Chapter 730: Chapter 650: Chene’s Cooperation
On Sunday, Professor Chene and his team from Twin Cities Spine Center in the United States arrived at Xiehe Hospital.
The visiting team included Chene himself and a total of five people, which is quite a large team for regular exchanges.
Professor Chene has a stellar reputation in the field of spinal tumors and particularly in total vertebral resections. He has amassed a wealth of experience and stands as a representative figure of the Europe and America techniques.
Chene embodies both the typical virtues and flaws of an American. He is energetic, daringly innovative, yet arrogant and selfish at his core.
Chene had made modifications to the procedure of a total vertebral resection, making his new surgical method the best in the world. Professor Hu greatly admired Chene’s surgical style, so he proposed to send someone to Twin Cities Spine Center for further studies and to learn Chene’s new technique.
However, the arrogant and selfish Chene rejected Director Hu’s proposal, saying that he must prioritize the training needs of Americans first.
But this time, Chene surprisingly arrived with a willingness to cooperate.
In the meeting room of the Xiehe Orthopedics department, Chene met Professor Hu and the doctors from Xiehe. Yang Ping, who was regarded as a part-time doctor of Xiehe, also participated in this academic exchange.
The surgery was scheduled to start at nine, but everyone met in the meeting room at seven to exchange recent academic achievements and surgical experiences.
That is to say, both teams chatted, and some doctors gave brief speeches.
"Professor Hu, I am very honored to meet you again. How are you?" Chene shook Director Hu’s hand.
Although Professor Hu didn’t like Chene as a person, it had no impact on the academic exchanges between the two teams.
Everyone sat down for salon-style exchange, followed by observation of surgical demonstrations.
"Professor Chene, we are very well, welcome to China." Director Hu reciprocated with courteous greetings.
The exchanges were conducted in English.
"I have brought good news. I have designed a set of new instruments around my new procedure. You wanted to learn the new procedure, didn’t you? This is an opportunity. We can have full cooperation. Medicine has no boundaries, and we must share new technologies."
Chene was enthusiastic. On this trip to China, he brought his new instruments, hoping to cooperate with Xiehe and conduct clinical trials in China. This could utilize the massive data in China to improve the instruments and reduce the approval time of the FDA.
"New instruments?"
Professor Hu hadn’t heard about it before.
Professor Chene beckoned, and his assistant took out a set of graphic materials from his bag. Chene handed it over to Director Hu, "Take a look. I have kept your wish to engage in further studies in mind. If we can establish cooperation this time, we can provide many opportunities for Xiehe’s staff to further their studies. I will personally teach the new procedure of total vertebral resection."
Since when has Chene become so generous?
And since when did he acquire such noble international spirit?
Director Hu, with his suspicions, went through the graphic materials carefully.
"Professor Hu, if we cooperate, our advanced technology and your abundant case resources combined can produce astonishing achievements," said Chene.
"We will be responsible for training you in the new procedure. You will use the new instruments to perform surgeries. You will be the first in Asia to use this set of instruments."
"This is an honor everyone desires," said Chene proudly.
Director Hu was a very calm and collected person. He had no interest in becoming the first in Asia to use any new technology.
Despite it being a popular way for many professors to gain fame domestically, Director Hu didn’t fancy this method. He didn’t not want to fall into the trap of gaining academic capital by becoming the first person in Asia to use a certain foreign new instrument.
Director Hu handed the materials to Yang Ping, who was sitting next to him, after reading through them.
Yang Ping accepted them and simply flipped through the pages. This set of instruments was immature, posing many safety risks. Without improvements, it wouldn’t even be granted an FDA clinical trial license in the United States.
However, this was a common tactic employed by countries in Europe and America. They would conduct clinical trials using immature medical instruments in developing countries, accumulate data, then make improvements until the instruments became mature enough for use in their own countries.
Most of them do so under the guise of imparting advanced technology, allowing everyone to believe they were doing good deeds.
"So?" asked Professor Liang, who was sitting next to Yang Ping.
Professor Liang had already retired. He attended such academic conferences only as an audience member and no longer led them.
"This set of instruments is extremely immature and poses lots of safety risks. It’s unlikely to obtain a license for clinical trials in the United States in the short term," Yang Ping shared his thoughts with Professor Liang.
Professor Liang grunted in an irritated manner.
Director Hu also heard Yang Ping’s words because they were speaking in Chinese, which Chene didn’t understand.
Hearing Yang Ping’s words, Director Hu was utterly convinced. He felt that there was something wrong with the set of instruments right from the start and that it was very immature. He was worried about making an erroneous judgment, so he asked Yang Ping to take another look.
"Chene, why doesn’t this set of instruments have FDA certification?" Director Hu returned the materials to Chene and asked in English.
Chene nonchalantly replied, "This is a new instrument and hasn’t obtained certification yet. The period for gaining approval for clinical trials in the United States is too long, hence bringing them to China makes more sense."
"I’m sorry, Chene. Just like in the United States, the approval process is also very strict in China," Director Hu coldly replied.
Chene was somewhat displeased, "Didn’t you want to learn our most advanced tumor surgery method? If we cooperate, we can provide you with many further studies opportunities. What’s more, we are embarking on a great journey. Conducting clinical trials in China can accelerate the progression of applying the instruments, allowing many patients worldwide to benefit from the new technology sooner. Professor Hu, you can also publish many papers because of this cooperation, becoming the pioneer of new technologies in China."
"Chene, your instrument has many defects and doesn’t meet the standards for clinical trials at all. You may be unfamiliar with China. We are also very strict with the management of these Class III instruments. Your instruments can’t even pass my scrutiny, let alone pass the review," said Director Hu, neither servile nor overbearing, his tone very resolute.
Don’t talk about how your new technology is not required now, even if we desperately wanted to learn your new technology, we wouldn’t exchange it for this.
Chene initially thought the cooperation could be easily agreed upon. little did he expect to be met with a cold reception.
"We can provide some funds, and won’t limit the number of papers you publish as the first author. Professor Hu, it’s in consideration of our friendship that I brought the sincerity of cooperating. Honestly, there’s a long queue waiting to cooperate with us," Chene said arrogantly.
It’s as if cooperating with you is a privilege, and you better appreciate it!
Director Hu smiled slightly, "Oh---Well, then it’s rather simple. Please disregard us and seek cooperation with those who are in line. We’re not interested in this project, and we certainly don’t want to stand in line."
"I believe you didn’t actually understand these materials. They contain the essence of all my new technologies. It isn’t an exaggeration to say that only a few can comprehend them, as most lack the knowledge and experience in this area."
Chene was resorting to rogue logic.
Both parties were ready. They would take turns to give lectures. Each person only had ten minutes, after which a bell would ring to signal the end.
Song Yun asked Director Hu if they could start?
Chene waved his hand to signal them to wait. He still wanted to have an in-depth chat with Director Hu.
