The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 414: BEING CONSIDERATE
Chapter 414: BEING CONSIDERATE
Because the King would arrive in three days, they were arranging a small welcoming party for him, since it was a custom to greet the sovereign.
But, using the current situation as an excuse, so as not to provoke tension in the public, they decided to hold the welcoming party moderately. Especially after the death of the five alphas and with the five packs’ problems they needed to sort out looming over them, toning down a little bit on having his lust met would also help make the King look good.
After all, he brought Lady Cyan and Nala with him, accompanied by his chief of royal guards, Leon.
Iris’ mood turned even sour when she heard Nala’s name among the entourage of the King. She was not so dense as to not see the desire in that woman’s eyes for her mate.
Her mood became even more dour when Kaz suggested her to be the coordinator of the party, since it was her job as the Luna of the pack and she couldn’t refuse it.
It would look bad on her if she rejected the suggestion, especially when that old steward brought it up in front of Alpha Dristan and Sir Elijah.
People were already seeing her as a failure because she couldn’t conceive a child with Cane even after all this time, not to mention all the time they spent together, thus she didn’t want them to see her fail in her position as the Luna of the pack as well.
"You don’t need to do it if you don’t want to," Cane said. Unconcealed amusement danced in his eyes when he saw how Iris pulled at her hair in frustration.
They were inside the Alpha’s study, where Cane was overwhelmed with a lot of things that needed to be done. He didn’t seem to have time to rest and tended to spend most of his time in the study room rather than in his own room with Iris.
Both of them sat side by side, as Cane asked someone to put an extra table beside his for Iris to use, so she could handle all her paperwork, too.
"No, I can do it," Iris replied curtly.
At this point, she looked like an upset little kitten that didn’t want to be touched, as it wouldn’t hesitate to claw your hand if you did. But, when Cane extended his hand and caressed her cheek, she mewled.
Iris closed her eyes, before she realized it and pushed his hand away from her ear when he started to rub her earlobe.
"You are distracting me," Iris grumbled.
"Need help?"
"No."
Later on, Iris noticed the different treatment she received from the Howling Wolf pack members compared to Sofia even clearly.
They gave her the hardest parts of arranging the party like purchasing all the food from the merchants, meeting them one by one and thinking about the activities that they would do as long as the King would be here; to entertain him and some of the important figures who would come with him. More so, Cane had a special request for it.
Iris thought she would dread her meeting with the merchants, where she had to haggle for the first time, but thankfully, Cane sent his beta and Jace showed her how it should be done. Only then, she realized how petty the Beta was when it came to money, because he would haggle for every penny.
Meanwhile, Sofia used her pregnancy to not lift a finger while walking around commenting on things Iris did and amazingly, she could find all kinds of flaws in whatever she did.
Iris had enough of that.
"Why will everything start after dinner?" Sofia complained again when she saw the new arrangement. "I heard people in the south usually have parties from the morning until late at midnight."
Sofia confronted Iris in the hallway when she saw her. Beside her, there were two omegas from the Howling Wolf pack and one young woman, who came with Sofia as her personal maid.
"Because, that’s how it is done in the capital city," Iris said lightly. She stared at Sofia thinking how she felt bad for her in the beginning, but after the way she always tried to find ways to provoke her, she threw her sympathy out of the window.
Redmond didn’t even want to see her. He stayed away from the pack house and Iris had not seen him ever since they arrived in the Howling Wolf pack.
"But, this is the south," Sofia said firmly. She lifted her chin, as if they were on equal footing. "You should prepare it the way southerners usually do."
"What do you know about the south when you are not even a southerner?" Iris kept her voice even. She didn’t lower her head like she used to, nor did she feel timid in front of Sofia. If anything, she felt annoyed by her constant insistence to criticize her work.
Cane knew what she was doing and he didn’t say anything about it. And for her, as long as her mate didn’t complain, there was nothing wrong with her arrangements.
"Luna... she will be part of us..." Maria, the head of the kitchen, prompted from the side.
Iris remembered her from when she spent her time in the kitchen with Ethan and Joel before she left to the capital city and she treated her quite nicely, but it was such a disappointment as she clearly took Sofia’s side, nursing her with the same quality food that she gave to the Alpha, if it was not better.
"Then why doesn’t she help with anything?"
"As you can see, Luna, I am pregnant. I really want to help if I can, but currently, I am pregnant with the Alpha’s first child and I have to take good care of our baby," Sofia said softly, as she caressed her stomach gently.
The sight irritated Iris.
"Luna, you need to excuse her and be considerate," Maria chimed in timidly. She was being polite to Iris, but it was obvious she just wanted to shield Sofia.
Something inside Iris turned cold. She had the same gaze just as after Alpha Gill disgraced her.
"I have been considerate enough to let her walk over me countless times when she is only a mistress and the Alpha doesn’t even acknowledge her presence."
The last statement struck Sofia’s nerves.
