Chapter 368: ANOTHER SIDE OF IRIS (2)

Redmond was stunned to see how Cane took the dagger calmly. As a warrior, he knew the Alpha could avoid getting stabbed easily, but he didn’t dodge it. Hell! He didn’t even try. He used such an extreme way to get the dagger out of Iris’ hand.

Once Cane could pry Iris’ hand away from the handle, he put some distance between them, to make sure she wouldn’t be able to snatch it back, only then Cane pulled out the dagger and threw it away, as more fresh blood burst out from his wound.

The way Cane took out the dagger recklessly, only aggravated the wound. Knowing what happened to the Alpha, Redmond shouldn’t be surprised how well he could endure the pain, but he still was.

Redmond was stupefied, until Jace elbowed him to get his attention.

"Where is Alpha Gill?" Jace asked. He used this reason to give some space for Cane and Iris. He didn’t need to know how the Alpha would take control of the situation, as he knew he wouldn’t handle it poorly. "Take me to him first."

And without waiting for Redmond’s answer, the Beta immediately dragged him away and closed the door behind him.

Inside the room, once it was only the two of them, Cane stared into Iris’ eyes deeply and then took off his cloak, so he could cover her body.

Yet, Iris didn’t even care about her current state, as she slapped Cane so hard, her nails grazed his cheek. Blood streamed down from his cheek. Even so, Cane didn’t do anything, nor did he look angry at his mate.

"Iris, it’s me." Cane didn’t make any move, since he didn’t want to upset her further. It seemed, her mind was elsewhere. She saw everything as a danger she had to protect herself from. It was almost like an instinct and all Cane could do was to pull her back to reality.

However, it was not an easy task to accomplish.

"Iris." Cane made sure Iris could read his lips, but it was a futile attempt when she had shut down mentally.

Another slap landed on Cane’s cheek, but this time, he caught her hand and held it firmly, but Iris used her other hand to slap him again and Cane did the same.

He could dodge those slaps, yet he didn’t do it, same as when he accepted her stabbing him with the dagger. Some part of him had this thought that he deserved the pain.

If Iris was in her right mind and she wanted to hit him, he would accept it too. He would let her do whatever she wanted with him.

Iris might think he had forgotten about what he had done to her, whether when he deflowered her cruelly or when they were in the library, or how he had mistreated her all this time, whether he did it intentionally or unintentionally. No. He didn’t forget a single thing of what he had done to her. He remembered everything.

Every. Single. Thing.

She didn’t deserve any of that. She didn’t deserve him. She deserved someone better. For all she had done for his pack, whether it was when they were in the slavery or after that, even if Cane had to give his life to repay her, the debt would remain unpaid...

He apologized to her once when he learned what Prince Kellan had done to her, but he knew such a lame apology wouldn’t even graze the extent of his misdoings.

"Arrgh!!!" Iris screamed, she thrashed her body violently and tried to free herself from Cane’s grip, but he held her too tight and it was impossible for her to breakfree with her own strength. "AARGGH!!!"

Iris let out a shrill scream that could be heard in the next room. Redmond looked worried, but Jace convinced him to stay put and let the Alpha handle the situation.

"Iris," Cane called her name again, but Iris only became more hysterical. She tried to kick him this time, her blue eyes looked so wild, like a wounded animal. "Iris." Cane squeezed her hand to get her attention, but she refused to look at him.

She didn’t recognize him and that thought dreaded him somehow.

Would it be only temporary, or would she end up spiraling out of control even more... just like Venna.

"Iris, please, come back to me." Cane’s voice was like a whisper. He knew she wouldn’t be able to hear him, but he still said it solemnly, as if it was a prayer. "Come back to me."

And this time, Iris bit him so hard on his left wrist, since she couldn’t free either of her hands from his grip. Still, Cane didn’t budge. He let her vent out her feelings, if this could ease her pain.

It was Alpha Gill, who had made her like this, but in some way, Cane treated this as a punishment for himself, for him to ease his guilt.

The wound on his shoulder had not yet stopped bleeding because Iris used a silver dagger to stab him and it would need a long time to heal completely, but the scratches on his cheek had long disappeared, leaving only traces of blood on his skin.

Iris cried, as she bit down his wrist so hard, her teeth pierced his flesh, which made her able to taste the metallic taste on her tongue.

Cane loosened his grip on her hand when she stopped thrashing her body and then released her when she finally stopped biting him. Iris blinked her eyes, as tears streamed down her face. Her whole body was trembling. She stared at Cane, but it was not clear whether she saw him or someone else. Her gaze looked so distant.

Cane took his cloak and draped it around her shoulders carefully, so she wouldn’t be alerted by their closeness. He moved carefully around her when he saw she didn’t retaliate against his approach.

He tried to wipe off the blood from her cheeks and chest, but some blood had already dried on her skin and hair.

Meanwhile, Iris flinched with his every touch, but she didn’t shy away from him. She stared at her hands in silence for a long time and Cane didn’t want to interrupt her thoughts, as he stayed there with her without saying anything.

And after a long period of silence, Iris lifted her head to look at him and then showed her hand that was still covered with blood, as she spoke in a small voice.

"Blood," she said.

"We need to clean you up to get rid of the blood. Let’s go back to our room, okay?" Cane spoke in a coaxing tone, as he tightened his cloak around her body.

Iris stared at him for some time before she nodded.

Seeing the consent she gave her, Cane gathered her in his arms and carried her out of that bloody room with her body wrapped tightly in his cloak. Iris buried her face in the crook of his shoulder.

She had stopped crying, but there was something inside of her that had shifted. Something had died inside of her.

Iris opened her eyes, as Cane walked away, she stared at the room, where Alpha Gill had assaulted her, coldly and then spoke languidly. "My dagger..."
