Chapter 296: WHAT ARE WE GOING TO PLAY?
Iris was only seven years old at that time, it was the first winter after Hanna became her personal maid. She remembered how Hanna used to bring her hot chocolate to warm her body and she liked it.
During that time, Iris often saw Prince Kellan come visiting their pack house and play with her brother. She would always be jealous because Mason would make sure she watched them having fun from her window.
Therefore, when the Prince noticed her and started playing with her, she was very happy. She waited for his visits and was no longer jealous of Mason, because after Prince Kellan finished playing with him, he would always come to her bedroom.
"What will we play today?" Iris stared at him expectantly. She wished her brother would be as nice as him, since Mason was so mean to her and always made her cry.
"I have a new game," Kellan said, he enunciated his words slowly, because sometimes Iris would misread it. "But, this game is a secret, can you keep it a secret?"
"Yes," Iris said eagerly, she was so giddy to have a secret of her own.
"You can’t tell Hanna either."
"Why?"
"Because this is a secret."
"Okay." Little Iris didn’t want to upset the Prince, because he was the only one who wanted to play with her besides Hanna, thus she nodded her head eagerly. She wanted to please him, so he would like her more. "What will we play?"
Iris watched Kellan’s lips move, but she couldn’t read what he was saying.
"I can’t read it, can you slow down a bit, please..." Iris furrowed her brows, even after the Prince said it slowly, she couldn’t capture the words he said. "What did you say..."
And when Iris stared at Kellan’s lips closely, those lips drew into a beautiful smile and everything went black. Iris was startled because she didn’t like dark places, yet when she opened her eyes, she found herself inside a bright room and her body was so warm.
She rubbed her eyes groggily, as she felt someone was so close to her and she realized she was actually sitting in someone’s lap. When she lifted her head, the first thing she noticed was Cane staring at her. He had a towel in his left hand, while his right arm secured her in position, so she wouldn’t fall when she was sleeping.
"Awake?" Cane asked, he wiped her sweat and put down the towel to reach a glass on the table next to the bed. "Come, drink this."
Sluggishly, Iris drank it, but she immediately pushed it away because the taste was so bitter. "What is that?"
"Medicine."
Iris frowned, but then she remembered what happened. She then looked at her arms and her palms, but there were no scratches on her skin.
"The healer stopped the bleeding on your arms and palms, but she couldn’t do anything about your allergy," Cane explained shortly. "Hanna had gone to great lengths to find the ingredients for this medicine. You have to finish it."
"That’s bitter," Iris said sullenly. She frowned at the sight of that black liquid.
"I will give you candy after you finish it."
"I am not a child." Iris pursed her lips. She had forgotten about her dreams.
"Then drink this." Cane put the glass close to her lips again and Iris didn’t have any other choice, but to drink it, there was no room for negotiation when the Alpha insisted on something.
"Where is the candy?" Iris demanded after she finished drinking the bitter medicine and Cane popped the candy into her mouth. Gradually, the bitterness disappeared when she chewed on it.
Iris glanced out the window and the sky was so bleak, she was not sure if it was early morning or it was already night.
"Is it morning?"
"Hm." Cane nodded and Iris could see the gesture.
"I slept the whole night."
"You have slept two whole nights."
"Pardon?" Iris missed what Cane said, as she lifted her head and looked at him.
"You slept for two whole nights."
Reading that, Iris was stunned, she didn’t think she had fallen asleep for that long, but there was no way Cane would lie to her and it was even more impossible for the Alpha to make a joke.
After that, Cane put her on the bed, as she laid down and he walked out of the room, not long after that, Hanna came. Her eyes were red, obviously she had been crying.
"You scared me," Hanna said, as she hugged Iris and kissed her cheeks. "I thought you would not open your eyes anymore."
Hanna tended to be a little bit dramatic when she was being overwhelmed with her emotions. "I am fine, Hanna. It’s just an allergy."
"No!" Hanna let her go, but she stared at Iris sternly. "You were unconscious for two days and two nights, more so, the Alpha didn’t allow anyone to enter the room, how could I not feel so restless?"
Iris found the information a little bit weird. "Why didn’t the Alpha allow you to enter the room?" She thought Hanna took care of her and she just happened to wake up in Cane’s arms, because he got used to sleeping while hugging her.
"Unless when I brought you medicine or a meal, he didn’t allow anyone else to enter the room." Hanna then remembered something. "Prince Kellan entered this room once, but he came out after a few minutes. I think the Alpha didn’t entertain him and clearly showed how he didn’t want to be bothered."
"Really?" Iris was surprised. "Then... Is it the Alpha too, who changed my dress?" Iris remembered she didn’t wear this simple dress during dinner that night.
"Yes, who else?" Hanna tilted her head and watched how Iris bit her lip.
"Hanna... I vomited in front of him..." Iris said in a small voice, she looked terrified when she remembered the smell. "It’s so embarrassing..." She really wanted to cry.
How could Cane be so calm to see her like that?
