Chapter 382: A LESSON TO LEARN

Chapter 382: A LESSON TO LEARN

Later that night, after Iris and Cane had their dinner, they talked for a bit before the exhaustion hit Iris. It was a long day for her, a tired one at that, since she went through a lot of turmoil and everything that happened in the span of the last two days had drained her emotionally. All she needed right now was a good sleep.

Cane was there to hold her when she drifted into her slumber, patting her back in soothing motion, as he occasionally kissed her head.

He didn’t think he had completely gotten her back, as she was in so much pain and it would take her more time to heal, but sometimes, there was a wound that couldn’t be healed no matter how long you endured it. You would have to live with it and it was fine... as the pain would remind you how you had survived to this point.

He wished nothing for her, but to be strong, in her mind, in her heart, because she would need that strength to go through what would come later.

Once Iris had fallen asleep and her breathing evened out, Cane slowly detached himself from her and got off the bed. He made sure she was covered with a blanket warmly because she had low tolerance to coldness before he kissed her forehead and walked out of the bedroom.

His beta had been waiting for him there.

Jace looked anxious and kept frowning at him, he stared at Cane weirdly, as if he was going to say something, but didn’t know how to voice out his concern.

"Did you come here to stare at me?" Cane asked, he folded his arms in front of his chest, leaning his back against the door behind him. His beta was acting weirdly. "Something bad is going on?"

Jace shook his head and continued with the report about the condition with the other four packs and the pack member’s reaction upon hearing their alphas had been executed for engaging in dark magic.

Those pack members’ reaction was more or less the same as the Riverside pack members, they didn’t really mourn the death of their alphas, only became a little bit anxious about what Cane was going to do and what would happen to them.

They were not worried about who would become the next alpha and lead the pack, because after a long winter, they were facing something more concerning. Winter resulted in famine throughout the region and these five alphas did nothing to help them and now when the winter passed, they needed to bury their family members and fight for their own lives to survive.

That was why they dreaded what would happen to them next with the change of power within the pack, not actually really caring about their dead alphas.

"What about their betas and gammas?" The four alphas came here without their betas and gammas, thus there were these people, who were still in charge within the packs.

"Just like your instructions, we have sent people to overlook the situation there and keep tabs on what they are doing. Your guess is right, those alphas have been hoarding food grains during winter." Jace looked so upset when he reported this, because he knew how scarce was food during winter and how many people had died because they couldn’t survive during this harsh period of time, while Alpha Gerald and his nasty men had a lot of things to eat during that time.

The reason was; they were hoarding food. All the southern alphas did that to their pack members, afraid the food wouldn’t be enough for all the parties they held, while people barely had anything to eat.

That was why it was easy for Cane to guess, actually, there was a lot of food, enough for all people and to keep them from starving.

"Arthur has returned to the pack and is now observing the situation with Sofia," Jace said, nudging the mystery he was dying to unravel, once he finished with his main report. "What are you going to do with her?"

"Nothing," Cane replied curtly and Jace felt dejected when he heard that short answer as usual.

"I understand once the baby comes out, they will know the baby is not your child, but what are you going to do with the pack members? They will be heartbroken to learn they have been deceived." Jace tried to get more incite over this situation.

"It will be a lesson for them to learn not to trust something blindly, just because it seems like something they have been wishing for."

Sometimes, a lesson needed to be taught gently, so you would understand it better, but sometimes, it would come harshly, so it would be deeply engraved in your mind and build your character, something you would never forget.

Cane chose the harshest and fastest way for his pack members, since he didn’t have time to coddle them with explanations when they were very excited without having any doubt at all and jumped to the conclusion that their prayers had been answered.

"What about Iris?" Jace tried to push his luck. "I feel like the pack members will put her under pressure because she is not yet with a child..." His voice trailed off, because he knew he touched a sensitive topic, but he was dying of curiosity about what was going on with the two of them.

Originally, Cane planned to send Iris back to the Howling Wolf pack because of what happened with Alpha Gill, but in Jace’s opinion, their pack members wouldn’t be of any help with Sofia around, if anything, Iris would feel unwelcomed. The Beta understood the gravity of the situation.

"She will be with me until the matters in the pack have been dealt with." In other words, Cane wouldn’t return until the baby was born, so wouldn’t Iris.

"Ohh..." Jace was at a loss. "Are you serious about her?" He finally blurted it out. "I saw you... treat her differently. You kissed her, why?"
