The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 200: Change
Chapter 200: Change
“How did it start?” I asked as I waited eagerly for the prince’s response.
“I love how you’re really interested in this...” he said before he chuckled.
He had no idea just how much more I was interested in him than the topic that he was teaching me. I smiled at him as I continued watching him from where I was seated.
“I love how you love that fact that I’m interested...” I replied before my smile widened.
The prince just laughed at my words and my heart danced around rapidly in my chest as I enjoyed the warmth that seemed to course through my body at the sound of his delighted laugh. I still found it unusual how his words and everything that he did could have a direct effect on my body the way that it did although he was sitting so far away, and we were not touching.
“Long ago, after the first king established the kingdom by assembling the strongest Alphas there was undoubtedly many wars and battles going on. There are records that the kingdom started providing the services of knights and soldiers. To put it in simple terms, the provision of arms probably started all the way back then in the forms of soldiers for hire. Anyone from within or outside of the kingdom could pay to hire knights, soldiers, or even armies to fight on their behalf or to serve as protection. That was how this all started,” the prince revealed while trying to keep his story simply for my sake.
“I see...” I murmured.
“The fighting probably never stopped, and business probably continued to expand endlessly. Strong Alpha wolves were well-known for being strong and a male werewolf could easily take down a small army of soldiers. Running a business of renting out werewolves back then must have been a very lucrative business,” Prince Leonard said with an impressed look on his face.
The first king was surely a good businessman in that sense. I could see how a large and strong creature such as a werewolf would be highly desirable in times of war. However, it made me feel more than a little sad that they had to be used as weapons and tools of war.
“Were the werewolves forced by the king to fight?” I asked in a small voice.
“No one knows. Maybe they were willing. Maybe they were not. Maybe some were while some were not...” the prince replied with a shrug of his shoulders.
I nodded my head to show him that I understood. I guessed no one really knew how those werewolves felt back then.
“What happened back then was probably considered normal given the context of that time. Wolves fighting to serve and protect their pack is absolutely normal. Working for the sake of the pack is also to be expected. Because of this, I can understand why it was so important back then for the kingdom to raise as many Ultimate Alphas as possible. After all, only Ultimate Alphas can properly transform into large wolves or large werewolves that are required for combat,” the prince continued on as his voice also got sterner than before.
“Things are very different now...” I whispered softly but I knew that he could hear me with ease.
“You’re right. As time went by, many things started to change and so did the way that wars are fought. The kingdom adapted as well. Instead of sending werewolves to fight in the frontlines like before, the country changed to manufacturing weapons and selling that instead. That is also why I honestly don’t see why the king and everyone else is so crazy about producing Ultimate Alphas these days...” the prince said before heaving a frustrated sigh.
I could feel his frustration as if his emotions were my own, that was how vivid I could feel his emotions. I could also understand why the current standing of things didn’t seem to make sense to him; however, I was surprised that he was so affected by it. I waited patiently and in silence for the prince to continue on with what he wanted to say.
“Alphas don’t get sent to fight in the frontlines simply for their advanced physical abilities anymore. There are more than enough machines, drones, and other weapons to do the job. If you ask me, there is absolutely no need for such creatures to even exist in this world anymore. Yet, my father and many of his ministers are ever obsessed with producing more of us...” Prince Leonard complained with open dissatisfaction.
I could feel that to him this issue mattered more than just trade and warfare. For a moment, it felt like he truly despised the idea that Ultimate Alphas still existed.
“Prince Leonard...” I murmured his name a little sadly.
“Sorry, I guess that turned depressing very fast...” he said before he tried his best to smile my way.
“Not at all. Thank you for teaching me all this and thank you for letting me know what you think about all this...” I thanked him with all my heart.
I didn’t want to hear more about this topic, and it seemed like we have both had enough of it for at least one day. The way this topic had started to disturb the prince also started to make me feel on edge. I didn’t like seeing the prince looking so distressed.
“Time will change things and how things are done just like it has already changed many things in the past. I am sure that one day, these old customs will also fade away...” I said in an attempt to comfort Prince Leonard.
“Either we wait for change or we bring about the change ourselves...” the prince muttered as if speaking to himself.
“Are you hungry?” I asked abruptly.
“What?” he asked with an unveiled look of surprise on his face.
I knew that he must have heard what I had just said and so that meant that he didn’t quite want to believe in what he had just heard. I ended up giggling at his reaction to my seemingly random question.
