Chapter 393: 0392 comes without return
The stars were resplendent, and the tranquil wilderness seemed to be asleep.
Ye Qiu’s gaze flickered uncertainly as flashbacks flitted through his eyes, among which the unwilling, struggling face of Adam in his dying moments made a deep impression on him.
"I actually killed him..." Ye Qiu murmured, the image of his own self in his mind, like a demon from the abyss, so powerful that even Adam had fallen by his hand.
What exactly was this black qi?
Why did it turn me into that?
The shock in Ye Qiu’s mind was no less intense than that of the people outside because using the black qi was a gamble. Under the use of his penetrative gaze, the black qi was finally activated. At the same time, it instantly eroded his mind, turning him into a cold and ruthless Ye Qiu.
The version of himself in his mind, Ye Qiu felt estranged from; he had never imagined himself to be like that.
"It’s a good thing that only Adam was in front of me at the time; if there had been others, I probably would have killed them too," Ye Qiu said with some fear. In fact, Ye Qiu had a premonition about this. Earlier, when he went to Myanmar with Li Jinglong and accidentally used the penetrative gaze, the black qi invaded his mind, frightening Li Jinglong greatly. Fortunately, he stopped using the penetrative gaze in time, which led to the subsiding of his bloodshot eyes.
Ye Qiu, with his mind eroded by the black qi, was enveloped in dark qi, looking like a demon. Such a transformation could only be described as demonization, as though he had turned dark.
"While demonization clouds the mind, it greatly boosts strength; it has its pros and cons!" Ye Qiu said to himself. If he could control the black qi, that would be fine, but unfortunately, he couldn’t manipulate it as he wished. Otherwise, if he could maintain his current state of mind, that would be his real trump card.
Ye Qiu pondered for a while, realizing that the only way to control the black qi was to take it slow. Now that he had killed Adam, it was bound to alarm the forces behind the beast-man.
"I wonder how the situation is outside?" Ye Qiu didn’t know that the Condor-Gir family had put a bounty of a hundred million on him, attracting many desperados eyeing the huge sum of money, all wanting to take Ye Qiu’s head.
Ye Qiu didn’t plan to return to the city immediately. He wanted to recover his True Qi first. After all, the wilderness was suitable for cultivation, close to nature, where his heart could be calm and absorb external energies, purer and faster than in the city.
Previously, in order to dodge Adam, his True Qi had almost run out. Now was a good opportunity to regain his strength.
In Ye Qiu’s mind, once his True Qi was restored, he could leave the place. Even if the Condor-Gir family wanted to deal with him, he would have enough power to strike back. Otherwise, if he went out like this, he feared he would be seized without the chance to fight back.
Ye Qiu didn’t want to take the risk. When he did something, he had to be fully prepared, or it could easily lead to an unexpected outcome.
Ye Qiu continued to close his eyes and meditate, absorbing the spiritual essence around him, transforming it into True Qi, bit by bit regaining his strength.
The death of Adam had a wide impact. After all, his strength was comparable to that of a half-step legend, and even peak Martial Artists in the later stages of the True Qi realm would struggle to withstand five moves under Adam’s serious attack.
Two days later, Ye Qiu’s True Qi had recovered eighty percent, and he walked out of the cave.
The weather was gloomy, the outside was dark, clouds pressing down on the earth, creating an oppressive atmosphere.
In the woods, several figures swiftly flashed by. They stopped at the foot of a mountain, rested for a moment, and then continued on their way. Soon, these figures stopped at the edge of a volcanic crater.
These men were a group of International Mercenaries. Facing a hundred million bounty, they were tempted, so they arrived here as quickly as possible, hoping to be the first to find Ye Qiu and kill him, claiming the reward.
"We might not find anyone coming here."
"He naturally won’t stay in the same place, waiting for someone to find him. However, I believe that he is definitely within forty miles of this volcano," stated the leader with certainty.
"As long as we figure out which direction he went, it won’t be difficult to kill him." The group of mercenaries was confident. The temptation of a hundred million was strong, and even if Ye Qiu had killed a top beast-man, it did little to extinguish some people’s desire to kill him.
There were indeed many people wanting to take Ye Qiu’s head. The Condor-Gir family, being a large family with businesses all over the world, attracted countless watchful eyes. Now, with this behemoth wanting to target one person, many wanted to curry favor or earn goodwill.
Thus, those who came after Ye Qiu were not few in number.
Ye Qiu walked through the wilderness and soon discovered that today’s forest was unusually bustling, noticing many presences weaving through the trees.
Ye Qiu was surprised. Why were there suddenly so many people? Could it be the people from the Condor-Gir family, seeking revenge?
Upon reflection, the likelihood was high. After all, Adam was an SSS-grade beast-man, with a status and position at the top amongst beast-men.
For such a figure to be killed by him, it would be strange if the forces behind him were not angered.
"It looks like I need to catch someone and ask," Ye Qiu thought of capturing someone for questioning when he saw a woman appear opposite him, running towards him in panic, crying out for help.
"Save me," the woman pleaded to Ye Qiu.
Ye Qiu saw that behind the woman was a green snake over two meters long, chasing after her, flicking its tongue.
The woman ran up to Ye Qiu, begging for help. The snake didn’t continue to attack the woman but, seeing Ye Qiu standing in front, it turned its aggression towards him. Just then, a flash of white light cut through the air and the snake’s body was severed in two.
