Chapter 66: He Is Not Worth It

After Huang Fu left the Defender Army’s barrack with the tax money, Wang Yong looked at Li Zhiyuan who stood there in silence. Wang Yong didn’t know what he was thinking, but just stood behind him without interrupting his thoughts. After standing quietly until the sunset, Li Zhiyuan suddenly opened his mouth.

"Wang Yong, you have been working under me for more than ten years since you joined the army. Do you think I am loyal to the wrong person?" He asked in a low and hoarse voice.

Seeing the sadness and disappointment in Li Zhiyuan’s eyes, Wang Yong silently lowered his head. After a moment of silence, he asked, "General, do you want to hear the truth or polite words?"

Hearing his question, Li Zhiyuan chuckled lightly and said, "Tell me the truth."

Wang Yong raised his head, looked at him and sincerely said, "He is not worth it."

Both of them knew the meaning of Wang Yong’s words, but they didn’t speak any more after that. Unlike the gloomy atmosphere that shrouded the Defender Army’s barrack, Huang Fu’s face was full of smiles. Sitting inside the horse carriage, he opened the curtain, and looked out from the small window. Seeing that the sun was shining brightly but the street was deserted, he frowned unhappily and called the housekeeper.

"Send the one million taels of silver to Left Prime Minister Yang’s residence, and send the rest to the hidden village." He ordered calmly.

The housekeeper nodded and said, "Yes, Master."

Before the housekeeper took a few steps away, he called him back.

"Wait." He spoke in a low voice.

The housekeeper walked back to the side of the horse carriage and asked, "Do you have other orders, Master?"

Huang Fu stretched out his neck from the small window, lowered his head and whispered: "Remember to make a big fanfare when you send the money to the Left Prime Minister Yang’s residence. It would be great if the entire imperial capital city knew about it. Also, do it secretly when you send the rest of the money to the hidden village."

As a person who has worked for Huang Fu for decades, the housekeeper instantly understood what he wanted to do. The housekeeper nodded, saluted at Huang Fu, and said, "This servant understands."

Looking at the housekeeper, Huang Fu nodded with satisfaction. "Go."

"Yes, Master." The housekeeper said, and then hurried to arrange the task.

Huang Fu put down the window curtain, knocked lightly on the door of the horse carriage, and said, "Go back to the residence."

The coachman then replied: "Yes, Master."

Half an hour later, when the soldiers delivered the tax money to the Left Prime Minister’s residence, the soldiers purposely made a commotion in the desolate streets. Whenever the soldiers passed by, they would beat the gong and shout loudly. Countless citizens peeked out of their houses furtively as soldiers walked through the streets.

"Did I hear them right? The soldiers said that they would take the tax money to the Left Prime Minister’s residence? So... The one behind the tax collection last night is Left Prime Minister Yang?!" A middle-aged man asked in disbelief, while hiding behind a slightly opened door.

A young man poked his head out from behind the middle-aged man and asked, "Father, do you believe it? Isn’t Left Prime Minister Yang a wise minister who loves the common people deeply?"

The middle-aged man glanced at his son and quietly closed the door. After a moment of silence, he sighed and said, "Whether we believe it or not, the truth is there in the open. I’m afraid we can’t live here anymore. It’s best to leave as soon as possible before it’s too late."

The young man was not surprised by his father’s words, but he was still a little anxious and sad. Deciding to leave the place where he was born and grew up is not an easy decision.

Seeing his son’s reluctance, the middle-aged man said, "I will go and inform your mother first."

After the middle-aged man left, the young man opened the door slightly, and saw many people peeking out from their houses. Seeing their anxious and frightened faces, the young man lowered his eyes and closed the door silently. After a moment of silence, he went in and started packing his things.

After the soldiers circled around the imperial capital city, they came to the Left Prime Minister’s residence. Standing outside the gate, the captain raised his voice and shouted towards the closed gate of the residence.

"The tax collection has been completed and the money is here. Inviting the Left Prime Minister Yang to come and take a look." The captain shouted, and glanced at the soldiers standing behind him.

The soldier nodded, then stepped forward to hold the knocker and knocked on the closed gate loudly.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

They waited for a while before the closed gate opened. A manservant came out and looked at the captain and the soldiers behind him. He saluted the captain and said politely: "The Prime Minister thanked you for your hard work. Please leave the boxes there. We will bring them by ourselves, so as not to delay your work."

The captain was not at all offended by what the servant said. He turned to look at his subordinates and said, "Return to the barrack!"

Following the order of the captain, the soldiers put down the boxes, lined up neatly, and then returned to the Defender Army’s barrack. When the soldiers were far away, the manservant turned his head and signaled the other servants to move the boxes to the residence.

Although the Left Prime Minister’s residence is located in the most noble residential district, there are still several residences there. Most of these people who can live in this area are from aristocratic families or high ranking officials. Seeing the servants moving those boxes into the Left Prime Minister’s residence, those servants who peeked hurriedly closed the gate and went back to report to their master.

Inside the Left Prime Minister’s residence, Yang Lihuo calmly looked at the boxes piled up in the open courtyard. He looked at his wife and said, "My wife, has the preparation for the journey been complete?"

Old Madam Yang nodded and said, "We are ready to go."
