Chapter 354: HAPPINESS
Chapter 354: HAPPINESS
Iris pouted reading Cane’s answer, but she was not done yet, as she pressed on and nudged his arm again when he was about to close his eyes. She became bolder since he started letting her get her way.
"What if there is another realm and there is a person just like you and all the people that you know, what do you think the ’you’ in a different realm is doing right now?"
Cane indeed didn’t lose his patience when he listened to her, but it didn’t mean he would always give her an elaborate answer.
"Sleep, Iris. It’s midnight. You need to wake up early in the morning."
Iris looked sullen. "You sound like Hanna," she muttered to herself, and of course, Cane could hear that, but he simply put his warm and big palm over her eyes, coaxing her to close them, so she could fall asleep.
"Say, if you can get everything you want, what do you want to have?"
"Happiness," Cane said simply. He said it very casually, as if he didn’t even have to think about it.
However, his answer was something Iris had never thought of before. She didn’t even think he would answer that way, but when she was about to pull down his hand that covered her sight, Cane’s hand stayed firm.
"Sleep," he said more sternly this time.
And the next morning, they followed the same routine with Cane helping Iris with her hair before they went straight to the Riverside pack. They arrived at noon and met with Jace, the Beta, in a small town within the Riverside pack.
This was the first time they met other people after two weeks of running through the forest, but Cane had emphasized for her to stay inside their room and cover herself whenever she went out, because they still needed to keep their whereabouts a secret.
Therefore, when Cane went out to meet with Jace, he went alone, leaving Iris inside the room with the little lizard.
"Is it done?" Cane asked, he was wearing a cloak and covered his face with a scarf that many merchants usually wore during long journeys.
"Yes, it’s done," Jace replied. The Beta was wearing a similar outfit to cover his identity.
Currently, they were talking in the restaurant, sitting near the window, where they could see the street outside. The inn was on the second floor of this building and it would be fine to leave Iris alone for half an hour.
"Arthur?"
"He has been here ever since we received the body."
Cane nodded. After that, they talked about a few important things and their next move.
Meanwhile, on the second floor, Iris was playing with her little pet and fed it meat. But then, she realized the lizard had shed skin.
"Hm? It’s beautiful..." Iris muttered to herself, as she put the dry skin in a handkerchief before she folded it and put it inside the pocket without thinking further, because she thought it had a beautiful color, like a rainbow under the sunlight. "What else can you do?"
Iris nuzzled its head and the little creature tilted its head, blinking its small pair of eyes at her.
She was sitting on the chair, resting her head on her arms while leaning her upper body on the table. Her long braided hair was twisted into a bun on top of her head, Cane managed to find a way to do that.
But, while Iris was absentmindedly talking to her lizard, she caught some movement from the corner of her eyes and this startled her, as she immediately straightened her back and saw a young man, standing in the corner of the room.
She gasped in shock and immediately looked for the exit door, but this man also did the same. He put his finger in front of his lips, indicating for Iris not to make a noise. How could Iris do that when she felt so scared! How could this man enter this room?!
Iris glanced at the window, which was slightly ajar. He came in through there, but then this was the second floor!
What was he? A magic user? A shifter?
But when her mind was trying to discern the situation, the little lizard jumped from the table and landed on the floor swiftly before the little creature headed to this mysterious man.
Right at that time, Iris realized who this man was, no wonder he looked very familiar, as if she had seen him in the past.
She had indeed met him before. He was the same person who had entered her room when they were in the black market.
This young man had golden hair and green eyes, which were almost the same color as moss. He had a lean body and didn’t look like a fighter at all, as if he had never engaged in violence.
But, what surprised Iris was the fact the lizard went to him and acted so obedient in front of this mysterious man. The young man walked to the fireplace and made the lizard light up the fire.
He didn’t look aggressive and Iris didn’t feel any ominous feelings from him, as if, weirdly enough, she was sure he wouldn’t hurt her.
Moreover, Iris was curious why the lizard looked so docile in front of this stranger, when this creature was usually very hostile to anyone, aside from Iris and Hanna. It had even tried to burn Cane a few times.
After settling the fireplace, which made the room become so warm, this young mysterious man beckoned Iris to come closer.
Still on alert, Iris refused to budge, she was thinking whether she could reach the door before he could stop her or not.
On the other hand, realizing that Iris was not going to approach him, the young man simply tossed the lizard into the fireplace.
"No!" Iris widened her eyes in horror. The lizard was hatched from a fire magic stone and could breathe fire as well, but she was not sure whether it could survive being thrown into fire. "What are you doing?!" Iris rushed over frantically, but when she tried to get back her lizard, the little creature was already gone. "No way!"
Iris watched in horror. Did the poor lizard turn into ashes? Iris tried to search for it, it was probably stuck between the firewood or something, but the man with green eyes, who stared at her the whole time, caught her arm and stopped her. He shook his head.
"You are a monster! What did you do to my lizard!?" Iris screamed in frustration. Her heart was beating so fast.
Seeing how angry Iris was, the man got flustered, he then pulled her away from the fireplace, and let her hit him, but he tried to light up the brazier. It was hard for him to do that when Iris kept trying to hit him, especially when he didn’t fight her back.
But, once the brazier had been lit up, the little lizard jumped out of the flame onto his palms.
The man then turned around and presented the lizard to her with both hands. He smiled innocently, like a little boy, who was asking for praise, while Iris was dumbfounded.
