The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 295: Can’t be a Coward
Chapter 295: Can’t be a Coward
Time was quickly running out and with every step forward, the prince was taking me closer and closer to the doctor. If I wanted to tell him the truth, I had to do it now. That realization made me panic and I instinctively clenched my fists around his clothes. I could hear the prince’s regular heartbeat as I rested my face against his chest and closed my eyes to gather my wits together.
I can do this...
If I ran away from the truth, I would just be a coward. Although I may get lucky, and the prince may never discover the truth. However, in the event that he did, it would really be the worst if he didn’t hear it directly from me. This is my last chance to confess and tell Prince Leonard the truth.
“Prince Leonard...” I called his name softly.
“How many times do I need to tell you to call me Leo when we’re alone?” he replied before grinning down at me.
I could tell that he wasn’t truly mad but that didn’t mean that his mood had improved. By that time, I could somehow feel that the prince and Duchess Flavia weren’t exactly on great or friendly terms with each other.
“I can walk, really. So please, you can put me down,” I told him as I found myself stiffening in his arms.
“I don’t think so. Even if you say so, we shouldn’t risk it. It’s not that far anyways, I can carry you without a problem,” he brushed off my suggestion so easily.
“Umm...can we stop for a bit and talk?” I inquired.
The prince gave me a confused look that quickly turned into a look of pure concern. Regardless of my request, he did not show any intention of letting me down.
“Can we talk about it while the doctor tends to your ankle?” he asked calmly.
That would be too late...
“It’s actually quite important so if you please...” I replied before trailing off.
The prince’s blue eyes narrowed slightly at me as he seemed to get the seriousness of my request. He hesitated for a moment before letting out a soft sigh of resignation.
“I see...” the prince murmured softly.
Regardless of my protests, the prince never put me back down on my two feet. Instead, his arms around my body tightened slightly as he continued to carry me in his arms.
“Should I just take you to your room? I can call a doctor to tend to you there,” he suggested.
“Yes, that’s a great idea. Thank you...Leo...” I thanked him sweetly.
The way his beautiful lips curved up into a small smile whenever I called him by his nickname made my heart skip a beat. It always delighted me whenever I could do something to please him. Compared to other things, calling him by his nickname was probably one of the easier tasks; however, I still found it quite embarrassing to do although we were alone.
It wasn’t a long walk back to my room and it felt like I didn’t have enough time to string my words together into a confession that would sound truthful yet excusable. I might have been too optimistic to call lying to the prince an excusable thing, but I hoped that he would be forgiving and understanding. We arrived at my room way too fast for my liking.
“Careful, Mila...” Prince Leonard warned me in a tone so gentle that I felt a fluttering feeling in my chest.
As careful as his words were, he seated me on the sofa before sitting down right next to me. Now that his hands were free, the prince quickly reached for his mobile phone.
“Please wait!” I called out much louder than I had intended as my hand reached out to stop his.
I knew that he was going to call for a doctor and I knew better than anyone that a doctor’s assistance wasn’t required. Prince Leonard cocked his head slightly to the side as he looked at me with a look of confusion. I wasn’t at all surprised by his reaction because to him, I must have reacted very strangely.
“Can we talk...alone for a bit?” I asked in a small voice.
I shifted my weight slightly on the sofa as my hands fidgeted and clenched together on my lap as my heart thumped uncomfortably hard in my chest. Confessing my wrongdoings to the prince turned out to be something much more challenging than I had anticipated and I wasn’t sure how to even start the conversation with him.
“Sure...” the prince replied casually.
The silence between us must have lasted only for a handful of seconds but it seemed like hours had passed since I had started fidgeting in my seat. Now that it was time to confess my mistakes, I was faced with the fact that I was out of my mind scared of how the prince would react.
What am I going to do if he gets angry and doesn’t forgive me?
At that moment, the temptation to keep the lie going felt so overwhelming. Running away from the truth and the hard conversation that needed to take place seemed like the best and easiest option. However, each time that my gaze shifted to the prince’s slightly worried face, I just couldn’t bring myself to lie to him any longer.
“Prince Leonard...I mean...Leo...I have something to tell you,” I said while making sure to correct myself.
“What is it, Mila?” he asked while sounding very patient.
“The truth is...there was no accident...” I murmured softly.
There were times like these when I was thankful for the prince’s superior sense of hearing. No matter how softly I spoke because of the weight of my guilt or my shyness, he was able to hear me.
“What do you mean?” the prince prompted for further details.
To my surprise, he did not seem at all shocked by my confession. Something told me that he understood what I was saying but he wasn’t reacting to it. Although I was frightened to go on, I quickly gathered my words before I would lose the courage that I had summoned.
