Chapter 10: SysDi 10: Improving little by little

2 days later...

There are a lot of things that happened during the past days.

First, Spire’s dad, Sir Theobald Valrepite came to their humble home the very next day after he had been contacted with his daughter’s whereabouts.

Evan remembered how intense of a person he was, but knowing how Spire was in the brief moment they knew each other, he could understand her more now.

They were offered some sort of compensation, which Evan’s parents denied. Even if Spire tried to convince them, it was in vain. So, the father and daughter left and promised they will pay this favor a thousandfold one day.

Once they were gone, Evan is back with doing routines around the house and the field. The only difference was that his parents were almost always never around.

They seemed to always busy. Evan could only hold conversation with them during dinner time only. Naturally, it meant that Evan had to take care of the fields himself, which he didn’t mind. Watering the fields manually is difficult, but it’s the only way he knew how, considering that he doesn’t have mana or water abilities like his father did.

Interestingly enough, Evan seems to only find out that as long as he made sure he doesn’t get too mentally tired doing his everyday tasks, he didn’t need to nap to replenish his usage.

He started using it with the berries, really, making sure that he had memorized the best way to harvest them.

After two days, he was able to get it down without the need for the Simulation Zone anymore, which made him move onto the next, the garden.

He’s in front of the fruits and vegetables now, staring at them and wondering where to even start.

Evan remembers that his mother just told him not to over-water the plants, get the stray weeds and then use the shovel to let the roots breathe, but to be very careful as to not hit it.

"Simulation Zone." He says.

The familiar whoosh went past his ear. It meant that he is ready to begin.

He touched the watering can, he could, puts it down.

Picked up the shovel, he can. Puts it down again.

Then, he began to move around the garden, trying to see which ones cannot be touched.

The vegetables can be touched, the fruit trees, not really. His hands passes through the tree barks.

"You can only try one thing at a time." Iva reminds him in his head.

Another thing was that Iva is very helpful in saying some things even without being asked to.

The voice wasn’t that helpful before, but Evan appreciates that Iva is willing to give him information that he really needed. He had no reason to assume that he didn’t really have access to all the answers to his questions automatically in the first place and now do.

"Oh, okay. Thanks, Iva." Evan replies and goes back to the vegetables.

Evan began the usual part of his routine. Watering the vegetables, and using the shovel to let some of them breathe works really well.

Then, he stopped, looked confused with the vegetables.

"Something’s missing." Evan says, furrowing his eyebrows. "Iva, is there anything else vegetables need?"

"That depends. Some of them needs trimming." Iva replied.

Evan made his way towards the kitchen and grabbed the scissors. Then, made his way back towards the garden again.

He stared at the first batch of vegetables. "I have no idea how to do this." Evan chuckles. "How am I supposed to- you know what? Trial and error."

"You can do it!" Iva cheers.

For what felt like hours, Evan snips wrong and right parts, the repetition tedious each time.

When he was done with the first batch, the Simulation Zone stops, returning the vegetables to their original, untrimmed state.

Evan sighs. He knows what will happen but it still didn’t make him feel great.

Because of how complex the entire thing was, Evan only snipped those parts he is more than sure enough.

It was very difficult to remember which ones were the right trim. But at least, he was able to finish the first batch cleanly, but not without the second use of the Simulation Zone just to be absolutely sure.

Once he’s done, Evan slumps on his bed, groaning as he feels both mental and physical strain.

’Why do you insist in using Simulation Zone so often? It gives you headache with prolonged usage.’Iva asked.

"It’s the only thing I currently have." Evan says, lifting his hand, and making it into a fist before letting it drop back on the bed. "It’s the thing I know I can train to use while also making things better here, one thing at a time. I have a feeling this would help in the long run."

Iva hums. ’If you say so. You’re very naive, determined, curious and reckless.’

Evan rolled his eyes and sighs. "I don’t know if that’s a compliment but I’ll take it as one."

There’s a bit of silence between them.

"Iva, it’s been three days... Have I gotten better?" He asked, not really sure how to guage his own ability.

Sure, the watch isn’t exactly his. The way he is able to do things is because of the watch that is somehow within him now. He is able to try and see the best possible scenario of something through it’s usage.

As for how to improve, he’s got no clue. The only thing he noticed though was that he knew that headaches are a bad thing, an over-usage perhaps? He’s not sure. Maybe he’s overexerting it?

’I would say better.’ Iva replied, after a while. ’You still can’t automatically shut down the Simulation Zone once you’re in it, but you’re memory sharpened.’

Evan groans. "That’s one good thing then. Still more things to go."

He still haven’t had the chance to ask his parents about how to possibly strengthen one’s mental strength. He had heard meditation could be a thing to do, but that’s not something he knew how to go about with.

Evan stretched his limbs. "Wake me up after 30 minutes, Iva. I’ll take a nap."

’Okay- Wait, I’m not your alarm clock!’ Iva complains but Evan already fell asleep.
