Chapter 284: WILL YOU STAY BY MY SIDE?
Chapter 284: WILL YOU STAY BY MY SIDE?
Redmond was furious about what Cane had done in front of Iris. His action was uncalled for. He had said he was in full control even in his lycan form whenever Iris was nearby, but it didn’t seem like it after his atrocious action of killing Prince Vemion right before their eyes, especially in Iris’ presence.
If Redmond knew Cane would lose control in his lycan form, he wouldn’t have allowed him to be close to Iris.
"Leave," Cane said coldly when he saw Redmond was about to attack him. He was ready to throw him out of the room if he had to. He didn’t have time for his childish behavior, as he clung to Iris, thinking because he had pledged his loyalty to her, he could have a say in her matters.
Redmond was ready to shift and fight the Alpha and Cane was more than ready to take him down, there was a limit for his rancorous behavior and this warrior had crossed boundaries many times.
However, before the fight could break out, Iris finally spoke. "Leave."
Both of them turned their heads toward her. She looked so pale, but her blue eyes were a few shades darker.
"Yeah, leave," Redmond said smugly to Cane, yet his smirk disappeared so fast when Iris corrected him.
"No, I want you to leave, Redmond. I want to talk to him."
Redmond’s jaw dropped. "Are you serious? You want to talk to him alone? He just killed that damned prince an hour ago in such a brutal way. Do you really feel safe to be with him alone?"
Iris had her eyes fixed on Redmond, she was already a little bit calm when she spoke. "If he wants to kill me, do you really think you can stop him?"
Iris got a point. Redmond wouldn’t be able to fight Cane and Iris was not much of a help. The Alpha could kill them both without any help.
Gritting his teeth, Redmond walked out of the room, but he didn’t forget to slam the door. The warrior was upset beyond words.
And now, after Redmond left, there were only Iris and Cane inside the room, as the two of them stared at each other, but none of them started to talk, until Iris broke the silence after a few excruciatingly slow minutes.
"Was that you? Or the lycan?" Iris fiddled with her dress, she did this whenever she was nervous and when Cane took a step closer to approach her, she took a step back. The sight of him holding Prince Vemion’s dead body with his heart in his hand was still clear in her mind. She was afraid of how vicious the lycan was... or was it Cane?
"It was me," Cane replied shortly. He didn’t hide this fact. He had thought about it thoroughly and he wanted to know how Iris would handle this.
"Why?" Iris felt her throat turn dry, her voice came out choked. She still entertained the idea that Cane lost his control upon the lycan, that was a better case, but not anymore after he admitted himself. "Why did you kill him? What did he have done wrong?"
Laluna was trying to get Cane’s attention and Iris was a little bit upset with the way she acted around him, but Prince Vemion had done nothing, he was nice to them compared to the Crown Prince. He greeted them and did his duty, he even stood up for them during the confrontation when they arrived in the palace.
Cane didn’t need to kill him. He had no reason to do so. Prince Vemion didn’t even have any hand in the matter with Ethan.
"Why?" Iris could feel herself almost begging him to explain the situation, because she was very confused, though deep down she knew explaining things was not Cane’s strong forte. "I want to understand."
The Alpha didn’t say anything for a long time, while Iris waited for him to speak, a little bit of explanation would help her to figure out what he was actually trying to do.
Needless to say, kidnapping the Prince and killing him would cause a huge ripple in the capital city, the whole royal family and the Red Claw pack would investigate this matter, this was a very serious matter and Cane must know about it.
Therefore, it didn’t make sense that he made this move. What kind of game was he playing right now? He put everyone in danger.
"Prince Vemion is innocent in all of this, isn’t he?" Iris asked him again, she really did try to understand him.
"His status already made it impossible for him to be innocent in anything," Cane finally replied, his tone was cold, as if he didn’t feel any regret for what he had done, because that was what he felt.
In other words, though Vemion didn’t show any malicious intentions, look hostile, or act like the Crown Prince, there was something hideous he was hiding. Everyone from the royal family did. Some of them more apparent, as they did it bluntly, but some of them did it slyly, underhandedly, to manipulate people’s perception of them.
The people that belonged to the last category were the dangerous ones.
Cane would rather face someone like Alan all the time, rather than those people, who built up a good image, while doing abhorrent acts behind people’s backs.
Cane taught Iris that everything was not as she saw it, things would never be as simple as she saw the world and he was not as ’kind’ as she thought he was.
Cane could see Iris had warmed up to him, she forgot what he had done and forgave too easily. He wanted to remind her, he was still the monster who would be able to do anything in order to reach his goal.
"This is the first time for you to see me going beyond the unthinkable in order to get what I want. And this will not be the last time you’ll see me killing someone." Cane took a step closer again. "Will you still stay by my side?"
