Chapter 408: HE DIDN’T KNOW WHICH ONE

Chapter 408: HE DIDN’T KNOW WHICH ONE

"Let them assume whatever they want, the higher they let their hopes up about something unreal, the harder they will fall," Cane said that lightly, as if this was not something that should bother Iris.

However, it only confused her further. "Don’t you care about your people? I mean... they will be really upset and sad when they finally learn the truth. Shouldn’t you give them some warning?"

"Iris, just like what I said before, I can’t save all people’s lives, much less their hearts. If you try to placate all the people around you, you will only put yourself through misery. You will only suffer, but for what? To please them? That’s the most ridiculous kind of torture you put yourself through."

Cane pinched her chin and stared deeply into her eyes. He could understand the conflict in her pretty head. She must have heard how well the people in the pack treated Sofia. Cane was also aware of how the members of his pack had not yet fully accepted her and we’re still skeptical over her role as their luna. Moreover, with her being away so often and not having enough time to bond with them didn’t help with the progress either.

"You are their luna, my equal. If they direct any disrespect toward you, it only means they disrespect me too. They need to learn that."

The members of his pack had gone through so much, but it didn’t mean once they freed themselves from the slavery, they could put a stop to the effort to survive. They needed to learn something from it, at the very least, they needed to not trust so easily and he was not here to coddle them and teach them such basic survival instincts.

Let them get hurt if they could learn from that. It also baffled Cane how they welcomed a stranger into their pack so easily.

Iris was silent, she was processing what Cane said and he left her at that.

The rest of the journey, neither Iris nor Cane said much, but it didn’t bother either of them, since it was a comforting silence that engulfed them.

They only stopped once for lunch and after that, this long entourage headed toward the Howling Wolf pack again. Iris stayed inside the carriage, while Hanna attended to her when Cane left to have a brief discussion with Sir Elijah.

Iris had this inkling that Cane wanted to use him, but she was not sure for what or what his plan was with the warriors from the border.

But, when Iris was having her lunch with Hanna inside the carriage, Haco sneaked inside and told Hanna to leave them alone.

"Did the Alpha allow you to come here?" Hanna frowned. She didn’t want to leave her missy with this strange sorcerer.

"You can call him here if you want, leave first, there is something important I want to discuss with her," Haco said, waving his hands impatiently at Hanna.

"It’s okay," Iris said to Hanna, to which she nodded and left, but she was sure she would tell Cane right away that Haco sneaked into the carriage. The woman couldn’t stop gushing over how well Cane treated her, how different he was from all the alphas. "What is it?"

"Here." Haco fished out a magic stone from his pocket and Iris immediately frowned.

She had felt that ominous feeling from Haco, but because he was a dark sorcerer, she didn’t think much when he carried one or two black magic stones. Yet...

"Why are you giving me that?" Iris didn’t take the black magic stone from his hand.

"Don’t worry, this curse is not as powerful as the one before." Haco reassured her. He wouldn’t be so reckless as to incur the Alpha’s wrath again by giving Iris a stone suffused with a powerful curse.

"You want me to purify it?" Iris tilted her head, not understanding.

"I want you to not purify it," Haco said and this made her frown.

"I don’t know how to." She didn’t even know how she purified the stone, it just happened and now Haco wanted her to do the opposite.

"Try, I want to make sure about something." Haco extended his hand with his palm open, where the black magic stone sat coldly.

Right at that moment, Cane entered the carriage. His expression was as stoic as ever and when his gaze fell on the magic stone in his palm, his eyes turned so cold, as if he could expunge the black magic stone.

"Don’t worry, this is harmless, this is harmless!" Haco cried out to see the dark expression on Cane’s face, as he quickly explained what he was doing there.

Cane sat down next to Iris and said nothing, while the sorcerer rambled on. "Is that possible?"

"I think so," Haco replied, he shook his hand, indicating Iris to take the stone. She did and the stone was immediately purified, as the black wisp came out of it.

"It worked?" Cane was clueless about magic, thus he didn’t know how things worked.

"Nah, she purified it." Haco leaned his back against the seat.

"Purified it..." Cane repeated the words. "Are you sure she purified it?"

"A hundred percent," Haco said with confidence. "The curse is gone and the stone is only a stone." He crushed the stone between his fingers, as it had no use anymore.

"Are you sure she purified it and not absorbed it?" There was this glint of complicated feeling in his eyes. Haco tilted his head, seemingly trying to discern what Cane was trying to say. "It’s two different things. Did she purify it, or did she absorb the curse?"

Getting such a question, Haco fell deep in thought. The curse had gone because of Iris, but now Cane raised another question, he couldn’t distinguish the difference either.

In the end, Haco couldn’t give him a definite answer and left the carriage because they needed to continue with their journey.

Iris stared at Cane, deep in thought.

It was night when they finally arrived at the Howling Wolf pack.
