The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 871: FEAR
Chapter 871: FEAR
Cane remembered very clearly the time Iris gave birth to their twin daughters, the smell of blood that was thick in the air, the warmth body of their dead little baby, how her lips had turned purple and they didn’t even have a chance to hear her crying. The heaviness in his arms when he had to carry their dead daughters. The moment she buried them.
Everything...
The emotions came flooding back and this time it hit Cane thousand folds harder, as he remembered how Iris had suffered through the lost of their babies. The emptiness in her eyes. The way she said she hated him. How much tears that she shed when she lost them. How they hearts were bleeding, the pain that they had never imagined. The anger, the cries, the loneliness and the helplessness...
Those feelings and moment still engraved in Cane’s mind and he would never forget it. There was no way he would be able to forget it.
How his sadness turned into anger. He was angry at everything, but mostly to himself.
"We can’t afford to have the baby now." Cane was firm with this decision. The moment Grace confirmed Iris’s pregnancy. He knew this would be a hard conversation he would have with her. But, Cane determined not to have them.
It broke him, but then they would break even more if something happened. Hope was a cruel thing and the price for it was too high.
"We are not in the situation to have the baby." Cane gritted his teeth. He rarely showed his emotions, but he was on the verge of having an outburst right now. His veins bulged, showing how much control he needed to keep talking with Iris calmly. "We need to let the baby go."
Iris was mortified. Among all the reaction she thought Cane would have, never once she imagined he would outright reject their babies. He literally said it to her face that he wanted her to get rid of their children. "No."
Instinctively, Iris placed her arms around her belly, as if she was protecting her babies.
"Why did you do that without consulting it with me? This is my body, you should know better to ask for my permission to do something to me!"
This must be the first time for Cane to raise his voice against her after they were being honest with their feelings and this startled her, which made Cane came to his sense and reign his anger the best he could. Still, he couldn’t.
"I am very angry with you, Iris," he said that through his gritted teeth. "We will talk about this later."
After saying that, Cane got off the carriage. He couldn’t stand Iris right now, most importantly, he needed space to think about the whole things thoroughly.
He was mad at himself for losing it, the sight of Iris when she startled at his outburst bothered him so much. He regretted for raising his voice and scared her, but didn’t for the context of what he said.
They really couldn’t afford a child right now!
Cane shifted into his beast after he told Aliana to bring the food to the carriage for Iris and then stormed off.
"What happened with him?" Ethan approached Aliana. He could see Cane was not in the right mood. "You said Cane has returned? Why he acted like a ferocious beast? Is there another soul inside him?"
Aliana noticed that too. The alpha was fine this morning, but what the cause of his sudden anger?
"I think something happened between him and the luna." Aliana best guess was the alpha was having an argumentation with the luna, because no one could affect him so much aside from his own mate.
"I am going with you," Ethan said. He took the tray from Aliana’s hands and carried it. The two of them went to the carriage. Aliana knocked, but there was no respond from inside. "Why don’t you open it? Cane is not inside, we will not get a shocking scenery."
Aliana rolled her eyes at his comment and then opened the door to the carriage only to find Iris was crying inconsolably.
"Luna? What happened?!" Aliana and Ethan immediately rushed inside and closed the door, so no one would hear them. "Why are you crying?"
Because the alpha was finally here, they thought it would be a great day, as they could breathe a sigh of relief, but why would Iris cry? Shouldn’t she be very happy? Even when she didn’t say it, people could tell how much she missed Cane.
"Aliana, what should I do?" Iris asked between her tears, she hugged Aliana tightly and cried. Cane’s rejection for their children hurt her so much. It felt like he hated her and their babies. "What should I do?"
She didn’t mean to be pregnant right now. She didn’t have the intention. She didn’t think it would work, even if it did, in her mind it would take months if it was not years for her to be able to heal him. By that time, she hoped everything would be more stable.
She understood why Cane didn’t want the baby to some extent, they were in the middle of a war and a lot of things could go wrong. No need for the additional babies on the way, they were already having a hard time to keep their life together, but she had never thought of how strong his reaction could be. The rejection was like a knife in her heart.
Aliana hugged her tightly, while Ethan patted her back, in hope this gesture could alleviate a little bit of her grievances. They didn’t know what the reason, but it must have something to do with the alpha.
"Aliana... what should I do?" Iris felt so bad because she made Cane very upset, but she felt even worst to think he didn’t want their babies. She saw them, she saw her babies, their wolf spirits had been with her for the past few weeks.
It almost felt like she already saw her baby even though she was not showing yet and for Cane to say they should get rid of them, it was simply too cruel. In Iris’s eyes, the babies were not something they talked about, as if they didn’t exist just because they had not yet seen the sign of their existence.
But for Iris it was different. She saw their presence. Her two little lights. It would kill her if she had to do something harmful to them.
"What happened, luna?" Aliana asked when Iris was slightly calm down. Ethan was still there with them too, he wanted to go and find Cane, but seeing how the alpha earlier, he didn’t think it would be a good idea.
"I am pregnant..." Iris said in small voice and the two of them were too stunned to speak.
"You... what?" Ethan was the first one to react. He blinked his eyes in disbelieve with what he heard. "How?" he shook his head, that question didn’t sound right. "I meant... as far as I know, you need Grace’s concoction..." They got their twins in that way after all and that was what Ethan had learned.
And Iris told them what she had told Cane about how she secretly tried to heal him. She didn’t think it would work, at least not in such short time.
"Wow... I am too speechless to speak..." Ethan’s jaw dropped. "I am curious now, is there anything you can’t heal?" The gamma was genuine with his question.
Before the water magic stone, Grace almost gave up, she even said the chance was very slight for Cane to father a child, but then a miracle happened.
"Now I wonder if it was really the water magic stone that helped you to get pregnant with the twin or it’s actually you, who had healed him and Grace’s concoction only helped you to gain more strength to do so. You often fell sick in the past after all," Ethan talked to no one in particular.
And this became their big question too.
"You are very powerful, luna," Aliana said, she agreed with Ethan.
"Cane didn’t want the babies..." Iris felt very bitter. She tried not to cry when she said that, but it was so painful to see the look on Cane’s eyes.
"He must be very shocked," Ethan said and then chose his words carefully. "You can say he had given up to be a father when you both lost the twins." Ethan caressed Iris’s head. "He was very scared of losing you again, Iris. Right now, with our current situation, something could go completely wrong and harm the baby. I don’t think he could handle even the thought of it."
Aliana nodded. She felt sad every time she remembered how the alpha stared at the door with emptiness in her eyes, where his dead daughter laid on her crib with cold body.
"The alpha was devastated when Chrystal was a stillborn and Rora’s death destroyed him completely." Aliana wiped tears from Iris’s eyes. "It’s only you, who kept his mind still sane and his heavy responsibility." Aliana smiled softly at the luna. "Don’t worry, the alpha will come around eventually."
"Right, just give him some time," Ethan chimed in.
Iris bit her lips, she glanced at her little lights. "I can see the babies’ wolf spirits..."
"Babies?" Ethan raised his brows, he just noticed it now. "Are you going to have twins again?!"
But, Cane didn’t come, even when the night fell.
