Chapter 729 - 649: Forty-two Pictures
Chapter 729: Chapter 649: Forty-two Pictures
These doctors seated in the audience are virtuosos in their fields, so Yang Ping speeds up the pace of the lecture.
There’s a large white board on the podium. Yang Ping simply tells Song Yun to turn off the projector, pulls all the curtains of the meeting room open, abandons the use of the projector, and resorts to the white board for teaching.
For every step he introduces, Yang quickly sketches on the board; his accelerated sketching pace is astounding.
The quality of the sketches further astonishes everyone. One black marker, using two ends of varying thickness, can produce extraordinarily accurate and beautiful sketches, which are much more detailed and aesthetically pleasing than those found in textbooks.
After each segment, Yang Ping erases the sketch and starts drawing a new one. Sketching seems to be effortless for him.
These illustrations demonstrate the principles of surgery, anatomical basics, and the procedures of each step.
Even the detailed placement of staples is depicted, let alone the operations of other instruments – like how to use a laser knife and bone knife to dissect the tumor from the vertebral arch root, how to cut off the vertebral arch root, and how to use specially crafted instruments to prop open the vertebral lamina.
Doctors in the audience are all taking photos of the sketches with their phones, afraid of missing out on a single one.
Professor Liang and Director Hu cannot help but pull out their phones to take pictures, but they still can’t keep up with the pace of the sketching.
Did this young man get into medical school as an art student? Was he an art student whose potential was wasted in medical school?
Impossible. How could a medical university admit an art student?
His sketching ability is second to none in the medical field; even if he hadn’t become a doctor, he could have led a decent life with his drawing skills.
Moreover, with his rapid sketching, he could make a living just by setting up a stall at the entrance of a tourist spot to showcase his human body sketching talent. His earnings would probably not be any less than a doctor’s.
As far as possible, whatever can be visualized is presented instead of verbalized gibberish. By illustrating 42 sketches and accompanying them with explanations, Yang Ping demonstrates his "leak-free resection" technique using Jing Yunsong’s case.
The illustrations demonstrate clearly how the boundary of this tumor is formed, how to identify the boundary during the surgery, how to remove the tumor together with three vertebrae in one go along with surrounding normal tissue, how to reconstruct the functions of the spine, and how to manage the aorta and inferior vena cava.
After taking photos of the final sketch, Professor Liang could not help but feel a little tense. He asked Director Hu sitting beside him:
"Guolin, you didn’t provide Jing Yunsong’s case data to Yang Ping in advance, did you?"
Director Hu shook his head: "No. I don’t know if Song Yun told him."
"Call Song Yun over and ask him!" Professor Liang urgently needed to clarify this.
Since Yang Ping had abandoned the projector, Song Yun wasn’t needed to assist anymore and had joined the crowd in taking photos.
Director Hu waved to call Song Yun over, whispered a few words in his ear, then turned to Professor Liang: "Song Yun didn’t inform him about Jing’s case either. Song Yun just picked him up from the airport and took him directly to your home. After lunch, they came here. His luggage is still in Song Yun’s car."
So, Yang Ping had seen Jing Yunsong’s case data for the first time.
Does that mean that all those forty-two sketches were improvisations, drawn on the spot?
Upon reflection, Professor Liang felt increasingly uneasy. His scalp was tingling, not just tense.
To be able to produce such high-quality sketches instantly and rapidly, one not only needs outstanding drawing skills but also exceptional anatomical knowledge, which can’t be developed overnight.
He truly is a genuinely rare genius!
"What’s wrong?" Director Hu didn’t understand why Professor Liang was asking these questions.
After the inquiries, Professor Liang appears somewhat bewildered, lost in thought, as if relying on something.
"Nothing serious, just asking casually. Tomorrow, this surgery is not only going to be a demonstration surgery but also the first one. If this surgery takes up too much time, we’ll cancel the later ones. Tomorrow, you will be the first assistant, with Song Yun as the second assistant. Carefully observe how he isolates the tumor and strive to learn the technique of leak-free resection," Professor Liang’s tone was firm and indisputable.
Director Hu vaguely understood why Professor Liang had made such a decision, so he didn’t inquire further.
When Yang Ping finished with his lecture and erased the last sketch, the whole room went quiet. There were no applause, nor discussions.
Everyone was immersed in thoughts, with some flipping through their phones to look at the pictures they had taken.
It was then that Professor Liang started clapping his hands. Only then did everyone remember to applaud, beginning with sporadic claps that gradually turned into thunderous applause.
Song Yun thought of his loss to Yang Ping in the Golden Knife Award competition, and he was convinced this was a genuine disruptive breakthrough.
"Yang Ping doesn’t spend much time at Xiehe Hospital, only two days per month. So, let’s study diligently as his techniques are very precious. The 42 sketches just now, to be honest, even if we invited the head of our medical school’s anatomical teaching and research department, he wouldn’t be able to sketch at this level. I understood the surgical method he just proposed, it is ahead of the current total vertebra resection techniques in Europe and America and Japan. It is entirely a third system independent of those two techniques, avoiding all their disadvantages, and incorporating all their advantages. If that Professor Chene wants to watch Yang’s surgery or has someone study it tomorrow, tell him---Chinese people have priority. We will first cater to our own people’s needs for advanced studies before considering foreigners. Humph!" Professor Liang snorted.
There were reasons for his displeasure towards Professor Chene. Professor Chene from Minnesota Twin Cities Spine Surgery Center in the United States, who developed a new way of removing spinal tumors – an improved version of total vertebra resection technique in Europe and America made Director Hu very interested when he visited Twin Cities Spine Surgery Center. He expressed a strong desire to send people for advanced studies.
However, Professor Chene said that due to the requirement for aseptic management in operating rooms, there are limited slots for advanced studies. They would prioritize other American doctors before considering Chinese doctors. Furthermore, he suggested that Chinese doctors should focus more on basic surgeries, rather than being overly keen on such advanced surgeries.
Latterly, Xiehe Hospital hoped to visit the stem cell project of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Whit Family Biological Laboratory through Zhang Chunquan’s mediation but was rejected due to the need for confidentiality.
These incidents, when added together, made Professor Liang very unhappy.
"Understood!" Director Hu knew about the grudge Professor Liang held.
Professors of Professor Liang’s generation have many independently innovative techniques. Xiehe’s Spine Surgery could secure a place in the world due to the efforts of professors like Liang, adding many Chinese elements to the development of global spine surgery.
Compared to Professor Liang, Director Hu felt ashamed as he hasn’t innovated anything of his own and has merely followed others. He made a silent vow to achieve great results in the future.
"We cannot be isolated; we must be open and exchange techniques with the rest of the world. The purpose of exchange is progress, to draw on the strengths of others and ultimately to develop our own things. Therefore, learning must be grounded in independence and autonomy. We mustn’t lose our capacity for independent thinking," Professor Liang advised Director Hu.
"I’ll remember that!" said Director Hu, his face burning with resolve.
