Chapter 1591: Chapter 1590: Want to Take Advantage of the Situation_1
"Peter, after you go back, don’t say anything. This time I want to see who jumps out!" After coming out, Henry Ford’s gaze towards Peter Brown became even warmer.
"Okay, I’ll listen to Edward Ford."
"Mhm, don’t mention that you speak three foreign languages either."
After the car dropped Peter off at the construction site and drove away, Peter watched the car leave and mulled over Henry Ford’s intentions.
The incident with Christian Greenhill convinced Henry Ford that he did have some backing behind him, a provincial one no less, so he used the opportunity to give him the preferential housing deal. However, it was clear that Henry Ford had not anticipated so many people questioning the whole affair.
Now that Henry Ford learned Peter could speak three foreign languages, he thought about leveraging this fact for certain purposes, but it’s unclear what exactly he intended to do.
After Peter had something to eat in a small restaurant and walked back to his place, he instantly noticed the light was still on in the office. Entering the office, he found Reid Nelson sitting inside, looking at the computer.
"Reid, are you working overtime again?"
"What overtime? You know there wasn’t much going on today. I was just waiting for you to come back. So, what did Edward Ford take you to do?"
Seeing Reid Nelson’s curiosity, Peter chuckled and said, "It was just him asking about what kind of special skills I have."
Reid Nelson smiled and said, "Initially, Edward Ford seemed to have mentioned it casually. He didn’t expect there would be so much opposition and doubt, which made it difficult for him to back down."
"Was it not always like this?" Peter asked curiously.
Shaking her head, Reid said, "You probably know the situation. Edward Ford’s patron is Mr. Taylor. As long as Mr. Taylor supported him from behind, any questions about Edward Ford’s actions wouldn’t be taken too seriously. Everyone knew Mr. Taylor would suppress them. But now, Mr. Taylor has left, right?"
Peter then understood the seriousness of the matter. It might well be a coordinated effort from above. If mishandled, not only could Henry Ford be put in a tight spot over it, but Peter himself, having been brought in by Henry Ford, could be in trouble as well.
"Do you see the problem now?" Reid Nelson asked, looking at Peter with a complex expression.
"But, didn’t Edward Ford think of this at that time?"
"I’ve been pondering that too and haven’t made sense of it yet. But I heard something—that Edward Ford is definitely going to be transferred and might even be forced into job rotation!"
"Job rotation? What’s that?"
"Job rotation means you can keep your current salary but sit aside, resting, and have nothing to do with the company’s affairs. Essentially, it’s like keeping an idle person around. Think about it. After job rotation, Edward Ford’s power will inevitably decline greatly, and he’s surely not happy about it."
So that’s how it is!
Peter was beginning to grasp Henry Ford’s thoughts. The old rascal wanted to use this situation to make a gamble.
Looking at Peter, Reid said, "Tell me honestly, how strong is your connection in the province?"
"There isn’t any connection."
Reid snorted softly, somewhat coquettishly, "You don’t even want to tell the truth to your Reid. If you didn’t have inside information, why did you know about it when no one else did? Everyone has been gossiping about it secretly. Your connection is not ordinary; it can access inside information. Think about it, what will everyone else think once this spreads?"
"How would I know what they think!" Peter said with a wry smile.
Reid laughed, "It’s on you, whether you talk or not. In any case, you have to look out for me when the time comes."
Peter laughed, "Right now, it’s you who’s taking care of me."
"Many things are uncertain. In this society, it’s all about who you know. Without connections, you might work yourself to death with no hope of advancing. With connections and just one word from those above, you can soar to heaven. Anyway, I’ve said my piece; just don’t forget your Reid when the time comes."
"If that day really comes, I certainly won’t forget."
Reid cast a flirtatious glance at Peter and giggled, "Alright then, it’s a deal."
At that moment, Reid’s expression became serious as she looked at Peter, "I’m starting to see things clearly now. I was somewhat mistaken before. Let me help you analyze what everyone else is thinking."
"That would be great; I was just thinking about asking about everyone’s thoughts."
"Christian Greenhill’s situation has caused everyone to become suspicious of you. It’s just that they can’t confirm their suspicions yet. If you really do have a strong backing from above, even the people at the head office would be cautious in dealing with you. So, having connections is a safeguard for you."
Peter had also considered this and nodded.
Reid continued, "Edward Ford realized this and wanted to use your influence to secure his position."
"He wants to use my influence?" Peter was a bit confused.
Reid explained seriously, "Edward Ford is very calculating. He knows everyone is guessing whether you have a provincial patron or not, so since he might face job rotation, he might as well use the preferential house affair to probe. After all, even if the probe proves you have no such backing, the worst-case scenario for him is just job rotation."
"So you mean he anticipated the dissenting voices?"
"Of course, he must have expected the dissenting voices. Do you think Edward Ford is simple? He’s waiting to see the reaction from the people behind you. If his gamble pays off, his situation will take a turn for the better, otherwise, there’s not much to lose."
"But today, he seemed anxious and even asked me what special skills I have?"
"You see, he was hinting at you that if you have no talents to offer, it’s not just him who will be unlucky, but you too. It’s a message for you to quickly inform your patrons, to intervene when necessary."
"I see!"
Peter realized his thoughts on the matter had been somewhat off, with Henry Ford harboring such plan to use this opportunity. Just one call from the higher-ups could steer the situation in the direction he hoped for.
Reid, who knew Henry Ford’s character well, offered an analysis that made sense.
After carefully considering for a while, Peter also felt that Henry Ford was acting on a desperate hope that the significant preferential treatment would tempt him. If Peter sought out his connections to secure the villa offer, Henry Ford would lose face at worst. For Peter, it would be a total loss, but it would not cause any real damage to Henry Ford.
