The Alpha: Claiming His Enemy's Daughter -
Chapter 397: SHE COULD LISTEN TO HIM FOR HOURS
Chapter 397: SHE COULD LISTEN TO HIM FOR HOURS
Iris was dumbfounded to read what Cane said. She was utterly speechless. Was he being cunning with her too?
"You kissed me!" Iris insisted with her reason, but she couldn’t elaborate further, as her face turned bright red. Probably, it was because of the harsh sun...
"I have done that several times now."
"Are you being... ingenious with me now?" Iris asked sullenly, since she didn’t know how to call him out on tricking her with a kiss without sounding weird.
"You need to learn how to compose yourself." Cane brushed her bangs and caressed her rosy cheek. "You are always so easy to read."
People around them watched this interaction and how gentle the Alpha from the Howling Wolf pack was with his mate. In their minds, someone, who was capable of executing the five alphas and treating their bodies so cruelly after that, wouldn’t have a single gentle bone in their body, nor would they be able to find in themselves to be kind.
Yet, what they were witnessing right now was something that was completely different from what they imagined...
While they were receiving all the things that they needed, such as food and clean clothes, the Alpha and the Luna were being affectionate with each other. The Alpha treated her so respectfully and he did it naturally. It was unheard of for a man of his status to treat their woman so well, especially when the woman had not yet conceived their child after such a long time.
Not to mention the dark story behind the two of them...
"Don’t you think he is being overly affectionate with that woman?" Alpha Dristan asked Koda, as the two of them stood out of anyone’s earshot.
"Hm. it’s not normal," Koda replied, his eyes glued to Cane, who was smiling at his mate. She looked sullen. They didn’t know what they were talking about, but from their standing point, it looked like the Alpha was being playful with his luna. "Knowing him, he must be up to something."
The two of them agreed that the Alpha from the Howling Wolf pack was too cunning. They couldn’t lower their guard, or else, it would be them who became the sacrifice in whatever plan he had in his mind. Alpha Dristan didn’t completely trust Cane, so didn’t Koda.
After all, there was no such a thing as complete trust between the alphas of two different packs. It would be so naïve of you, if you thought such a thing existed.
A person’s heart could change and there was no such thing as loyalty that would last forever in this realm, there were only benefits and self interests, and greater than that was a pack’s chance to profit.
All of them knew that and even those poor five alphas understood it to a certain level.
"Is it really a bad thing to be easily readable?" Iris asked, as they walked toward the tunnel, while people either avoided them or lowered their heads submissively, not wanting to provoke the Alpha.
"In this battle, yes. You don’t want your enemy to know what is in your mind or how you are feeling in a certain situation." Cane was exceptionally chatty today, as he explained things to her. Things she should learn, things she should remember, things she should do.
Iris frowned, but then she stood in front of Cane, forcing him to stop walking. For a moment, she just stared at him, but he could sense how a myriad of questions swirled inside that pretty head of hers.
"How can you easily read people? How do you know what their motives are? You always seem to be able to be two or three steps ahead of them." Iris was still fascinated by how Cane could advance this far within less than a year since he freed himself and his people from the slavery.
Would it be possible that their pack would have never fallen into slavery if he was the Alpha at that time? Cane was only a little bit older than Iris right now when their pack fell into her father’s hands.
Cane smiled softly at her question. If it was someone else, he wouldn’t waste his breath to answer such a question. "I don’t know how to read people’s motives, Iris. I pay close attention to their personalities."
Iris furrowed her brows. "How so?"
"People tend to use themselves as a measuring stick while viewing others. It will be easy to predict the next move of a person who behaved rationally and was motivated by something, you need to pay close attention to what motivates them, it will be either power, money, or woman... there must be something that moves them. Even the actions of people who are purely motivated by their emotions could be easily read after careful observation." Cane tapped the tip of her nose. "Observe your surroundings more."
Iris felt her mind swirling, she had never thought in that way. When Cane said people tended to use themselves as a measuring stick while viewing others, it rang a bell in her mind, because she did exactly that.
Meanwhile, Cane could see how Iris was starting to grasp what he was saying, thus he didn’t bother her when she was deep in her own thoughts and took her hand to continue walking.
"Have you never been afraid before?"
"Of course, I have been." Cane stared at her.
"How can you pretend that you are not?"
"My father told me this; weakness is a guise, wear it when you need to use it for your own benefit, but never when you feel it." Cane chuckled lightly, but there was no humor in it. "At the end of the day, all of this is about profit."
Iris didn’t realize this before, but right now, she felt like she would never get tired of talking with Cane, as if she could talk to him all day and they wouldn’t run out of topics, or she could listen to him for hours without being tired.
And then, she remembered something. "I saw it." Her expression darkened.
"Hm? What did you see?" Cane asked.
