Chapter 734: NOT ENOUGH TIME TO GRIEVE (3)

Because Iris spent most of the time sleeping, since she was still recovering from traumatic birth experience, Grace suggested to alternate between giving the baby breast milk and her concoction, since they had to maintain the baby’s health, giving Rora only breast milk wouldn’t be enough.

Therefore, unless it was time for Iris to breastfeed her baby, Rora would be with Cane. She would sleep on her crib in his study room, under Cane’s watch. He would go every now and then to bring her to Iris and waked her up.

The alpha literally didn’t trust anyone to be near his daughter, if it was not an urgent matter that he had to leave Rora, he would be seen with the baby all the time and even if he had to leave, there would be Jace or Ethan by her side and a few more warriors nearby.

Aliana suggested for Cane to look for wet nurse, so they didn’t need to wake Iris up every time the baby needed to eat, but the alpha refused, because that’s not what his mate wanted. He wouldn’t go behind her back and did something she did not approve of.

With that, Aliana dropped the matter and stayed by Iris’s side all the time with Hanna too, she had not yet met with her missy, at least, not when she was awake, since she would be sleeping when she came over.

Meanwhile, Grace would follow the alpha and stay close with the baby, but occasionally she would check on Iris and make her concoction for both mother and daughter.

"Cane, I think you need to give an explanation for the people," Ethan said in low voice because he didn’t want to wake up the little one. All the warriors had to report everything to him and Jace and only the two of them were allowed to enter the study room to relay the message, while Cane writing a few replies for the secret message to his spies.

Cane dropped the quill and stared at Rora’s sleeping face. She didn’t make a fuss and was very calm. She had been sleeping for three hours now and like usually, Cane would come over to check on her, making sure she was breathing...

He felt like he was on edge every time he did this. He dreaded the moment if there was something wrong with her.

"People keep asking whether Iris gave birth to baby girls and if one of the babies didn’t make it, there are a lot of rumors circulated among people about the birth of your daughter, Cane. People wanted to believe the baby is boy." Ethan grimaced, he had tried his best to control the situation, but with everything that was going on, he and Jace simply had a lot on their plates to deal with these rumors.

After all, people gossiped all the time and even though it might look harmless at this moment, but if you let it slide, this problem would snowball out of control like the problem with Iris. The sentiment of people and their hatred toward her started like this and it went out of control.

No matter what, you couldn’t control what people think and what they felt, but you could redirect this matter before it was too late.

That was what Ethan meant and Cane was well aware of it.

"What about the funeral?" Cane asked, he picked up Rora from the crib when the baby woke up, she smacked her lips and opened her eyes for a second, before she closed them again and wriggled her body.

Cane placed the baby against his chest and rubbed her back gently, while she made noises. His focus was on his baby and all little thing she did, it mesmerized him, he felt like she was the center of his world.

Cane was barely sleeping and he was on edge every second of it, thinking something bad might happen to his little one and his mate, not to mention the pressure from the Holy Kingdom, they had been insinuating about the meeting to discuss about the black wisp, though they still held themselves back because of the mourning period, but after the funeral Cane didn’t think the Serafim would continue to be considerate to wait for an answer from him.

"Cane, did you listen to me?" Ethan asked, because Cane didn’t reply to his report about the funeral. He knew when Cane simply ignored him, but still listened to his report, but he also could tell when he spaced out and lately, he had been doing the latter whenever he stared at his daughter. "Cane?"

Cane was staring at Rora’s little fingers that wrapped around his forefinger, while she made baby noises, it seemed fascinated Cane.

"Cane." Ethan nudged his arm, because he couldn’t raise his voice and startled the baby, Cane would surely kick him on the ass if he did that and maybe there would be piles of assignment for him afterwards.

Cane blinked his eyes and then shifted his attention from his baby. "What?"

"Did you listen to my report about the funeral?"

Cane was silent for a moment and lightly spoke. "Repeat."

Ethan wanted to cry and pull his hair out of frustration, this was not the first time this happened, but when his eyes fell on the baby, he summoned his patience and repeated the report once again for his precious alpha.

=============================

"Miss?" Hanna called Iris when she saw Iris was awake, she looked around her groggily before her eyes laid on Hanna, who had tears on her eyes. "You are awake!" she sobbed lightly.

"Hanna?" Iris furrowed her brows. "Why are you here?"

Hanna stopped her sobs and then hugged Iris, which only made her even more confused. "What do you mean why I am here? Of course, I will be here, you are back to Howling Wolf pack now and have been wanting to see you, but you always sleep."

Iris blinked her eyes and as if her memories slowly returned back to her, she recalled the event. She started crying to when she hugged Hanna tightly.

"Hanna... I lost my baby... I lost her because I can’t protect her... I am a bad mother, I can’t protect my baby..." Iris cried inconsolably against Hanna’s chest, she felt this familiarity from her, the comfort that she always got from her ever since she was little and once she cried, she couldn’t stop. This was something that Iris couldn’t do with Aliana.

Yes, Iris was close with Aliana, especially during their travel together, but the bond between her and Hanna was completely different.

Hanna was the only person, who always with her since the beginning, the first person, who offered her comfort and love, someone who taught her how to be kind, someone who always be there.

Iris only had Hanna before she had Cane or anyone else by her side.

"Hanna, my baby is dead... my baby is dead..." Iris cried her heart out, this was not a silent cry like a sob that she occasionally let out in front of Cane or Aliana, but it was a full blown breakdown, where to the point, she was hyperventilating. Iris let out her grief and bared her feeling in the open for Hanna. "Hanna... what should I do? My baby is dead...!"

Hanna hugged Iris tightly, didn’t allow her to break into pieces even more, she tried to comfort her, as she kept whispering to her ear, but at the same time, she let her to express her sadness and agony.

People outside of the room could hear her heartache, the five warriors had their head hung so low, while Aliana stared at the closed door with a tray of food in her hands. She decided it was not the time for her to interrupt this moment with food, so she would wait until Iris calmed down.

Aliana believed, right now Iris needed Hanna more than anything, the two of them had gone through a lot and if Cane was not able to make Iris let out her misery and showed the anguish she felt, Hanna certainly could, with that Aliana stayed back.

However, not long after, when they still could hear Iris’s cry from outside, Kaz and Maria came to approach them.

Aliana frowned to see the pair and hand the tray of food to Zephyr, as she approached them before they could move closer toward the alpha and the luna’s bedroom.

"What do you want?" Aliana asked, she stopped them.

"Aliana, why are you so cold toward us?" Maria frowned. "We came here to greet the luna, because we have not yet met with her ever since she returned to the pack."

"Everyone else has not yet met with her too. She is not in a good condition to see anyone. You will be able to see her during the funeral." Aliana implied the two of them were not special to be able to meet with the luna when everyone else couldn’t.

Kaz sighed. "But, there are a few things we wanted to say to the luna. We wanted to apologize for what we have done to her in the past. Please, let us meet with her." Kaz wanted to walk past Aliana, but she blocked his way again. "What happened? Is that the luna, who is crying?"

Only then Kaz and Maria noticed the crying sound that came from the bedroom.

"What happened? Is the luna crying? Is she hurt?" Maria asked, she was about to approach the door, but Aliana held her hand firmly.
