Chapter 1597: Chapter 1596 Challenge_1
The new leader arrived accompanied by the Group’s Human Resources Manager, and the stage was filled with rows of seated people.
Peter Brown’s gaze rested on the young man who appeared quite arrogant.
At around thirty years old, one wouldn’t consider him young, yet this guy donned a suit that didn’t look cheap, his tie neatly done up, and his glasses were gold-rimmed. His hair was styled into a slick back, exuding the aura of a successful individual.
His skin color was also good, the sort that regularly underwent beauty treatments.
After the Group’s Human Resources Manager announced the document, this person named Rylan Williams began to speak, not seeming to care about anyone in the room. He surveyed the crowd, then loudly said, "Now that I am here as the manager, everything henceforth will be up to me. I want to make it clear, if anyone does not heed my instructions, don’t blame me for being unkind. I don’t have time for any period of adjustment or the like. This is a corporation, and it must behave like one. Anyone I deem unqualified will be immediately removed. There will be no room for personal favors under my watch."
Upon Williams’s declaration, the faces of the staff seated below all changed, signaling that tough days were likely ahead.
At this moment, Peter considered that, if this guy was truly dedicated to his work, stricter management wouldn’t really be an issue. His fear was that this guy’s actions would not match his words. From his current bearing, the likelihood of the latter seemed greater.
Indeed, difficult times lay ahead!
To everyone, this chap came across as arrogant and dismissive.
While Peter was contemplating, Williams’s grave voice resonated, "Upon my arrival, I heard something about our branch practicing nepotism, with some migrant workers becoming permanent shortly after their arrival, and even being promoted to vice-director. They’ve also been treated as talent with housing benefits. I was shocked to hear this. If there truly is an issue, I won’t hesitate to thoroughly investigate."
These words immediately directed almost everyone’s gaze onto Peter Brown.
Seeing where everyone’s attention went, Williams also directed his gaze onto Peter saying, "I assume you are that migrant worker. I don’t know what kind of connections you used, but now that we are all gathered here, I would like to understand what qualities and capabilities led to you being recognized as talent in the branch."
Henry Ford could no longer sit idly by; he interjected, "Mr. Williams, that’s not the way to put it. Peter is considered a talent because he is versed in three foreign languages, which is a rare asset within our Group."
Hearing Ford’s words, everyone understood that this was the new leader trying to assert his authority, and Peter was now in the cross hairs.
Looking at Peter and then at Williams, everyone was aware that Williams, new to the position, was likely trying to establish his dominance by picking on someone, and it was uncertain if Peter could withstand this test.
Williams snorted and said, "This matter was already spreading before I arrived here, and since today marks the start of my tenure and everyone is present, I think it’s appropriate to confirm the validity and not let others think our company operates disorderly."
He totally disregarded Ford’s earlier comment.
Everyone sensed that Williams must indeed have strong backing. Today, he intended to intimidate everyone, wanting them to fear and realize that his arrival spelled trouble.
As they looked over to the Human Resources Manager who had accompanied Williams, they found, to their surprise, that the Manager’s face bore a continuous smile and no attempt to stop this confrontation was made.
Peter, sitting there, had not expected to be thrust into such a situation upon arrival. Seeing the stares from everyone and considering Williams’s meaningful demeanor, he let out a wry laugh, knowing there was no chance to keep a low profile that day.
Facing such an arrogant person, staying low-key was no longer an option!
Seeing Ford and others, Peter suddenly realized that if he didn’t assert himself strongly today, doubts would linger about whether he truly had support behind him.
Fight!
Peter had made up his mind.
Williams, sitting on the stage, relished this feeling, where he could intimidate so many with just one minor character. He felt confident in his choice; with so many witnesses, he believed that in normal thinking, Peter wouldn’t dare to oppose him.
But just as Williams was feeling smug, Peter stood up. In front of everyone, he raised his voice, "Mr. Williams, may I ask what standards I must meet to be considered qualified?"
Peter’s words immediately drew everyone’s attention. No one had expected him to actually confront Williams.
Indeed, both must have backing!
Ford’s eyes lit up, vindicating his assumption that Peter was not afraid of Williams.
The Human Resources Manager, who had been smiling all this time, was taken aback for a moment, his eyes also shining with interest.
Williams, who had just reached for his teacup, paused and turned to look at Peter.
Then, Peter spoke again, "Mr. Williams, I hear you are a graduate of an American university, so I believe your English must be strong. How about we converse in English? Moreover, I’m curious about your area of expertise. I have picked up some miscellaneous knowledge and would like you to test me, to see if I meet the standards."
A challenge!
The room was charged with excitement; no one expected Peter to actually accept the gauntlet, especially in Williams’s strongest suit.
Impressive!
Regardless of whether Peter could win, seeing his confidence, everyone was at a loss for words.
Williams’s eyes also betrayed his puzzlement as he studied Peter and then laughed heartily, "Very good, very good. Seeing you have the courage to respond, I have gained a new respect for you. Yes, I went to study in the United States, specializing in computer science. I wonder if you can handle that subject. I won’t push you too hard; just answer some of the questions I have, and I will recognize you as a talent, and further, confirm your qualification for the housing benefit!"
Computer knowledge, huh!
As everyone listened, they all stared at Williams in amazement, thinking the manager studied such respected knowledge—indeed, he was no simpleton, but possessed real skills. Peter, originating from a humble farmer background, computer literate? That was laughable!
Everyone shook their heads. Without even taking the test, it was clear that Peter was set up to be the loser.
Yet, Williams was smug, knowing even if he hadn’t excelled in his studies, he had enough to impress the folks from the county town.
