The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 914: MENTAL WARFARE
Chapter 914: MENTAL WARFARE
Cane managed to put the elders at arm length, they couldn’t pressure the alpha to make Iris allowed Rei to stand up and after more than three weeks had passed, their condition became worst.
Even though elder Xarex fed them, but in their position, they couldn’t have a comfortable rest and it started to take a toll on them, especially elder Dandolf, who were the oldest among them all, if you didn’t count the abnormal age that Rei had.
Iris had never visited them, therefore, she didn’t see their current condition or else, she would have folded, her tender heart wouldn’t be able to take such pitiful sight.
"In this rate, we are going to die first before she came," elder Dandolf said, he looked haggard. His face had turned very pale. He was no longer be able to feel his legs, so did the rest of them. "We are going to become cripple."
Rei stared at the sky, this was out of his expectation. He didn’t think Iris would let them stayed like this for long, especially when Lou’s condition didn’t get better. He expected Iris would have come to him and ask for help long ago, but then he miscalculated Cane’s involvement.
The alpha was very ruthless and he could see through his scheme. Damn it.
"How long do you want to do this?" Elder Rose asked. Their mind was very tired, they didn’t even realize that Elder Rose came approaching them. "We are going to leave for Golden Light pack. Are you sure, you are going to continue doing this?"
Rei lifted his head, his green eyes filled with rage, which made Elder Rose took a step back. She hated this man, but his strong presence and his intimidating look was undeniable.
"You don’t need to give me that look." Elder Rose didn’t look like she was in a good shape too. She had been trying to reach out to Abby, but that girl didn’t want to see her at all and she couldn’t go through the warriors. Elder Xarex kept pressuring her about this matter too. "I came here only to inform you this, so you will not waste more time."
"Have she heard about this?"
"I am sure she heard about you, but from the look of it, she really didn’t care."
"What about that magic user?"
"From what I heard, they are still trying to heal him. I am not sure about the progress," Elder Rose replied. She hated him, but she had an obligation to respect him at the same time and this torn her apart. "What are you going to do with this? We are leaving in three hours."
Rei stared at the bright sky out there. Three hours from now, it meant they were going to Golden Light pack at evening.
The reason why Cane insisted for them to go at night was because Iris was having a heavy morning sickness, even with the concoction from Grace, it only alleviated her pain a little bit and Iris insisted she didn’t want to drink too much medicine, in fear it would hurt her babies.
She remembered that she was not allowed to breastfeed her daughter when she was drinking her medicine. Therefore, she chose to endure it and there was no amount of persuasion from Cane and Grace that could change her mind.
It seemed that moment etched at the core of her memories.
In that case, Cane could only do this for his pregnant mate and made this journey easier for her.
"How is your feeling?" Cane asked, nuzzled her cheek. He helped her to get into the carriage, while the sun was almost set and the hue light of red fell on Iris’s face. She looked ethereal and Cane was fascinated by what he was seeing.
Probably because of her pregnancy, or maybe because all this time Cane had not yet seen her enough, but he felt this strong attraction toward his mate.
"I am good," Iris said, she smiled sleepily. She slept most of the time now, at night, she would ask Cane to rub her back, because she felt stiff, until she fell asleep but she would wake up in the morning and threw up because of her morning sickness.
In her previous pregnancy, her morning sickness was not this strong, therefore it was quite tiring for her.
"Go inside, I will come back shortly. I am going to take care of something." Cane kissed her lips, nibbling on her lower lip a little bit longer before he let go. "Stay with her."
"Yes, alpha."
Cane didn’t need to tell them about this, but he only wanted to make sure his mate was in safe hands.
However, not too far from the carriage, Ethan came rushing toward Cane. From the look of it, this was not a good news.
"One of the men died."
"What man?"
"That the man from the pure faction, who has been kneeling down with Rei."
Cane was silent for a while. "That has nothing to do with us."
"Yes, but..."
Ethan had not yet finished his words when they heard this loud sound from elder Xarex, demanding to meet with Cane and Iris.
Cedric’s existence was still unknown for the Holy Kingdom and now, he blended with the other warriors and most of the time, he would take care of Lou, since he was in the same room like him and now, he would ride the same carriage with the merchant too.
"What is it? We are going to leave now," Cane said with face that devoid from any emotions.
"How can you be very nonchalant?! One of my people died! A man had died because of your mate’s arrogancy!"
"My mate always stays away from your people, there is no way she can kill one of them. I can assure you that."
"Don’t play dumb! I know that you are behind it!" Elder Xarex narrowed his eyes. "Did it feel good knowing someone died because of you?!"
Cane smirked, but the look in his eyes turned very vicious when he spoke. "I have caused countless people died. If I lost my sleep over it, I would have died now." In the back of his mind, he was still thinking it was his responsibility for every death of his pack member during the slavery. "You are barking at the wrong tree." Cane folded his arms and glared down at the old man.
"One of my people died!" Elder Xarex couldn’t argue with Cane, he didn’t know what to say after hearing the alpha’s cold answer, thus he repeated the same thing.
"If you kept making a fuss, you can stay and take care of them." Cane walked away, waved his hand at elder Xarex. With the merchant and additional warrior from the Blue Moon pack and Celestial Moon pack, he would be able to manage to reach the capital city by the end of the month, if the remaining two packs in the west didn’t give them a hard time.
However, another report came even before Cane could enter his carriage. The other man died as well because of the exhaustion, which left Rei and elder Dandolf.
Cane didn’t seem surprised with this news. The two men didn’t hold an important role after all.
"We are leaving now!" Cane said, he then entered the carriage to find his mate was in deep thought. "What are you thinking?" He pinched her chin and lifted her head to look at her.
"This mental warfare makes me nervous," Iris answered truthfully. "Cane are you sure, he will not take things too far?"
"If he changed his game, maybe."
"Cane!" Iris was speechless.
"I am not going to let you beg him and give him a chance to take advantage of you," Cane said sternly. It had been so long, since he talked to her very seriously like this, which left Iris unable to retort.
She didn’t want to beg Rei either.
"What about Lou?"
"Is there a progress?"
Iris shook her head. She, Abby and Grace had been trying to figure a way how to heal Lou, but there were only two solutions; to get the roots of Heartthrob or Rei.
"I have contacted my man in Andelus Continent. He will find the plant and send it as soon as possible." Cane kissed her lips. "You don’t need to worry."
Iris didn’t use to this mental warfare between Cane and Rei, thus she was very nervous and she also knew to find the plant was not an easy task. This was Cane’s side plan, just in case Rei changed his tune again.
However, the moment Rei learned that Cane and Iris had left the pack with their long entourage, he stood up. His green eyes dripped with so much rage, even the knight, who delivered the news trembled in fear, as he lowered his head.
"They are leaving?!" Rei gritted his teeth. His legs were in so much pain, but Elder Dandolf took the brunt of it. He couldn’t stand!
Two knights had to help him and the healers needed to be called to check on his condition, but Rei didn’t look that weak, if anything, he looked even more alive than before.
"Call Rose and Xarex!" Rei roared and the knights scrambled to get the two elders. "I want them here now!"
He learned their people stayed as per elder Xarex’s order,
Meanwhile, ten days later, Cane’s entourage reached the Golden Light pack. This was the warrior pack. Most of the warriors from the palace came from this pack.