Ye Qiu slowly retracted the sword in his hand, and the woman showed a surprised expression upon seeing this.
"Thank you for saving me," the woman said gratefully to Ye Qiu.
Ye Qiu didn’t speak, merely giving the woman a quiet glance before finally saying, "No need to thank me. What is a woman doing in a place like this?"
The woman wore a look of aggrievement and said, "I was camping out with a few friends when I went to use the toilet and encountered this venomous snake. In my panic, I ran here. Can you help me get back to my companions? I’m afraid to go back alone, afraid I’ll run into another snake."
"Oh? Where are your friends?"
"Just over there..." the woman said as she stepped closer to Ye Qiu, pointing in a direction.
Ye Qiu gazed into the distance, and at that moment, the woman suddenly thrust a dagger from her other hand, aiming straight for Ye Qiu’s heart.
"Hmph!" A cold snort sounded by the woman’s ear from Ye Qiu, as if he had anticipated her sudden display of murderous intent.
With a bend of his body, Ye Qiu caused the woman’s attack to miss. Then, in an instant, his fingers flickered, seizing the woman’s arm.
The woman showed a look of horror. "How...how did you discover it?" Her attack was not slow; she had struck suddenly while Ye Qiu was unguarded. This move had been unfailingly successful countless times before—she didn’t know how many people had fallen to her and yet, today, it was seen through by Ye Qiu.
She didn’t know where she had shown a flaw.
"In a desolate wilderness, suddenly a woman of fair appearance appears and just happens to require my help. Do you think that’s credible?"
"Please don’t underestimate my intelligence. Your acting is indeed good, even perfect. But you’re still a woman, frightened and scared of snakes, the expression you showed, I did not doubt. However, after I killed the snake, your fear dissipated too quickly. I didn’t see the relief in your eyes you should have after being freed from fear. People who are tense because of fear will subconsciously breathe a sigh of relief when it is eliminated. However, I did not see this in you at all," Ye Qiu said.
"So just based on these, you’re certain I wasn’t really asking for help?" Disbelief flickered in the woman’s eyes because Ye Qiu’s analysis was entirely accurate.
"Of course, there’s more than just that. When you ran towards me, your footsteps also revealed that you were more than just a frail woman," Ye Qiu said with a light chuckle.
"Oh? How did my footsteps give me away?" the woman still didn’t understand.
"A martial artist has skills not only in their hands but also in their legs. When you ran over, your footsteps were very regular, each step the same distance. If it were an ordinary person, being chased by danger, they’d take as large steps as possible to escape the crisis. But you didn’t do that. Your pace was consistent and showed no signs of panic. Moreover, when you step, it’s the back foot that lands first, indicating that you had plenty of surplus energy in each step and were not fully sprinting. Do you think these reasons are sufficient?" Ye Qiu said.
"Impressive, no wonder they put up a bounty of a hundred million yuan for your head. I’ve learned my lesson today," the woman realized.
"A bounty? A hundred million yuan?" Ye Qiu was momentarily stunned, then he twisted the woman’s arm forcefully and said, "What exactly is going on?"
Controlled by Ye Qiu, the woman had no choice but to confess everything truthfully.
After a while, Ye Qiu finally understood the commotion he had caused by killing Adam.
"It seems the Kendrick family can no longer endure, planning to put me to death," Ye Qiu sighed.
Looking pitifully at Ye Qiu, the woman attempted to plead for her life, "Now that you know everything, can you let me leave?"
"Don’t worry, since you’ve said it, of course I will spare you," Ye Qiu loosened the woman’s arm, signaling that she could go.
Seeing the gesture, the woman immediately ran. Yet, three meters after she took off, Ye Qiu’s Kusanagi Sword drew a streak of white light in the air, piercing instantly through the woman’s body. With difficulty, the woman turned her head, "Why...why would you still...move to kill me."
Ye Qiu slowly walked over, looking down at the dying woman and said slowly, "I did promise not to kill you, but my sword didn’t make that promise. It was the one that killed you."
"You..." The woman’s eyes widened, and the next second, her breath ceased.
The woman’s death didn’t cause the slightest ripple in Ye Qiu’s mind. Although he disliked laying hands on women, for those who appeared weak exteriorly but were exceedingly dangerous, he had considerable wariness. He believed that if he were to let her go, it wouldn’t be ten minutes before more people came to surround him. Ye Qiu did not wish to face many experts alone.
He looked toward the distant city, taking note of the Kendrick family’s bounty, "A hundred million yuan bounty, they really value Ye Qiu. Since they dare come to kill me, I will make sure they have no return."
"Kendrick family, one day I will step through your family’s gates. Then, I’ll see who can stop me," Ye Qiu swore inwardly. The Kendrick family had brought him endless trouble, and if he couldn’t escape these troubles, his head would become another’s trophy, exchanged for a bounty. If he could avoid them, when he became stronger in the future, even a venerable family like the Kendricks would not intimidate him, and he would stroll in their estate to settle today’s score.
"All you people wanting to take my head, today, you’re all staying here," Ye Qiu’s eyes shone with a thick intent to kill, the presences he felt earlier were likely here for him.
These people came for his life, and so, his counter-killing them posed no qualm; he intended to make those who harbored lethal intentions toward him have a one-way trip.
It was probably forgotten by many in the assassin circles that there was a top assassin known as King Yan. Ye Qiu’s mouth curved slightly upwards; after today, he intended to have this name resound through the assassin world again, striking fear into the hearts of certain people.
