Chapter 196: Request for Help

“Salena. My name is Salena,” Salena introduced herself in a voice that was slightly more audible than a whisper.

“Mila must be happy to have you two with her. It can get lonely for honorable maidens living in the Secret Chambers, or so I’ve heard. Mila will be busy with her lessons and I’m sure that many things will be expected of her. Dealing with my brother and his selfish demands isn’t going to be easy either. I guess I’m relieved that Mila will have the support from both of you,” Darius said warmly.

“We will try our best, Your Highness,” Jessie said with enthusiasm.

“She doesn’t talk much, does she?” Darius asked as he turned his attention to Salena again.

“I apologize for her. Salena isn’t very talkative, I’m afraid...” Jessie quickly apologized while Salena only stared back at the prince.

“Jessie, can you relay my message to Madame Sand?” Darius asked.

“Of course, Your Highness,” Jessie replied instantly.

“Please tell her that I send my regards,” he instructed.

“Is that...all?” Jessie asked with raised eyebrows.

“Yes, that would be all...” Darius replied before showing her a kind smile.

Jessie turned to glance at Salena who was still clutching at Jessie’s skirt in her anxiousness. With a regretful smile, Jessie slowly pulled Salena’s hand away from her uniform before showing her a reassuring nod. Salena’s lower lip quivered as she watched her friend walk away to deliver the very brief message from the prince to Madame Sand.

“Salena...” Darius called her name as he watched the very nervous girl fidgeting on her feet right in front of him.

“Y-Yes?” she replied with widened eyes.

Darius had no idea why the girl seemed so scared in his presence, but he did find her reaction extremely amusing. He wondered if she was usually this nervous in front of other people as well but that didn’t matter to him. His grey eyes took in the panicked face of the girl of a few words and his lips curved into a smile. As far as he was concerned the fact that she wasn’t the talkative type made her exactly the person that he was looking for.

“I need you to help me with something,” Darius said before he smiled at her.

“M-Me?” Salena replied as her voice continued to shake.

“Can you come with me for a bit?” Darius asked invitingly before he flashed her another charming smile.

Before Salena could say anything, Darius had already turned and began walking away. It didn’t seem like she had a choice but to follow after the prince. Her heart raced in her chest, and she felt so flustered. She had no idea why the prince wanted to talk to her or what he could possibly want her to help him out with. Regardless of how nervous she felt, she obediently followed after Prince Darius while keeping some distance between them.

Darius led her to an unoccupied classroom that happened to be on the same floor as the room that they were in before. He opened the door and gestured with his hand for her to enter before him. Salena bit down on her lower lip to stop it from trembling along with the rest of her body as she hurriedly walked into the room.

“Are you always this nervous around people?” Darius asked curiously after closing the door to the classroom behind him.

“Yes...I mean...no...” Salena replied without meeting the prince’s gaze.

Darius ended up laughing at her flustered response and that only made Salena blush a deeper shade of red. Although she felt shy, she couldn’t stop staring at the prince and admiring the way his facial expression softened as he laughed.

“I need your help,” Prince Darius said after he had managed to control his laughter.

“How may I be of use to you?” Salena asked in a small voice.

“There’s no need to be so formal. What I need you to help me with is actually very simple. I want you to watch over someone and report to me about that person,” Darius said before his lips curved into a smile again.

“Watch over someone...” Salena murmured as she raised her brows questioningly.

“That’s right. All you have to do is keep your eyes on that person and report to me regularly,” Darius repeated.

“Who...do you want me to keep my eyes on?” Salena asked in wonder.

“Mila,” Darius replied immediately.

“Mila?” Salena exclaimed questioningly.

“That’s right. You’re her friend and personal maid, right? There isn’t anyone more perfect for this job than you. Can you help me out?” Darius asked.

“I...” Salena murmured as she hesitated.

It wasn’t like she could directly refuse to carry an order from a prince; however, she wasn’t sure what exactly she had to do and why Darius was so interested in knowing what Mila was up to. She chewed on her lower lip as her eyes darted all over the place as she tired her best to come up with a way to deal with this situation while not offending the prince.

“I’m not asking you to change anything. All you have to do is report to me about what Mila does each day. Where does she go and who does she meet with. If there’s anything that she tells you that you think could be important, you should also let me know,” Darius explained.

“Umm...may I know what is the reason for this?” Salena asked while wondering if she would lose her head.

“Hmm...let’s just say that Mila is a very important person now and it is my duty to make sure that she does well. Don’t worry, what you’re doing won’t put your friend in harm’s way. On the contrary, you’ll be helping her because if anything is amiss, I will definitely help her,” Darius replied convincingly.

“I...” Salena murmured as she continued to hesitate.

“What would you want for your reward? I’m not a big fan of receiving help for free. If there’s anything that you desire...” Darius asked before trailing off.
