Chapter 637 - 637: Eve, the Demon General
"So where is he now?" Bridget asked.
"He should be on his way here. I can sense his presence," Drake replied.
"You can sense his presence?" Nyx asked with furrowed brows.
"Yes." Drake nodded.
I know he has that strange power that lets him control beasts, but when did it start working on humans as well? she thought, a small frown forming on her delicate face.
But she wasn't complaining. If anything, she was glad that her silly brother had been able to secure two powerful Awakened with elemental magic... at least, that was what she believed.
"How is he going to find us here?" Bridget asked as she began distributing the food rations Jack, Theo, and Nyx had brought.
"It's a long story, but let's just wait. He'll be here in a few minutes," Nyx said.
True to their words, it didn't take long before they heard a subtle knock on the secret passage leading to the underground tunnels.
"Is that him?" Nyx asked. Drake nodded without hesitation. She rushed toward the door and, after inputting the secret combination, it slowly creaked open—revealing Nox standing on the other side.
"Nyx—"
"You reckless bastard!" she shouted, diving into his arms and embracing him tightly, two lines of tears streaming down her face.
Nox felt his shirt getting wet. A slightly shocked expression appeared on his face—he couldn't believe his sister was crying.
What had happened in the past two months that his usually stoic sister had become so soft?
The two siblings stayed like that for a while, lost in their thoughts, until a voice interrupted them.
"Sorry to interrupt your little sibling bonding moment, but we've got more pressing issues to deal with."
Nox raised his head and glanced up—and the face he saw was one he never expected to see again. Or even if he did, he hadn't thought it would be here, of all places, in the Vermilion Kingdom.
"Jack!" Nox practically shouted.
"Hey, Sully." Jack smiled.
An embarrassed expression appeared on Nox's face as he remembered the name he had chosen to use back in Snowhelm.
"What are you doing here?"
"Well, it's a long story. Why don't you come over, and we'll talk?" Jack offered.
Nox nodded and stepped into the open space where the rest of the students had gathered. He spotted Bridget among them. The purple-haired beauty gave him a sweet smile.
"It's been a while, Nox. For a moment, I thought you'd abandoned the academy."
Though she was still beautiful, it was clear she wasn't as radiant as she used to be.
Nox remembered that the headmistress of the Vermilion Royal Academy was of Expert Rank as well. He had heard rumors about a mysterious woman who had blown the heads off dozens of experts during the chaos.
Quite a few faces had flashed through his mind back then—Bridget's had been one of them. Inwardly, he was relieved that she was still alive.
"I'm sorry I came late," Nox said solemnly. "But I had more pressing issues to attend to at the time, and I never imagined something of this scale would happen to the Kingdom."
"It's not your fault anyway," Bridget sighed. "Even if you had been here during the invasion, I'm not sure it would've made much difference."
"Right," Nox nodded, taking no offense. Although he hadn't been able to keep his promise to Zara due to the events in the Dragon Realm, he had managed to secure a small dragon army.
'His aura... it has changed so much' Bridget thought as she instinctively checked his level.
"L-Level 100!" she exclaimed, disbelief written clearly across her face.
In Eos, as long as one didn't block it, anyone's level could be seen floating just above their head.
Realizing this, the other students also checked—and gasps echoed throughout the room.
An Expert at just sixteen years old… it didn't make sense.
This… this was the first of its kind in all of Eos.
"You... what did you do?"
"I killed a couple of dragons. They give quite a bit of experience," Nox said nonchalantly.
Of course, no one believed him. Not that he expected them to.
Jack blinked, then laughed. "Of course you did."
"Wait, seriously?" Theo asked, narrowing his eyes.
Nox shrugged and sat on a broken pillar. He didn't elaborate, and everyone could tell he didn't want to talk about it—so they let it go.
Still, whispers filled the room as students murmured about his level.
Nox remained calm. He could feel their stares, but it wasn't the first time he'd been under such scrutiny. What was strange was being the one they all looked up to—especially after the chaos of the last few months.
"I'm guessing you're all wondering about my sudden growth," he said, breaking the silence. "It's not something I can explain easily."
"You don't have to," Bridget said seriously. "We've all got our own secrets."
The others nodded, though the curiosity in their eyes was unmistakable. Jack seemed the least bothered, his easy grin never fading. He was clearly still trying to piece together Nox's transformation—but didn't press.
"So," Nox continued, shifting the focus, "what's the situation here? What happened while I was gone?"
The atmosphere in the passage dropped considerably. Nox noticed, but he didn't care. He was determined to know everything that had transpired during his absence.
After a long silence, Bridget finally sighed and began to speak.
"It's bad. The Kingdom has fallen into disarray. The citizens are scattered, and it's all because of her."
She paused. Her purple eyes flashed with anger as she looked Nox directly in the face and continued her story.
Taking a deep breath, she said, "Two months ago, the Order of the Flaming Rose invaded the Vermilion Kingdom, led by someone they referred to as No. 2."
"However, just when the kingdom was finally gaining the upper hand against the invaders, a giant portal cracked open in the sky. At first, it was minor imps—nothing we couldn't handle—but then the sky split... and she walked out."
"Who?" Nox asked, curiosity gleaming in his eyes. He could tell this was the powerful woman who had killed countless experts.
A heavy silence fell across the chamber. It was as if no one wanted to mention her name.
After a moment, Nyx muttered, her eyes fixed on the ground,
"It was... Mistress Eve."
