The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 198: A Distance Apart
Chapter 198: A Distance Apart
“He just asked if I was doing fine. He also asked about our lessons...” I replied.
“What did you tell him?” the prince asked.
“That everything is going fine and that he didn’t need to worry about me,” I replied.
Of course, I didn’t tell him what really happened the first time that Prince Leonard and I tried to have a proper lesson together. In fact, I would never tell a soul about that even if pressed to do so. Prince Leonard didn’t seem satisfied with the answers that I gave him; however, he decided not to press me any further.
‘Today we will be studying something about this country’s economy...’
My eyes widened when I realized that he had spoken inside of my head. This wasn’t the first time that he managed to invade my thoughts so easily, but I was far from accustomed to suddenly having our minds connect like that.
‘Ok...’
‘Are you surprised? Isn’t this ability just convenient? It seems like the effect still lasted since our lesson yesterday...’
The prince sounded pleased and I found myself blushing as I recalled what was required for us to start and maintain this connection that we had. I had to say that it was much better this way than having to yell to get my voice across.
‘Why are we sitting so far apart from each other?’ I asked before I could stop myself.
Not having to speak made words slip out of me so much easier than before. I just had to think it in my mind and I would be saying those words to him. I knew that I had to be careful before putting my thoughts into words because if I did that, it would be like revealing everything that I was thinking to the prince.
‘Do you want to sit close to me?’ he asked as he stared at me from across the room.
If I had to be honest, then the answer would be a bold ‘yes’. It wasn’t just strange for us to be sitting so far apart when we were supposed to be studying together. The way my heart raced in my chest just when I laid eyes on him told me that there was something more. I sucked in a deep breath before letting it out slowly to calm myself. What the prince said about me wanting him every time that I see his face couldn’t possibly be true.
It just can’t be...
‘No...I don’t...’ I replied.
‘We will sit this way for the time being,’ he concluded.
I nodded my head in acknowledgement and acceptance of what he had decided. The prince was sitting a few meters away from me but when I looked at him, I could feel our eyes making contact and locking with each other. Something in the back of my mind told me that this lesson might turn out as unexpected as the last.
‘Let’s start. Do you know anything about the economy of this country?’ he asked.
‘No, not really...’ I replied honestly.
‘I think what is most important for you to learn about a country’s economy is where the country makes its money. How do people make a living? What sectors dominate the economy? What products are produced locally and exported versus those that are imported from other countries...’ the prince began.
I could tell by his tone of voice that he was quite passionate about this topic and that made me more eager to learn about it. Although he hadn’t said a word, it felt like he was really talking to me. It excited me to be able to learn more about the prince’s kingdom. In a way, it felt like a roundabout way of learning more about him as a person.
‘Do you know what our economy is mostly based on?’ he asked as his eyes stared at me from across the room.
‘No...I just know that this country is very wealthy,’ I replied before smiling a little his way.
‘Arms. We trade arms,’ he announced without sounding particularly proud.
‘Arms?’ I mumbled questioningly.
‘Correct. This country’s economy is mostly based on selling arms to other countries. That is our biggest export...’ the prince confirmed.
I must have had a very confused look on my face because the prince went on to further explain what exactly was included in the terms ‘arms’ that the country seemed to produce and trade.
‘We trade everything that other countries may want or need for national security or even for war. Guns, bullets, fighter jets, tanks, and other related technologies. Our country is actually very famous for what we do,’ the prince said with a nod of his head.
‘I see...’ I murmured inside my head.
I had to say that I wasn’t sure how to react to this new piece of information. I just never thought that the reason this kingdom was so wealthy was because they sold arms to other nation. I was sure that there was nothing wrong with it; however, weapons are used to hurt and kill people, right?
‘You don’t seem impressed. Are you scared?’ he asked before his lips curved into a teasing smile.
My heart clenched in my chest just at the sight of his beautiful and alluring smile. For a moment, I no longer cared how the country and its people made their money or their living. As long as they had money and were living happily, then why did it mattered whether or not the money came from them trading arms. All I wanted to do was watch the prince smile from across the room.
Mila, you need to focus...
It was easier said than done and I was forced to admit that my attention was slowly but surely getting sucked and absorbed by the prince. I couldn’t believe that this was happening even though he was sitting so far away from me. I gasped when it hit me that Prince Leonard had probably chosen to distance himself from me literally to help me focus on my lesson.
I truly appreciated his efforts and I wanted to tell him that it was working; however, I had a feeling that being far away from him while he was still somewhat within reach was having the complete opposite on me from what he may have envisioned.
