Chapter 154: Chapter 154: Getting Into Character

Gu Qiao had been waiting for He Jinxia to brew her emotions, and everyone else was waiting too. The set was silent, as all eyes unanimously focused on her.

When He Jinxia opened her eyes, she instantly dazzled everyone!

What kind of expression was this?

Although she was crying just like everyone else, He Jinxia’s tears made people inexplicably want to cry along with her!

Gu Qiao’s heart thumped heavily; a flash of excitement crossed her eyes. She gestured for the lighting crew to get into position quickly, while she controlled the camera to capture the subtle expressions on He Jinxia’s face, focusing on those eyes.

In He Jinxia’s eyes, there was drama.

"Xuexue, where are you... Xuexue, you must be alright..."

He Jinxia’s tears kept flowing; she didn’t know how long she had been shouting, her voice had become hoarse, her body seemed light as if it would fall over with a touch, yet she kept searching for Xuexue persistently.

"As a daughter-in-law of the Ciming Family, how indecent it is to appear in the yard with disheveled clothes! Servants, hurry and help the Young Madam back to her room!" the aging film star Liu Fei entered the scene, portraying the Matriarch of the Ciming Family with a stern look as she spoke to Su Qingwan.

Behind her, several maids immediately ran out and dragged Su Qingwan away.

Struggling, Su Qingwan shouted with a hoarse voice, "Mother, where is my maid, she didn’t mean to speak those words, she doesn’t deserve to die! Mother, please let me see her just once!"

The Matriarch scoffed coldly, not answering her question, instead turning to look at the maids, her eyebrows raised, "Don’t dawdle. Take the Young Madam back to her room at once!"

The maids shivered, ignoring Su Qingwan’s struggles, and forcibly dragged her away.

"Cut, that’s a wrap!" Gu Qiao called out, and the crew quickly began setting up the next scene.

He Jinxia stood there dazed, tears still streaming down her face, looking very sad.

Cheng Xiaohua held a tissue in her hand and wanted to go over to wipe her face. Halfway there, she was suddenly stopped by Gu Qiao. "Hey, who, He Jinxia’s assistant!"

Cheng Xiaohua paused, turned to look at Gu Qiao, and ran over with a confused face.

Gu Qiao’s expression darkened as she instructed Cheng Xiaohua, "He Jinxia has entered her role. Don’t disturb her. We still have a big scene to shoot later. If she loses her current state, it will be even harder for her to film afterward."

Although Cheng Xiaohua didn’t quite understand that actors could "enter a role," she nodded to show she understood.

Ten minutes later, the set was ready, and the actress playing Xuexue had "corpse makeup" on, her clothing smeared with fake blood on the back, simulating a beating death.

She lay on a torn mat, her body rolled up inside it by two servants, everything was set, the clapperboard sounded, and the filming officially began!

He Jinxia had been trapped in a room, and after much effort, she broke out through a window and arrived at the large courtyard of the Ciming Family again. She was looking for Xuexue; the direction in which Xuexue had been carried away led to this large courtyard. She had to find her...

Passing maids and servants who saw Su Qingwan disheveled couldn’t help but whisper among themselves.

Sensing their evasive glances, Su Qingwan felt a foreboding sense within her heart.

She frantically stopped a maid, gripping her shoulders tightly, "Xuexue, where is Xuexue?"

The maid was frightened stiff, utterly clueless about what to say.

"Cut, cut, cut! Get another extra to say the lines!" Gu Qiao’s eyebrows raised, her face immediately turning cold.

No reshooting was necessary. All He Jinxia needed to do was to grab hold of that maid, and the camera would switch to the maid, giving her the chance to speak on camera.

It was just a brief two-second shot, but Gu Qiao switched out four extras playing maids before she was barely satisfied.

He Jinxia remained completely silent throughout the maid’s role change, a stark contrast to her usual demeanor. Nobody dared to disturb her, including Cheng Xiaohua.

The director didn’t call "cut," and filming continued.

Upon realizing that the maid didn’t know, Su Qingwan immediately let her go and turned to grab another maid passing by, rasping, "Where is Xuexue? Where is Xuexue?"

This time, Gu Qiao didn’t even bother to show the maid in the shot, as long as the lines were correct, she let it go.

After questioning several maids with no answers, Su Qingwan looked somewhat absent-minded, her eyes red and swollen, her entire figure appearing dejected, as if she had lost her soul.

Suddenly struck by a thought, she began limping desperately toward the main house. Midway, a side door opened, and two strong servants emerged carrying a worn straw mat.

Catching a glimpse by chance, Su Qingwan immediately saw a hand sticking out from the straw mat, adorned with a light green bracelet. She recognized that bracelet—it was the coming-of-age gift she had given to Xuexue a few years ago!

Su Qingwan’s step faltered, her pupils dilated, and she stumbled toward them.

"Who is in the straw mat?" she demanded, blocking the servants’ path.

The two servants kept their heads down and remained silent.

With redder eyes and a slightly trembling body, Su Qingwan asked again, her voice quivering, "Tell me, who is inside there?"

The two servants still didn’t speak.

Su Qingwan took a deep breath and in the blink of an eye, tears started to form in her eyes, trickling down her cheeks.

"Put her down," she said, her voice tinged with a sob.

The servants remained silent still.

Biting her lip, Su Qingwan simply pushed them aside, determined to see who the person wrapped in the straw mat was!

"Young Madam, you mustn’t touch, Young Madam, you mustn’t see her, it’s bad luck..." one of the servants reached out to stop her.

Su Qingwan’s voice was hoarse as she snapped fiercely, "Don’t touch me! I am your Young Madam. If you dare to touch me, I will have all of you dragged out and executed by beating!"

At these words, the servants dared not stop her any longer.

Taking the initiative, Su Qingwan grabbed the straw mat, waving the two servants away like a small, pitiful creature cornered and in despair.

The servants immediately let go of their hold.

Clinging to the worn straw mat, Su Qingwan lost her footing and fell to the ground. A bit of hair slipped out from the straw mat; she tremblingly opened it to look—Xuexue...

Xuexue was already dead.

Su Qingwan clung to Xuexue’s corpse, her eyes split with anger, biting down hard on her teeth, forcing herself not to cry, yet tears still uncontrollably streamed forth.

This tearful scene was shot twice by Gu Qiao; by the end, the other crew members could hardly bear to watch. They turned their heads away, their own eyes beginning to redden.

With a heavy "cut," He Jinxia finished her part for the day. What was expected to take two days of filming was completed in one.

Cheng Xiaohua was packing her things and sensed something off about He Jinxia’s mood as she took her away from the set.

She didn’t talk, didn’t drink water, and would only occasionally respond briefly to questions, seeming just as lost as a soulless person.
