The Alpha Prince's Purchased Maid -
Chapter 137: Strategic Manipulation
Chapter 137: Strategic Manipulation
His words kept me hanging and I couldn’t stop thinking about what the prince was about to say just now. A short while later, we arrived at the wall that separated the palace from the outside world. My heart began beating faster and faster in my chest. The light from the guard station at the gate poured into the car. There were so many guards at the gate and all of them saluted after recognizing the prince’s car.
It seemed like everything was progressing smoothly and one of the guards was about to open the gates for us when a very large man stepped out into view.
“Of all the days...” the prince murmured before he scoffed.
The large man approached the prince’s side of the car bent down until his face was level with the car’s window. I gulped from nervousness as Prince Leonard opened the car’s window. My body stiffened but I was too scared to even look at the large man.
“Where are you going, Prince Leonard?” a deep voice asked.
“Out,” the prince replied without providing any details.
“Who is with you?” the large man asked.
Just like the prince had ordered me before, I kept silent and let the prince do all the talking to handle the situation.
“She’s a woman that I need to send back,” the prince replied casually.
“Where does she live? I can get one of my men to send her back for you,” the man replied.
“There’s no need,” the prince calmly refused the man’s offer.
“Prince Leonard, we are under strict orders to keep honorable maidens in the palace walls. I believe that you are aware of this...” the man said coldly.
My body stiffened at his words. I have not heard of that although I sort of knew that honorable maidens were not allowed to leave the Sacred Chambers unless we got permission.
“There’s also another strict rule that had just been put in place in case that you’ve forgotten. We’re no longer allowed to bring in women from the outside,” the prince said sternly.
“Is she from the outside?” the man asked.
“Please keep your voice down. I don’t want my brother to get into trouble for this after I’ve agreed to help him out,” Prince Leonard said in a hushed tone.
“Is it Prince Florian again?” the man asked softly followed by a long sigh.
“As you probably already know, my relationship with my younger brother has been a little tricky for a while now. Surely, you’ll allow me to act like a helpful elder brother to him just this once...” the prince said.
The man was silent as if he was thinking the prince’s words over in his head. After a short while, the man heaved a louder sigh this time before he finally replied.
“Please have a good evening, Prince Leonard,” the man said politely.
“Thank you. You should take your rest. I don’t expect to see you here when I return,” the prince replied in a slightly teasing tone.
The strain in the atmosphere made the air feel so heavy and I didn’t dare to take in a deep breath or make a noise. My body felt frozen until the car’s window closed and the car started moving again. The gates parted for us before Prince Leonard drove us out of the palace grounds. I didn’t even dare glance back in fear that someone had decided to follow us to drag us back.
“You don’t need to panic. He won’t come after us,” the prince said as if he could read my thoughts.
“Who was that?” I asked the first question that came to mind.
It seemed like running into that large man proved to be quite troublesome. He was probably someone that the prince dreaded seeing too. Luck clearly wasn’t on our side when our car was stopped by him, and the prince was even questioned.
“Loid, he’s the head of the palace guards. All guards ultimately report to him regardless of which palace they happen to serve,” the prince explained without looking my way.
“I see. He’s...scary...” I mumbled as if talking to myself.
“He can be really scary. He also reports directly to the king. Usually, he doesn’t spend his nights out guarding the gates like that but sometimes he likes to over work himself...” the prince said with clear sarcasm.
“Will we get in trouble if he reports to the king?” I asked.
“Maybe but he won’t do that,” the prince said with confidence.
“Why are you so sure?” I asked before I could stop myself.
“He wouldn’t want to ruin a chance of improving the relationship between Florian and me,” the prince replied before he turned to smile a little my way.
I didn’t have a lot of understanding about politics and what exactly was going on between the three brothers, but I could tell from my past observations that Prince Leonard didn’t seem to get along with Prince Florian. If I was someone as loyal to the royal family as Loid seemed to be then I guess it would be normal that I would want the princes to get along with each other. I wasn’t all too sure about that but what was clear to me more than ever was the fact that Prince Leonard is a very calculating and manipulative person.
“You shouldn’t have lied to him...” I murmured under my breath.
“Wolves have a superior hearing when compared to humans. I can practically hear everything that you just said...” he said before he grinned at me.
Shit. I guess it’s really true that he’s a wolf.
If he can hear me when I speak that softly then I should keep my thoughts to myself instead of even whispering them. Now that I thought about it, I didn’t know the extent to which our minds could connect.
“Prince Leonard...” I called his name to get his attention.
“Yes?” he replied immediately.
“Can you...read my mind?” I asked while knowing that my question must have sounded very random.
“I can tell what you’re thinking most of the time. What you think pretty much shows on your face,” he replied bluntly.
