way that he did.

The prince’s lack of reaction made me feel like we were having a regular conversation about random things without any key significance. Prince Leonard didn’t seem angry at all, and I hoped that that was how he genuinely felt.

“I’m very sorry for all of this. I made you come here without any good reason; I am so sorry...” I apologized as I felt tears threatening to spill from my eyes.

Not wanting the prince to see my tears, I quickly turned away while blinking rapidly to keep the tears at bay. Silence filled the room again and I began wondering if the prince would leave and that this would be the end of our unfortunate meeting. It didn’t take long for me to realize that the sinking feeling that I felt deep in my chest was regret. If I could turn back time, I would find a better way to get the prince’s attention so that he would spare some time to spend with me.

My dark thoughts only serve to make the world around me lose its sparkle. Just when everything seemed bleak and hopeless, I felt a slight pressure around my upper body and then I was being pulled a little to the side.

“Leo...” I whispered his name as my eyes widened.

His familiar sweet rosy scent filled my nostrils along with the warmth from his embrace as the prince wrapped his arms around me and gently pulled me closer to him. My heart jumped dangerously in my chest when it finally hit me that the prince was hugging me. Nothing about his reaction made any sense but I couldn’t help enjoying the feel of being held by him.

“Good job, Mila. You did so well...” he whispered into my ear as his beautiful fingers began stroking my hair.

“I did...well?” I repeated his words in pure confusion.

I tipped my head back to take a look up at his face and that was when our eyes met. Instead of a look of anger or an intense gaze, the prince’s blue eyes felt as clear as the cloudless blue sky as he smiled a little down at me. It was such a captivating sight that made me stare without daring to blink in case I might miss any small details of his attractive eyes and facial features. Although just a moment ago, my world seemed so dark and desolated, it felt like the sun had finally shone on my life again.

“Yes, I think you did very well...” the prince repeated his compliment as his arms tightened slightly to hold me firmer against his body.

His words of compliments were the complete opposite of what I had expected from him. The way that he was treating me so gently and caringly also added to my surmounting sense of confusion.

Why is he complimenting me? Why isn’t he angry?

“You’re not angry?” I asked blankly.

“Should I be?” he replied with a grin.

“Well, I guess...you should be...” I admitted although that was the last thing that I wanted him to feel toward me.

“Why is that?” he asked as if he didn’t already know the answer.

I felt like a child being reprimanded in the gentlest of ways. The prince was so kind that it made my guilt feel almost unbearable. He was really going to make me spell it out for him and that was probably part of my punishment. Compared to what I thought I would have to face, this felt like nothing at all.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to lie to you...” I replied without making any excuses for myself.

“Lying isn’t a good thing, don’t you agree?” he asked before patting the top of my head softly a few times.

“I’m sorry. I know that I shouldn’t have done that...” I apologized again.

“Don’t worry about it too much. I’m not angry if that’s what you’re so scared of,” he replied as he hugged me a little tighter.

“...Really?” I couldn’t stop myself from asking with so much hope in my tone.

“Really. It was the duchess who put you up to this, wasn’t it?” the prince guessed very correctly.

The certain look that he had in his eyes told me that he probably knew this from the very beginning. My eyes widened in surprise before I realized that I didn’t need to say anything more. I just nodded my head once to confirm that what he thought was correct.

“Let’s just say that you are partly at fault for letting yourself being led astray so easily. Is that fair?” he suggested with a smile.

“It’s my fault. Please don’t blame the duchess,” I said defiantly.

Prince Leonard stared deeply into my eyes for a few seconds before he started to chuckle. He probably found everything so funny while I wanted to writhe in embarrassment.

“So, is there anything else that you would like to confess?” he asked before showing me a charming and very disarming smile.

“Umm...I didn’t mean to do that...I just...” I said hesitantly before struggling to finish my sentence.

“You just, what?” he asked mercilessly.

“I just...wanted to see you...” I confessed my real secret in a whisper.

“Then I guess your plan worked very well because here I am,” the prince replied.

The warm smile that he showed me told me that he wasn’t at all displeased by what I had done and perhaps it might just be the opposite. I wasn’t sure if I was just so blinded by his smile, and I might have just been too optimistic but that was what I wanted to believe.
