Chapter 1622: Chapter 1621: Falling into a Trap
Rylan Williams’s car had long since left, and Peter Brown looked around the underground parking lot, where there wasn’t a single person present.
Just as he was about to start the car, Peter’s expression froze, and he stopped what he was doing.
Something wasn’t right!
Peter felt that something had gone wrong somewhere.
Sitting inside the car, he meticulously recalled all the events, and then Peter’s complexion changed. He quickly got out of the car, closed the door, locked the vehicle, and then headed for the elevator.
After reaching the first floor in the elevator, Peter simply walked out from there.
Upon arriving at a hotel across the street, Peter rented a room and moved in, then sat by the window and started observing.
Time passed by slowly, and there were no changes below the window.
However, although there were no changes, Peter was still there pondering over the matter.
The day’s events seemed too casual, so casual that they felt almost fake!
This was Peter’s first thought.
As a young master from the provincial city, Rylan Williams’s subordinates could not possibly lack talented individuals, and given that, it seemed highly unlikely that he would casually call someone of a migrant worker background like himself to the provincial city to help with a five-million-dollar gambling scheme, didn’t it?
Now thinking it over meticulously, Peter felt the matter was too frivolous; five million had been treated too casually—this didn’t seem real.
Yet, if it was an unreal matter, why would Rylan Williams do it?
Considering this, Peter realized there was a plan in play.
What exactly was being planned? Bringing himself into it, they certainly wanted to test him.
These thoughts flashed by, and Peter had some enlightenment.
Slapping his thigh, Peter felt he had figured something out.
It was still the incident where Rylan Williams was spooked by "ghosts"!
Indeed, the more Peter thought about it, the more he felt it was that very incident. Rylan Williams had never let go of the haunting in the room, and the Carter Clan must have also consulted some computer experts in the city. If it was the work of a hacker, such a thing could not only be achieved by ordinary hackers but also certainly by the top ones. Moreover, since he was from the Integrated Office with access permissions, he naturally became a suspect.
Throughout this time, Rylan Williams must have suspected him as well, merely without any evidence.
Today’s setup aimed to test his own level of computer technology expertise.
Unfortunately, he lacked alertness in this area and exposed his strongest side in a trice.
Needless to say, Rylan Williams now had even more suspicion about Peter being the one who harmed him.
All Peter could do now was to give a wry smile. Even if Rylan Williams hadn’t fully concluded that Peter was the one who harmed him, at least the computer would be sent off for experts to examine.
He had underestimated the Carter Clan’s people after all.
Of course, Peter wasn’t worried about the stuff on the computer. Right after he was finished, he had habitually cleaned it up; no one would be able to find anything.
However, there was a problem: the harder it was to find an issue, the more problematic it became—and the computer at the hotel hadn’t turned up any issues either.
As Peter Brown realized that Rylan Williams must now harbor deeper suspicions about him, he understood the true purpose behind Williams giving him the car.
There was no need to say it; that car definitely had issues. Perhaps the moment he drove out, the arranged police officers would stop him, fabricate any crime to charge him with, and then proceed to interrogate him. With their means, handling him would be like playing a game.
At that moment, Peter also remembered something. Today, when Rylan Williams was using the computer, he, Peter, had not noticed Williams making a call, nor had his cell phone given any alerts. This indicated that Williams had been using another cell phone and number, which could mean he’d discovered some issues.
Thinking that Rylan Williams was, after all, someone schooled in computer technology, Peter now understood even more that the young man must have indeed noticed something amiss.
What should he do now?
Another issue came to Peter’s mind at this time.
If he drove the car out, it was certain to be checked, and his worst fear was that they might have planted drugs or something of the sort inside the car. With that, he wouldn’t die but would certainly be skinned alive.
He had made it past this obstacle, but what about the next checkpoint?
That’s when Peter began to think about another issue. No one had appeared downstairs, which was enough to show that he had likely been under surveillance the entire time. If he ran away, it would be a sign of guilt, and Williams’ people would then surely set him up and take him down.
Running was definitely not an option; it would only confirm that he was involved in the affair.
But why hadn’t they made a move yet?
This led Peter to a new thought. With their capabilities, making a move on him would be simple. However, they had not acted, which suggested they were trying to force him into making the first wrong move.
What were they afraid of?
It dawned on Peter that they were likely afraid of the methods at his disposal.
But, what means did he have?
After some thought, Peter gained a deeper understanding of Rylan Williams and their mentality. They were worried that offending a computer expert like him could lead to unforeseeable consequences.
With this analysis, Peter finally took a deep breath of relief. As long as the situation was still controllable, it was fine; the fear was that Williams might discover something beyond control.
It was necessary to let Rylan Williams know his abilities, or else Williams would gain the upper hand.
With this in mind, Peter glanced at the computer in the room before turning it on.
Thinking that changing cell phones would do the trick?
Peter simply smiled. His program wasn’t that simple. Even if they changed phones, with so many people in the Carter Clan owning cell phones, just one call between Williams and any of them would allow Peter to trace the connection through the numbers.
To get a clear picture of the Carter Clan’s situation, Peter had spared no effort in his usual observations, and now it was time to put them to use.
After initiating the program, Peter began monitoring some of the numbers he had obtained.
As time ticked away, Peter began to feel that perhaps he was being overly sensitive.
Still, Peter knew that it never hurt to be cautious, especially since the Carter Clan was no ordinary family. One could only imagine what kind of retaliation they were capable of. A single misstep could cause him to lose the life he had worked so hard to attain.
Moreover, Peter saw this place as a learning environment for himself. If something did go wrong, it would simply mean he had failed the examination—a scenario Peter didn’t want to face at any cost.
Another hour passed, and just as Peter started to doubt his own speculations, a particular phone call caught his attention.
