Chapter 1688: Chapter 1686: Not Optimistic
"Peter?" Two days had almost passed, and surprisingly, not a single person from Peter Brown’s family had come by. Those who had always seemed to be on his side only went as far as making a phone call to chat for a bit, completely avoiding any mention of following him.
Seeing this, Sadie Smith looked at Peter Brown, her face full of indignation.
"What’s wrong?" Peter Brown had been deep in thought about his project and looked up at Sadie Smith.
"Peter, isn’t it infuriating? Ning and Florida, who were promoted by you, now they don’t even dare to show up at your door. Is venturing into entrepreneurship really that horrifying?"
With a laugh, Peter Brown said, "It’s normal to feel that way. Who would leave the comfort of the city to start a business in the countryside unless they were out of their mind?"
Sadie Smith curiously asked, "If you knew this was the case, why didn’t you choose to develop in the city? If you had gone to the provincial capital, perhaps a few people might have followed."
"Choices in life are very important, but having determination is even more crucial. My next step will be awesome, and why should I let some people benefit for nothing?"
"So, your goal isn’t for them to follow you?" It was as if Sadie Smith had figured out Peter Brown’s thoughts.
"Exactly. After all, I’m someone who values old connections, and they are still technically my people. I would feel guilty if I didn’t let them know about any future benefits, but I just wanted to see their choices. This is better; once my project takes off, it’ll be easier to deal with them. It was their choice. Besides, they are just people from the branch office. My development will involve high-tech projects, which they will likely find hard to keep up with."
Sadie Smith looked at Peter Brown speechlessly, "And yet, you waited here for two days!"
"I gave them the opportunity; if they couldn’t seize it, that’s on them. After today, we’ll be on different paths, with no connection to them anymore!"
"Peter, can you really make it with your high-tech project?" Sadie Smith asked, very curious.
"It’s not just about one or two products. I’m leading people towards interstellar travel."
Sadie Smith laughed and said, "Keep bragging. I don’t care; as long as I take good care of you, that’s enough."
Peter Brown, looking at Sadie Smith’s enticing demeanor, pulled her close and started to make his moves on her.
Just then, they heard the doorbell ring.
At the sound, they both paused.
Sadie Smith straightened her clothes and went to open the door.
"Ivy Cooper?" The person who came in was the last person Peter Brown expected, Ivy Cooper herself.
Looking at her, Ivy Cooper had completely recovered, dressed in a stylish jeans outfit and looking very spirited, as well as full of charm.
"Manager Brown, am I disturbing you?"
"Sister Ivy, what are you talking about? Not at all, please take a seat."
Ivy Cooper walked over and took a seat.
After sitting down, Ivy Cooper looked at Peter Brown and said, "Manager Brown, I know you’re going to start a venture in the countryside, and I was wondering if I could follow you?"
At this moment, Peter Brown truly didn’t know what to say. Ivy Cooper was unexpected, and he never imagined she would think of joining him in his entrepreneurial endeavors.
"Can you tell me why you want to go?"
Ivy Cooper glanced at Sadie Smith.
Sadie Smith said, "I’ll go make some tea."
Seeing Sadie Smith leave, Ivy Cooper said, "Manager Brown, I’ve been thinking a lot lately. Before, I was too eager and short-sighted, always believing I could get the benefits with my body, but I’ve come to realize that depending on others is unstable."
Looking at Ivy Cooper, Peter Brown said, "Have you never thought about why you failed?"
As he said this, Peter Brown fixed his gaze on Ivy Cooper.
With a wry smile, Ivy Cooper said, "I’ve carefully analyzed it recently and noticed some patterns. Every time I failed, it was when you profited. I doubt all this happened without you pulling strings behind the scenes. You probably had your methods."
Upon hearing this, Peter Brown laughed, smiling and saying, "Indeed, I did make some moves behind the scenes. I’ve seen everything about your relations with the provincial leaders and branch company heads, and I informed Henry Ford and the others in time, which was why you never succeeded."
As he spoke, any remorse in Peter Brown’s heart vanished. He wanted to say this for a long time as a cultivator must forge ahead courageously; harboring secrets was not beneficial to cultivation.
Sure enough, as Peter Brown spoke the truth, he felt the energy emanating from within him surge significantly.
Unexpectedly, Ivy Cooper also seemed relieved and said, "I’d already figured that out. It was indeed your doing behind my failures."
"Are you still considering joining me in my venture?" Peter Brown asked, amusedly looking at Ivy Cooper.
Ivy Cooper laughed and said, "Playing the role of a Farmer Temporary Worker, hoping to rise in a branch office—if I hadn’t played my cards, how could I have climbed up? Just like you, I’ve used many strategies behind the scenes. Losing means losing, winning means winning, there’s no room for sentimentality. I lost because I wasn’t as capable as you—are—I accept that!"
Peter Brown laughed and said, "I completely blocked your path to development. Had it not been for me, you probably would’ve made some progress. Don’t you resent me?"
Ivy Cooper shook her head and said, "Actually, I’ve thought it over carefully in the archives. Even if I had succeeded, the best I could hope for was to become a Deputy Secretary or something similar. As a woman with a Secretary-specialized major in an engineering-focused enterprise, my opportunities would have been limited. Even if I risked everything, in the end, I’d only end up in less important departments, with little hope for wealth."
"You’re right."
Peter Brown could agree with that.
Ivy Cooper continued, "I’ve also been thinking about the issue of choice recently. Choice is more important than effort. Entering an engineering-focused enterprise was a fundamental mistake on my part, and now I have no room for advancement there."
"Not necessarily, your tactics are still useful," he said.
With a bitter smile, Ivy Cooper said, "I guess you’re the person who knows me best in the branch office. You’ve seen right through me. I’m someone who would sacrifice their integrity for advancement, but regretfully, I’m just too weak in front of you!"
At this point, Peter Brown didn’t know what to say. As for Ivy Cooper’s allegiance, he had nothing to worry about; he had too many strategies at his disposal and didn’t fear her turning on him. It was just that her sudden arrival had caught him off guard.
