Chapter 71: The Second Day

Having seen the little girl, Xiao Ming, get such a great result, Han Yu was now quite excited.

She was one of the youngest recruits to have been brought in, just ten years of age. And yet she had managed to reach the Eighth Stage of the Body Tempering realm, which was quite great even when compared to all the sects in the entire world. As such, Xiao Ming’s talent was already expected to be decent, but now that it had been confirmed to be green, it was astonishing to everyone.

It made Han Yu wonder what his talent would really be. Even if he was rather braggadocious, he knew his chances of getting something like the Violet rank were about as likely as him being the son of a divine emperor.

’I should at least get Blue talent, right?’ Han Yu tried to be ’realistic.’

For him, his lack of progression wasn’t due to a lack of talent, but a lack of resources.

At least that’s what he thought.

He continued watching as more and more recruits got their talent checked. There were nearly four hundred recruits in total, which was going to take a decent amount of time. At the fastest, it took at least thirty seconds for each recruit to be tested.

Which meant for all the disciples to be tested, it would take over twelve hours total.

"How long will they continue this?" Han Yu asked Xu Qing. "It’s already evening," he said, looking at the sky.

Only a faint line of red could be seen in the distance, with most of the sky having turned dark.

"Probably a couple more hours, then they’ll pause it," Xu Qing replied. "They’ll resume tomorrow," she added.

"Makes sense. I’m getting sleepy too," Han Yu said.

It was one thing for the disciples to stay awake for an entire day, and another thing for children who weren’t even Qi Refining realm cultivators to do the same. Not to mention, they were also tired from the combat assessment, and many were already yawning.

Some of the disciples who had already been tested were already sitting on the ground, close to passing out. Xiao Ming had also fallen asleep, curled up with the pouch containing her rewards clutched tightly in her hands, like a squirrel hoarding spiritual nuts.

Time passed, and two hours later, the appraisal process was brought to a halt.

"We will be continuing tomorrow early in the morning. All recruits can go and rest in the quarters provided. Those who have already passed will also go to rest, but will be initiated into the sect officially tomorrow with everyone," Elder Nie Jing announced.

"Finally, I felt like my eyelids would fall off," one of the children spoke.

"Yeah, I can’t stay up any longer."

"I’m hungry."

"Me too."

With that said, the children were soon guided to the lodgings by the disciples, Han Yu among them.

They were all kept in three large buildings that were located a short distance from the grounds. There were multiple rooms in every building, with each room holding at least five children. They were given dinner first—a surprisingly warm meal that made some of the kids cry tears of joy—and were quickly sent off to sleep.

For most of the children, the beds provided were much better than the ones at home, which made them fall asleep almost instantly. Han Yu included, who passed out the moment his head hit the pillow, his snores forming the rhythm of dreams.

Xu Qing also left, going to rest herself. After all, she was quite tired from the day’s travel and could finally enjoy the supreme luxury of her own bed.

The night passed quickly, as the children all got some good sleep. And the next day, everyone was gathered back on the grounds.

Only a hundred recruits had managed to get their appraisal done, with seventy-five percent of the recruits still waiting. That meant 300 anxious hearts beating like war drums.

"We shall begin the appraisal process again!" Elder Nie Jing announced.

The nervousness of the children had waned a bit, replaced by a collective desire to just get it over with. Some had even started practicing their "surprised but humble" reactions in case they got a high ranking.

"Ouyang Lantao, approach!" Elder Nie Jing resumed reading from the jade slip and called the first recruit of the day over.

The boy walked onto the dais, puffed his chest, and pricked his finger with all the drama of a tragic hero.

SHUA!

The result soon appeared and a red light glowed on the tablet.

SHUA!

The result changed, and an orange light appeared on the tablet.

"YES!" Ouyang Lantao fist-pumped. "Secure future, here I come!"

But just as he was about to walk over, the tablet glowed again.

SHUA!

"Yellow! It’s yellow!" the disciples exclaimed.

"It’s here! He’s the second-highest ranked recruit!" The people were getting excited.

Ouyang Lantao froze, unsure if he should bow, cry, or start composing a haiku about his journey.

Even after fifteen seconds, there was no change.

"Yellow talent. You pass," Elder Nie Jing said with a nod of approval.

The boy walked off the dais, dazed and elated, collecting his rewards with the care of someone handling priceless heirlooms.

The next few recruits were mundane—orange or just red. A few looked ready to protest their fates, but the glowing rock didn’t take bribes.

Ten more recruits passed before the second yellow-rank talent appeared.

And the one after that was also yellow, making the elder feel genuinely pleased.

’This recruitment is going better than I thought,’ he mused. Normally, finding even a single yellow-ranked recruit was cause for celebration. Now he might actually throw a party.

A hundred children went by, and half the recruits had finished their assessments.

From this, six had yellow-ranked talent, one green, and about thirty red talents, with the rest being orange. It was a rainbow of mediocrity, spiced with a few sparkles.

Two more hours went by as the number of recruits steadily decreased.

And finally, another shocking talent was discovered.

SHUA!
